Spoonfed bullshit is what we call the news now. Don't shoot the messenger. Unless of course the whole world discussing a has-been rapper being in the oval office passes as real news.
Its 95% superficial garbage and celebrity worship. And we wonder why Donald Trump is president lol.
Do you ever try consuming news that isn't CNN or whatever? You act like that's the only news available, and that it's ALL inaccurate or irrelevant. Obviously that is not true. And like everyone who ever does consume that is a drooling moron who is incapable of media literacy. Except for yourself.
I asked to not shoot the messenger. I've said before most people view the news for entertainment and my team vs your team. I do not think people are drooling morons, I just think they are human
Also, considering the majority of my country gets its news from the few major outlets and channels, doesnt matter much where I get my news. But, I used to flip between them all... cnn, MSNBC, fox for fun... BBC is ok but I prefer PBS Newshour, still try to watch that when I can... listen to NPR in the car... print i tend to prefer the post & times... big fan of harpers magazine who I think brings the real stories in depth (they are legit)... love Zinn and his style (RIP)... also a fan of Chomsky but definitely preferred Zinn... used to watch Bill Maher but he is far too one-sided, but I think that's still a good political discussion show... I've also been known to enjoy MTP on Sunday mornings when I can
Call me when the corporate main stream media on either side wants to talk about real issues in depth. Until then, I'm not interested in porn stars attorneys and partisan talking heads on the payroll
Are you suggesting that they aren't talking or addressing those issues already? It seems to me they are doing both just fine.
I would say they are doing a better job of entertaining than informing. Their goal is ratings and ad revenue, just like every other TV show
I guess I have never kept track on the percentage of our "news" that is entertainment as opposed to deep content so I can't factually argue one way or another on the current trends, but I do think the entertainment news has been elevated to a more substantial part of the common person's news feed because of technology. The whole "trending" news articles drives what gets views and rises to the top for a brief period, but it's not like it is the only content or what is being pushed. I think entertainment news has managed to infiltrate more media outlets than in the past because they know there is a demand for it and since they already provide content, why not expand it while still maintaining the critical issue pieces they were already focusing on.
If all I wanted was trash news, I can find that, but I don't so I focus on the real world shit that matters. I may occasionally enjoy to read some mindless drivel that means little, but I think we all need a bit of that in order to maintain our sanity.

Well like I said before, this whole forum is pretty based on what we see in the news, so I'm not sure why your main theme is, apparently, trying to convince everyone to stop that. You're fighting a losing battle, lol. Also, you're really not saying anything that all of us aren't cognizant of, and deal with in our own ways. You're just finding new ways to express that you can't personally handle consuming the news these days. Or that's what it seems like anyway.

They all exist simply for one reason, ad revenue generated by ratings. Their goal is to entertain, not inform. They have all become celebrity driven outrage factory's that spend 30 seconds on a story, usually a bullshit story.

I call it how I see it, dont hate me.
Lol, I don't hate you. I am also simply calling it how I see it.
The thing is, even if that is their ONLY motivation, which I don't believe at all - those people are real reporters you know - but agree revenue is one of their main motivations, that doesn't at all mean that the vast majority of the factual news they report isn't accurate or that they are reporting fake news. Those two things are not mutually exclusive. And all you have to do is look at the fact check stats to know exactly how accurate each network is (of course FOX is a different story. CNN, et al, are not comparable to FOX. But even FOX reports real shit sometimes). I have a degree in Communications, so I do have at least some idea about how the news works, or at least like to think so.

Again, profit and accurate news is not mutually exclusive. Nor are reporting accurately and not covering everything you or I feel should get more attention ... Dude, at this point I feel like you're just ignoring every point I'm making.
I do agree nobody should ONLY watch CNN or whatever other American news network... Remember that the rest of the world exists out there, lol.
And FWIW, I think that whole Kanye at the WH thing was actually important news in its own right because of what it said about the leaders of the nations, but agree these networks should have a lot more variety, because each hour segment, with different hosts, tend to focus on the same story. They should all be made to focus on a different story each day, so you don't get 3 straight hours of the same. But in any case, either way, it's not fake news.
Again, I think we all get it. You assume everyone is only consuming news from the major American news networks and you don't like it. Got it. Let's move on.

