Weird day. Sad day.  Everything just stopped.  The shock is still there when i watch youtube clips of the morning shows that were covering it. That’s how i saw plane #1 and everything after.  Eating cereal watching Bryant Gumbel.  That 2nd plane is still probably the most shocking part of it.

I was explaining to my youngest that all 72 cable channels we got turned into either CBS or ABC.

RIP to every innocent person who we lost that day and everyone who got sick because of that day.  Those firemen and cops are true heroes.

This day always gets to me. I live in downtown Manhattan. I heard the first plane crash from my apartment as I was getting ready to go to work. I thought it was thunder but saw it was a bright sunny day. Then I turned on the news and everything changed. I worked at the Woolworth building at the time which was just around the corner from the WTC. I hadn’t left for work yet, and was told not to come in. We were not allowed back into our building for over 3 weeks. When we finally returned our office windows had a straight view of the rubble. It was surreal and so awful. The one thing that sticks with me was how sunny our offices were after that. I realized that part of the sun had been blocked by the towers when they were standing. I also remember how quiet my neighborhood was since vehicles were not allowed below 14th street unless they were emergency vehicles. Those of us who lived below 14th street had to show ID to get into our neighborhoods for a while. All the flyers of missing persons were hung everywhere. I can’t even put the heartbreak into words.
Me too. My connection is working across the river in Jersey City but instead of working 9 to 5, I worked nights and into the overnight. I worked the night before so I was in the concourse going from the PATH train to the subway at around 2:30 am coming from work and heading into a day off since I worked weekends some of the time. While I did not know anyone personally who was there at the time, my clear memory of being there some six hours before is haunting to me in a small way, obviously not like someone who was scheduled to be on the flights or be in the buildings but for various reasons changed plans. I know the Giants played Monday night so there's stories of people being late because they stayed up for a 9 pm start. I watch or listen to the reading of the names every year and that gets me, especially when I see names of people who were in the 20s at the time, since I'm 42.

Got a box full of similar. Will never forget where I was, what I was doing and what it felt like after. Hard to imagine.

searching for the more famous image I found this. sparked a question for me. in the famous image we see 3 firemen without masks...... how is their health today when so many at the site have experienced devastating health issues.....

this image gives much greater context and perspective imo....

I was just talking to my wife about this. This year seems like a lot less talk about 9/11. I don’t know if everyone is preoccupied about the debate. But no one at work mentioned  for the first time ever. Haven’t seen much on it.
I used to watch the morning news before work and the entire morning would be imagines and shared memories of the day. All I saw this morning was coverage of the debate. I’m sure if I kept watching it came up, but it had always been the biggest story of the day. This is the first year it get like it wasn’t.

I noticed that too, especially when I put the guide on for cable and the History Channel was only shows about it on the exact day. In the past those shows would air in the days leading up to it.

I saw a building with both a U.S. flag and and a P.O.W. black flag.  Neither was at half-mast, neither look like they had been taken down (and I saw no evidence of lighting for at night) for several years.
    Why do they even bother?

Speaking of flags, ever notice how many of these yahoos displaying the U.S. flag on their pick up trucks don't know the first thing about flag etiquette?  Yet they are the first to claim they are "patriots".

I was watching MSNBC yesterday, and they paused debate coverage and everything else at the moments when the planes hit to go to remembrance ceremonies at the WTC, Pentagon, and Shanksville.

I saw this thread yesterday and thought "why is this coming up now?...oh yeah." Partly because my mind still thinks it's July but also because it seems like this is a bit off of the radar. I think there could be several reasons: many adults now no longer even have pre-9/11 memories, the country is messed up in different (worse? at least more current) ways, and most angst is not directed at terrorism or foreign enemies but at domestic enemies.

  • I had to fly on 9/11 this year and while not concerned, it did hit me on a different level.

if you haven’t been to the museum and the site, I suggest you go…. While there, against one of the walls in the museum, I had an extreme physical reaction and had to walk away.  It was very unexpected and very severe. Never wish it on anyone but it was a truly life altering experience.

  • Visited this location in October 2001. Walked through the church and walked around to the viewing platform that overlooked the “pile.” Witnessed the volunteers feeding and tending to the first responders that wandered through. Watched the smoke rise into the sky on a beautiful fall morning. Watched the workers on the “pile.” Smelled the acrid stench. Saw the dust. Everywhere. Walked back to SoHo where lampposts along the way were covered with home made “missing” posters, all different, pictures and faces staring back at me. Stumbled upon a gallery space that was a pop up art gallery before “pop ups” were a thing. Pictures adorned the walls. Hung from string with clothesline clips. Taken by anyone. Of the Twin Towers. Before. During. After. They were for sale. Whatever you could afford or would pay. All proceeds to support the first responders and the rescue workers that were served by the church I was in a half hour prior. This picture was bought for me, framed and presented as a gift. Walking out of the gallery and not speaking for hours. Silent meditation despite being in the sound of NYC. Even then. Surrounded by humanity. Nothing to say. I’ll never forget. Ever.
