This thread is a nice microcosm of the general population, although certainly more left leaning.  Some of these AOC proposals are very polarizing and even those of us that are inclined to support Democrats and take very progressive positions, are not supportive of her short legislative track record.  And what she is proposing is emblematic of hard left.  Without bringing the current Trump thread nonsense over here, some of these proposals pose far more risk to Democratic presidential chances in 2020 than anything that does or does not come out of the Mueller report.
The trick for dem candidates will be whether they can explain a green new deal in layman’s terms that doesn’t sound like tax and spend and a jobs killer. Team Trump Treason is already hiring scientists to back his claim of climate change is a Chinese hoax and the dems just want to control you narrative. Polling suggests it’s a viable issue to run on but you have to be able to explain it so people get it. Imagine if WV built, installed and exported wind turbines instead of “dug” coal.

This is an interesting point because how is it not a tax and spend initiative. That’s exactly what it is. Government taking over and determining the actions.

I think that’s likely needed in some, maybe many areas. But how do you sell it as anything else? Or are you just referring to who the taxes will hit? Selling it as a tax on others?

I haven't seen a CBO estimate on it.  Does it exist?  Until then, it's just pie in the sky.
Did you read how much climate change has cost the economy already and the estimates of what it's gonna cost in the future?

Pie in the sky is continuing on as per usual and thinking that an economy can handle those costs.

It’s a shifting of energy priorities. Fracking and oil exploration and coal mining are subsidized. Switch the ratios over time to allow for a transition to cleaner fuel alternative. You’ll never eliminate the need for oil like some wish. Personally, I think it’s too late.

Oil companies are too big to fail.  The amount of people that they employ and the money that they make for their stock holders is not something that people are just willing to give up that easily.

We do need people like Musk to make other forms of energy readily available.

I don't think argument to transform to a renewable economy is controversial at all.  Remember that this is written as two completely different (IMO) strategies, into one.  The New Deal was a very specific set of radical social programs.  Going green is something different.  They don't have to be fused and I would argue fusing them together is bad electoral strategy.

I’m not sure if it’s a good or bad strategy at this point. But I know I don’t like it.

I don’t think anyone wants oil companies to “fail.” I just don’t understand why an Exxon/Mobil wouldn’t diversify into clean energy. Again, not over night but over time. There is active research on alternative energy but it’s still a ways off or out. Like I said, I think it’s alread too late.

I think the fusing of “green” and “new deal” makes sense in that the green is trying to save the planet and the new deal is the job creation and spin off. Are some ideas in there radical, like no air travel in 10 years, sure. But the basic premise, if articulated and thought out, over time, makes sense. Otherwise, what’s the alternative?

The trick for dem candidates will be whether they can explain a green new deal in layman’s terms that doesn’t sound like tax and spend and a jobs killer. Team Trump Treason is already hiring scientists to back his claim of climate change is a Chinese hoax and the dems just want to control you narrative. Polling suggests it’s a viable issue to run on but you have to be able to explain it so people get it. Imagine if WV built, installed and exported wind turbines instead of “dug” coal.
That air travel is for intercontinental.  You can't build a train to Europe.

I love the idea of trains everywhere but that is going to be very expensive.

I do like the idea of all buildings being modern and energy efficient.  The govt already requires that all new "govt used builidings" be LEED silver at minimum.

Making a state of the art building shouldn't be a bad thing.  Only problem is in a city like NY some of the technology becomes out dated or not in budget when a project comes together.  Example.  My company helped build the 2nd ave extension.  All the light bulbs are FLORESCENT!!!  The MTA will spend more money changing light bulbs in the future then it would have to put in LED's up front...

My point is that there's a difference between a vision and legislation.  This seems to try to be both.  I'm okay with the vision, but the legislation to support many of those things are far down the road.
Second, the concepts of living wage, universal healthcare, etc. should not be connected legislatively with climate policy.  I don't agree with it from a principled standpoint or from a political strategy.  It's too easy to run against something that is essentially a progressive wet dream.

You are correct.  I did make mention of that.

The MTA asked for a change order on the lighting but thought that it was too expensive to do.  It is going to cost them $1000 to change a lightbulb in these new stations...

I'm thinking if they made a free colouring book with a three pack of crayons... she'd garner a lot of votes. While colouring, morons could sit on their porch drinking iced tea, proud of their work staying between the lines, and proclaim, "This is making America great again."

America isn't ready for socialism of any kind. Many still think they are an invention or a lottery ticket win from living the American Dream. Corporations have stolen a page from religion's playbook and have people eager to wait in line for the promise or hope of something grand.

I don;t understand the fear either.  There are enough things of substance to discuss and disagree about.

But a fuckin comic book?  Really?  If that was a Trump comic book you'd have already lost your shit and come up with another nickname.

I could give a rats ass that someone made her into a super hero comic book and yes, I’d love a Tesm Trump Treason comic book to ridicule. If only the repubs were so creative but you know, less art, more god.

Just wow.  I can't understand why some feel the need to make a politician a rockstar.  I mean you end up with a "me first" person....like the president.  People continue to double down on being dumb.
I can’t understand the fear she strikes in the hearts of repubs, being 1/435 of a body and a freshman one at that. Shiver me timbers.

I don;t understand the fear either.  There is enough things of substance to discuss and disagree about.

The scardy cat repubs would be wiser to ignore her but you know, BOO, boogeywomen and all.

Ocasio is a page out of the Trump playbook.

She isn't your typical politician and she attacks the status quo.

That is why I liked Trump and why I like Ocasio.

What I don't like about either of them is their crazy ideas.

On the scale of "crazy ideas", I'd far rather have hers than his. Other places that share some of her crazy ideas, like northern Europe, tends to be pretty nice places to live. Other places that share Trump's crazy ideas tends to be dictatorships.

They strike me as the same person, on polar opposites of the spectrum.  I think people will recoil from her ideas as people recoil from Trump's personality.

Polar opposites as in Trump is a total lie and she is totally authentic?

She is like Trump in a couple of ways.  She overuses twitter, and if she feels a tweet is attacking her she is quick to respond, just like Trump.  Politicians need thick skin and should not be debating on Twitter...
