Trent gave away an entire album for free, a true artist
The Slip! Was Ghosts free too? He's done samplers for the OST's, he did the Year Zero stems, quite a bit.

yep, ghosts was released 4 months before the slip and both were released on nin.com under the creative commons license so anyone could download them, make remixes/etc or create their own songs, and year zero wasn't free but trent adamantly encouraged fans to steal it and eventually released all of those tracks online under the creative commons license when the year zero remix album came out

Someone who works at the studio it was recorded at? Someone at the label? Who knows I don't understand it either, it feels like a violation of the band.
sometimes band members themselves do it, in cases where there was a dispute about their contract, and the record company refuses to release music the band wants to, so they do it themselves as a fuck you to their record company.
Lots of speculation that Trent Reznor did that many years ago...
What did he leak?
He leaked Year Zero before it dropped. 2006 and 2013 it is believe that he leaked the Broken video, he leaked about 400gbs of HD videos footage from three diffrent lights in the sky tour, and if you look up NIN Seeds he is assumed to have uploaded a few different playlists to a torrent site. I'm sure there's more that I'm not thinking of.
That ‘Broken’ video is pretty messed up.

Is this your last newsletter in the club?
Sadly, yes. I'm not renewing after my membership expires later this month. This particular issue, while I've had fun jabbing about it, is really just a small part of how I feel about everything now. I'll continue to buy new albums if/when they put them out, and might try to catch a show, if they ever play a non-stadium show near me, but other than picking up a few vaults in vinyl, the fan club membership hasn't really done anything for me for at least a decade. It's been a swell 24 years though! 😊

How does that make him a true artist?
just my opinion, he gave something that he created away for free, jeff and ed have stated in the past how can art be judged? as far as winning awards, etc... so i believe true artists don't care about money and selling records, because the art is what matters

By that criteria, most true artists must be dead from exposure to the elements or starvation

I don't think an artist can be judged any criteria, really, but their own.

I am a sensitive artist.
Sensitive to what?

That worked out well, since "Old Town Road" sampled a "Ghosts" track and Trent will get royalties off that megahit until kingdom come.
NIN also dropped "Ghosts V-VI" for free a couple of weeks ago, in case anyone missed it.
