I think one of the lessons learned here, from watching bits and pieces of both sides the last couple weeks, is how people making false accusations can ruin a person's life and also the integrity of the media.  "I've got one thing I must confess, we try our criminals in the press, justice is a fading light"--Sheryl Crow.   I believe Ford--not sure about the other ladies.  I believe, too, that he could still be forgiven and elected to the Supreme Court.  They just wanted to make a point about how thorough of a background check a candidate of such an important position should have.  They were being tested, in my opinion.  In the end, she had a right to be heard.
Why should anyone be “forgiven” who does not acknowledge responsibility, genuinely apologize and attempt to change their behaviour?

Well, when the Senators express condolences to Kavanaugh and his family, that is code for "we don't believe her." So there you go - minds made up. He said/she lied, as far as they are concerned.
And the ones who added Dr. Ford as a side note were too cowardly to say it to her face.
  • With that said, I hope Kavanaugh doesn't make it through because of the building power the Republicans seem to be gaining in the Supreme Court arena.  It is a shame that a man's reputation would be somewhat ruined because of the man he used to be.  I sympathize, but then I remember how myself and other loved ones have been screwed over so royally in the last couple years.  It only takes a legion of demons to discredit a person's life and reputation.  They can rewrite history if they want to.  Hell, they can even erase memories these days.

Why should anyone tainted by this much controversy and a clear sense of angry partisanship with multiple sexual assault accusations against him be considered a reasonable choice for a lifetime appointment to the SCOTUS?

There was no reason for Trump, the GOP or BK to ever go a different route. They're banking on the same group that elected a sexual assaulter to not care about these unproven accusations. One day people that still think this way will go the way of the KKK and Nazi fucks; disgraced dark reaches of society. We're just not quite ready yet.

Go ask Mitch McConnell. I mean, I know you're asking a rhetorical question.

Edit to add: Have you seen who's in the White House? These traits are not dealbreakers for GOP leadership.

Someone actually wants to bet about whether or not these assaults happened? Are you fucking serious??
Hell yeah!  You down?  Although honestly I’d much rather Halifax-  he burps up most of the santorum we see in amt.
I’m not taking that bet. The repubs are in lock step and Kavanaugh will be confirmed. Congratulations.

He lied, he was belligerent and his opening statement was openly partisan. These should be disqualifying in a normal world. But we are not living in a normal world right now. None of this is normal.

Or why we don't even talk about it, most of the time. It's exhausting and, apparently, pointless.

I'm beyond angry. I don't even know what I'm feeling, or if there's a word for it.

I am with both of you. I am exhausted and depressed. I could be very angry but I won't allow myself to be eaten up by a belligerent drunk.

Talking about it and thinking it will matter does seem pointless right now, but we should never stop. That's what they want.

I'm surprised they didn't rise for the anthem, recite the pledge of allegiance and then thank the almighty (Trump) for providing them their daily bread before BK was sworn in today.

  • A bit of free advice.  Stop watching news on tv.    Find objective sources.  Granted that’s near impossible right now, so question everything including your own beliefs.  People you see on tv are not the majority of people.  It’s convenient to paint people in those broad strokes.  But remember, they’re all after a buck.
Care to speculate what our “objective “ sources were today?

Tragic thing is it's impossible to prove after so long..Had she said something 36 years ago and got it on record somehow...I think her story is true and his dodging the FBI investigation is my smoking gun.He should be insisting on it to defend his story and clear his name..Not allowing Judge to testify is mind blowing. You would think Republicans would want him there to back up ass hat..

Agreed. A Supreme Court justice should be an honorable, impartial jurist. BK came off as a hot-headed, partisan hack. Yelling, scowling, deflecting with Clinton references, lying. Those are normal traits for a Trump cabinet position, but not the SCOTUS.
