Air Canada just laid off 20,000 workers. That is over half of its workforce.

I was just reading about Delta Airlines having to let go of 7,000 pilots.  That blows my mind.  The airlines are taking a massive hit.

I've said a number of times that there is too much air traffic, making it environmentally unsound.  But I also come from an airline family- my father was an aeronautical engineer and one of my uncles flew commercial jets of all sizes, so I know how hard this hit is.  I feel badly for the families affected by this, but glad for the environment.  This is yet another indicator of how badly we need to readjust our way of living.  Environmental issues,  and epidemics and pandemics will force our hand on this.

So we just got a robocall from the town informing us to expect more than 1,000 protestors here tomorrow for a far-right/white supremacist rally.

Apparently, this is spearheaded by the same group that has been protesting the governor’s stay-at-home orders every Thursday for a month or so.

So I guess they’re not just good people who are out of work airing a grievance but actual fucking evil incarnate spreading their hateful gospel.

This sucks for so many reasons.

Yes, but most of the protestors appear to be from New Hampshire.

Here's my solution:  Allow these fools to assemble and once they have done so, surround the perimeter with an extra city block or two at the margins with cops or National Guard and let no one else in or out.  Then send in phony news crews with cameras and mics that are not really hooked up.  Have the news people appear to be neutral or sympathetic and have them ask protesters to voice their opinions. Once the protest begins to disperse, pull out the cops or National Guard out and send the phony reporters back to phony news trucks and everyone goes home.

What you end up with is a bunch of idiots griping to themselves.  They never make the 6 o'clock news.  They are denied the negative attention they seek, but think they have made some big damn deal.   End of story.

The Norwegian Director of Infection Protection directly criticizes the (swedish) state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell, and especially his predecessor Johan Giesecke.

Frode Forland says that they are claiming things to strongly - and that there has been no critical debate in Sweden about the chosen strategy.
    - It feels like you want to support your own government and strategy. But Sweden goes against the whole world, he tells Svenska Dagbladet.

    "Giesecke should be more humble"
Frode Forland says that Tegnell's predecessor Giesecke expresses himself too certainly about Sweden's - and especially other countries' strategies.
    - He should be more humble. There is a lot that we do not know about this virus.
When Svenska Dagbladet reaches Johan Giesecke he says that he regrets if he has sounded arrogant, but that he does not in any way pulls back from his statements that he believes that Sweden has the best strategy.

Agree with Sweden about the schools
Frode Forland has previously given Sweden the right when it comes to keeping schools open, and has presented a study that the closure of Norwegian primary schools is believed to have had little effect on the spread of infection.

However, he has been critical of large parts of Sweden's strategy.
    - We have also seen that this gradual shutdown in Sweden has had its high price in the number of dead. If you compare with Norwegian, Finnish and Danish numbers, he has said before.

I just found out that a family of 5 we are good friends with took an antibody test. They all tested positive to have carried the virus, but none of them ever had symptoms. I’m getting the facts regarding the test in terms of accuracy, etc., but assuming it is correct, that is great news for them. I’m intrigued and may get tested as well once I gather more facts.

Fox News is telling its employees to work from home for at least another month while its TV hosts push for businesses to reopen

In a memo to employees Friday, the Fox Corporation announced workers will be told to telework for at least another month, CNN reported.

According to CNN's Brian Stelter, the memo sent Friday tells Fox Corp. employees — which include employees of Fox News — that they will not begin a gradual return to the company's offices until June 15 at the earliest. The date could be pushed back even further, according to CNN.

"We were originally told of a potential return to the office in mid-May back in late March, so I wouldn't be surprised if we don't make [the June 15 date] and we push it to late summer," a Fox source told CNN.

The memo, sent by Fox Corp. Chief Operating Officer John Nallen, says that the company's properties would reopen in "phases," sources told CNN.

Fox News has largely been operating under phase one of the multi-part plan, allowing essential network personnel and some anchors to work from offices to keep the network on-air during the pandemic. It's what other networks have been doing, too, CNN noted.

The memo comes as the network's on-air personalities have for weeks been echoing President Donald's calls to reopen shuttered portions of the country, from schools to businesses. Coronavirus cases continue to rise, and models predict even more cases as states reopen early.

As Business Insider reported on April 3 — over a month ago — Fox News anchors had already been calling on the president to end lockdown efforts meant to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Fox News host Tucker Carlson claimed the government had "outsourced the decision to public health officials" and that "the public health establishment failed us badly" in recommending stay-at-home and similar orders.

On April 23, Laura Ingraham, host of "The Ingraham Angle" made a similar case that targeted Dr. Anthony Fauci, nation's leading health expert.

"If we wait for Dr. Fauci's seal of approval to reopen America, we may not have an America to reopen," she said on her Fox News show.

And on May 11, as Mediaite noted, "Fox & Friends" anchor Brian Kilmeade pushed for the economy to reopen, even as some of his colleagues urged for a more cautious approach.

"I feel so bad for these people who want to see a light at the end of the tunnel," Kilmeade said of people in states like Illinois and Pennsylvania who own gyms or dealerships but can't reopen because state orders required they remain close.

"I understand what all of the hosts are saying — businesses are failing, people are suffering, and most people want a way out of this ASAP," Stelter, a media analyst for CNN, wrote in his Reliable Sources newsletter Tuesday. "Different approaches are probably appropriate in different places. But it's strange to see Fox stars hosting from home, albeit in hard-hit areas like New York, telling viewers that it's time to get back out."

Polling data has suggested the majority of Americans support the continuation of stay-at-home orders, despite several states relaxing them at the beginning of May and protests in various states across the country against the leaders who enacted them

The BCCDC is running a population survey looking at lots of different aspects of covid that is open to all BC residents. It has questions on demographics, symptom history, travel history, behavioural changes related to the pandemic and opinions on the various public health measures. At the end there is an option to opt in for antibody testing during the next phase of research, so I agreed. I don’t think I would bother to get tested just for my own info but will do so for epidemiological purposes if offered the chance.

The last time I checked, more than 80,000 had completed the survey.

This is true. Whether right or wrong, if I found out that I had it at some point and was asymptomatic, it would give me some level of comfort to know that my body had fought it off previously. I’m going to gather more facts on this test and decide from there.

Yeah I can see feeling better knowing that it didn't get you badly the first time.
As shared, I suspect I had it.
Not getting tested now until I get more info about what it means to have had it but obviously hoping it means immunity and can breathe easier and go and give plasma.

In BC it looks like public schools will resume some in classroom instruction on June 1. For elementary grades, kids will be attending 2 or 3 days per week, which I assume means that the classes will be split in half and alternating, to allow for distancing. High school kids will only attend once per week. All of this is optional and kids can finish out the school year without attending anything else in person.