All over the place, from many, many different sources from around the world. And I don't subscribe to CNN or any other American news network anymore, but used to, and catch some if I go to the States, so do know what's going on there.

For example? I don't understand why. I'm talking about hundreds of different sources. But okay... Obviously Canadian news, both local and national, BBC, Al Jazeera, probably a couple dozen English language newspapers from around the Globe (i.e. out of Britain, Africa, Europe, Asia, along with the NYT, WaPo, WSJ, etc), international local English language news reports and editorials shared by friends from different cities around the world .... and so on.

The Atlantic. WaPo. A variety of sources via Apple News (on the iPad while I'm on the treadmill). The Guardian.
And I follow a few conservatives (real ones, not MAGAites) on Twitter -- David Frum, Rick Wilson, Tom Nichols -- to keep me honest.
We're painting with broad brushstrokes when it comes to talk of mainstream media, etc., but I actually think a valid point is being made.
Look. The election of Agent Orange revived journalism, a field that largely seemed to be on life support before the 2016 election. But don't forget that media outlets gave that orange moron all kinds of free air time. Every time he opened his damn mouth, they were all over it, replaying videos (or putting up and reading tweets) over and over and over again. They actually helped reinforce his message. It was all about audience share and page views. As an aside, I think Rachel Maddow is the only TV anchor/ personality who refuses to air video of Agent Orange rambling, or to post giant screenshots of his tweets. I find MSNBC hard to take at times, but Maddow gets it: you can follow video clips of outrageous statements with a disclaimer, but with many people, the original nonsense is what will stick. Kind of like watching a car crash....
The other day, our fearless leader announced that he was going to enact a big tax cut for the middle class, before the elections. He can't do this. That's Congress's job, and they're on recess until after the elections. But that didn't stop Agent Orange from going on and on about it. AND -- most news outlets ran the story with a headline like "T---- proposes ten-percent tax cut for middle class."
The thing is, many, many people read ONLY the headlines on news stories. So even if the story beneath the headline says, well, actually, he can't do that, and, besides, Congress is out until after the elections, the takeaway for lots of people will be "Yay, another tax cut!" Framing matters. Headlines on those articles should have been: "Nearly two years into his job, President T---- still doesn't understand how the government works." But no --
So, yeah, I quit watching CNN when I saw that they had Corey Lewandowski on payroll. And, yes, as much as many individuals working in the media do excellent work (someone buy Daniel Dale a drink! He fact-checks AO's rally speeches on the fly, poor guy), the media companies are thinking about their bottom lines, so we get endless coverage of Kanye West, Horseface, Mushroom Dick, instead of more in-depth stories about boring stuff that's going to kill us, like climate change. /s
So I try to stick with outlets that I know will present more substantial coverage -- The Atlantic and the Guardian. And we ALL need to read everything with our critical thinking skills fully engaged. So many people, from all parts of the political spectrum, just don't do that.
All those who seek to destroy the liberties of a democratic nation ought to know that war is the surest and shortest means to accomplish it.

President Trump, speaking at an opioids event at the White House, first addressed the series of suspicious packages that have been discovered today.
He called for unity as officials investigate the possible explosive devices.
"I just want to tell you that in these times we have to unify, we have to come together and send one very clear, strong, unmistakable message that acts or threats of political violence of any kind have no place in the United States of America," he said.
Trump said "the full weight of our government" is investigating the packages and will "bring those responsible for these despicable acts to justice."
He added: "The safety of the American people is my highest and absolute priority," he said.

I agree that this was nicely said. I wish I could believe him. But I have to consider the source, and I've determined that they were just words without meaning. If you'd said them, I'd give them credence. Not so much coming from a guy who less than a week ago, also referencing an act of violence:
President Donald Trump praised a Republican congressman who body slammed a reporter last year, saying the lawmaker was "my guy."
Trump, speaking at a rally in Montana, said Rep. Greg Gianforte, who pleaded guilty to assaulting a reporter who asked him a question, was a good guy.
"Greg is smart and, by the way, never wrestle him," the president said, motioning as though he was slamming someone to the ground. "Any guy that can do a body slam — he's my guy."
He added Gianforte was a "great guy" and a "tough cookie."
So which is it? Praising acts of violence against Americans, or saying the safety of Americans is his highest priority? Unfortunately, I think unity is the last thing Drumpf wants.
