I remember being at my desk listening to the Bob & Tom Show on the radio when the second plane hit.

The first plane was thought to just be an accident, first reported as a small plane. I am pretty sure it was Tom that reported the second hit and said something like "this clearly is some sort of planned attack"

I often catch sight of aircraft that initially seems out of place only to discover its just an odd flight path but normal...

So much from that day is so vivid, still.

I was working in lower Manhattan on Water Street, half a mile/a 15 minute walk or so from the World Trade Center.

I had just gotten off the train, oblivious, and was ready to talk shit to my boss, who I beat in fantasy football after the Giants lost to the Broncos on Monday Night Football, when he told me about the first plane.

I looked out the window for the first and only time, and decided I wasn't going to look anymore.

We walked down 32 flights of stairs twice - when the building was evacuated the first time, and then the final time, after the first tower fell. I remember exactly what I was wearing (a green polo shit and blue slacks), and I remember being mad because I had brand new shoes on and was annoyed that we had to walk down 32 flights of stairs twice.

I remember the last work e-mail I got, from my brother: "Get out of there.".

The street, and everyone/everything on it, was covered with the dust/debris, like a snowstorm. I will never forget the smell or the taste.

I spotted a construction van with an address that was near where I lived, and they said they were going home, and offered me a ride, along with a tourist from Atlanta. I tried calling my uncle and cousin, who worked in Midtown, to see if they were ok and needed a ride home.

The two construction workers were under the first tower when it fell. They were completely covered in debris. One of them coughed up/threw up dust and debris for the entire ride home.

I got in that van at maybe 1030 AM. They dropped me off at a bar near their office at 530 PM, and my mom picked me up. I hugged my brother and went to bed.
May your days be long, til kingdom come.

About a year after, I was in an Italian restaurant a few blocks from my apartment, which was also a few blocks from Gracie Mansion. It was early on a Sunday or Monday night and only a few tables were taken. My girlfriend at the time (now wife), was visiting from overseas, and halfway through dinner I asked her, you know who that is two tables over?
    She was like, no.
    It's Giuliani, I said.
She was kind of in awe because he was so well respected in the media after 9/11.
When I think of him now, it always reminds me that 9/11 was a long time ago.

Seeing this date fade in the public eye every year is always a little sad to me. So many of us know exactly where we were when it happened, and now we're at a point where almost half the country doesn't even remember it. My first few years of teacher we'd have a big ceremony on this day, now there is a quick and rushed announced about it. It seems like an after thought to a lot of people. I imagine veterans of WWII thought the same way about Pearl Harbor when I was growing up.
