    UPS driver in Eugene, OR.

So i've worked in retail half my life. It's ok. The job I have now I kinda like. The hours are good but it's retail so the money kinda sucks and I've been thinking of switching careers/jobs for awhile now. Also I def. need more money (credit debt and my car has been giving me problems.

So I was thinking about maybe becoming a UPS driver.  They pay pretty well from what i've heard and all. Did have an interview the other day which went ok. They asked me to come back for a driving test and get a physical. Never driven a UPS truck or any truck for that matter so kinda worried about that. More worried about the driving part than anything.  I told them i'd come in next Friday to take the driving test. Any pointers? Do you like it?

I spent about 15 years driving these types of trucks (step vans/UPS truck/bread truck/whatever you call it). I was in the uniform delivery business (Aramark/Cintas) and had the same concerns when I was hired in at 22. The biggest pointers I can give are:

Mirrors!!!! Mirrors, mirrors and more mirrors. Learn to use your mirrors when you're driving. Makes navigating and backing up SOOO much easier. Even if you think you're good at it, go to an empty parking lot and spent 20 minutes trying to hit different marks with your vehicle. Use a different vehicle or two to gain better precision.

These trucks typically turn really well, but you cannot take the turns like you are in a car. You'll want to slightly overshoot where you would normally start making your turn if you were in a car. You will think you should start making the turn as you always do, but wait a slight bit longer to start making it than you think you should. It will feel foreign at first.

For the driving test, be sure to use the turn signals, seat belt, obey speed limits, double check your surroundings.

It seems intimidating, but they are really driver friendly. It sounds like this may be a great opportunity for you and quite a change. Let us know how it goes and let me know if you have any further or more specific questions about driving these trucks.

I did look online for some pointers and came across this one video which seemed to help. I think it was called UPS driving school or something like that.
