Those lyrics, man. It's a pandemic anthem written before there was a pandemic.

everybody wants the most they can possibly get
for the least they could possibly do

The lyrics to "Alright" also foreshadow the pandemic.  Maybe Jeff knew something...

"It's alright, to shut it down
Disappear in thin air, it's your home
    It's alright, to be alone
To listen for a heartbeat, it's your own"

This has the potential live for an extended jam or long Mike solo at the end

They don't really jam anymore on new stuff.  They have enough songs to get to in concert

So thankful for all of the amazing great new tracks, noise cancelling headphones and working from home with nobody to interrupt me from listening to this on repeat.

Bonus points for the all three singles being great enough to add to my run playlist.

  • Great fuckin song. Definitely some Zeppelin undertones. More like Robert Plant solo stuff rhythmically/lyrically.  A little Bonham type power in the drums. QOTSA vibes as well. Really digging it. Might as well listen 16 more times tonight. Can't wait til the album arrives.

Its soooooo good. I love how the end erupts into controlled chaos. And that bass line..... damn.

I'm gonna drop a full album review on my YT channel on Friday if anyone is interested. Just putting it out there....

I hear Pink Floyd's 'Welcome to the machine" in the intro, and Rage Against the Machine's intro to "Testify" in the outro.
Up here so high I start to shake, Up here so high the sky I scrape, I've no fear but for falling down, So look out below I am falling now, Falling down,...not staying down, Could’ve held me up, rather tear me down, Drown in the river

How in the sam-hill was not the lead single? I know they have a history of choosing the likes of Who You Are and Nothing As It Seems over more "single-like" songs like Hail Hail and Grievance. But come on, this would've been such a great "Pearl Jam is BACK" single for the masses. No reason not to like it, no need to try and figure it out or let it grow on you, just a great tune everybody can enjoy.
I hear you but I actually think DoTC was the perfect first single.  The band has already mentioned that it was the most collaborative song on the album and it's experimental, something they've been pushing since No Code.

Agree! I think DoTC was the right single for today's music climate compared to the past experimental singles for their day.

Did the liner notes correct this?

    Wikipedia is never wrong.  :)

Josh Evans too, Maybe Jeff had different lyrics originally?

    “Alright”
Jeff wrote it, and brought in a version with him singing. He showed it to the band and they thought it was amazing. His demo, which he started at home in Montana, had that Kalimba loop that goes throughout the song, plus some of the piano chords and acoustic guitars. I think some of the bass and piano are what’s in the track now

Quick Eacape is a modern classic rock song in the best way possible. Music and lyrics just mesh so well. Absolutely going to be the live highlight of the album.

    From Richard Stuverud -

    Another pretty rad tune here!
A cool backstory on this one is that I had the opportunity to track a demo version with JA. from many of our sporadic demoing sessions over these past years.
When Jeff and I record, it's either for his solo stuff, my solo stuff or for something he can bring into PJ.
Always a nice surprise to hear the final product version.
Matt's drumming is amazing as always.
This one sounds good loud in the headphones!

It's such a cool song - really deserves an end solo that doesn't sound like a first take improv. The music beneath that solo is so interesting that anything you put on top of it really has to bring something melodically to the table. I'm finding McCready's thoughtless, speedy, noodling unbearable on this track especially. Such a missed opportunity.

It’s kind of his style. He isn’t Trey Anastasio.
