It's not just fake accounts, it's fake accounts with blue checkmarks. The checkmark used to mean you are a verified account. Now, because of Musk's new policy, anyone can get it simply by paying 8 bucks.

There's always been bots and fake accounts, but the blue check mark next to the name meant you could trust that the account was who it claimed to be. Twitter had a verification process to determine the authenticity... when Trump or Biden for example would tweet, the check confirmed it was coming from Trump or Biden's official account. Bots, or impersonators couldn't get those blue check marks..

Selling blue checks to anyone willing to pay $8 a month throws that out the window. In the above case w/ the Eli Lilly tweet, someone paid for that blue check and created an imposter account for the purpose of that prank. Before Elon, the person behind that account wouldn't have been able to get the blue check.

This could be funny in a case where a person gets a blue check, impersonates someone like Adam Schefter and makes up off the wall NFL trades or stories, but could also have a negative effect if people take the tweets from the fake accounts at face value. 

As I understand it, they added a feature where you can see if the blue check was paid for, or issued in a case of authenticity (like in the case of a government entity), but you still don't know until you click the check. It's another step that didn't exist before Elon. 

I saw something this morning where they may have suspended the program to buy blue checks in the aftermath of this Eli Lilly prank.

It appears to be complete chaos at twitter hq based on some reports.

No, as of last night, it could mean either; you could click on the check mark to see if it was purchased or issued based on authenticity.

Part of me wonders if he is purposely destroying the company.  Nobody likes the twitter mob and a great way to get rid of it would be to buy the company, pretend you are trying to make it better while destroying it, and then write it off as a business loss so you can continue not paying taxes.
