I agree that history should not be erased, RYME. We gain nothing by doing that. But do all important figures in history deserve the honor of being made into a statue? Hitler was an effective, persuasive, and powerful leader in Germany but you will not find statues of Hitler in that country. The statues that have been recently torn down would be better placed in a museum, and along with them, a plaque that describes clearly and historically what that person did. In the case of confederate generals and the like, what they did was to lead as a part of a treasonous act in an attempt to overthrow the U.S. government and continue the practice of slavery. So, yes, those figures should be known and recognized for what they did, not glorified as heroes.

Instead of glorifying these figures, maybe we should erect statues of true heroes like William Harvey Carney, the black American soldier from during the Civil War who was award the Medal of Honor, or Isaac Hopper, a white Quaker who helped establish the Underground Railroad to free black slaves.
So no, let's not erase history. Let's learn and teach it as it really is.
