My mother thought that she might’ve killed a person once in the mid-1970s. She didn’t really care to know at the time whether or not she had killed the person. It was a fight AND flight situation.

I think she found out later that the person was still alive. I’ve never checked it out, though. Not really my concern.

Shouldn't you be concerned about whether your Dad is alive?

A friend of mine in high school became a two-time murderer, starting maybe a couple years after graduation. He murdered the first person in cold blood - totally innocent victim who he didn't know but stabbed to death at a party when he was in a rage. He just attacked the first person he saw. And then he was released under extenuating circumstances (drunk and with a learning disability leading to rage problems apparently), and he did it again, basically the same exact scenario. He was let out again (he had to do intensive counseling and shit). Last I heard he's happily married. He might have kids now. :disappointed: That must be VERY upsetting for the families of his victims.
The crazy thing is that he was a nice guy. He did get in fights once in a while, but besides that, he was alright, and I never thought he'd be dangerous to anyone. I hung out with him often enough. I liked him. My parents both taught him and they liked him too. And he was from a very nice, stable family with parents who really cared and two very successful siblings. He just had a screw loose... he would snap and be unable to control himself (and it was worse when he drank).

For those that are thinking, "What the f**k?" ... please understand this happened in Canada. Our courts love our murderers up here and do everything to avoid punishing them.
I was waiting for you to chime in on this one.
Lol. I knew for sure that Thirty would reply to that one... although I'm pretty sure we talked about this case before Thirty. I don't have a super one-sided attitude about this like your do (or maybe just am not inspired to generalize about it like your are, or to exaggerate or use sarcasm the way you do with it), but of course I acknowledge that sentences for violent offenders in Canada are really lacking far too often (not even close to always), and it's a real problem that badly needs to be addressed. I don't think I've ever met a Canadian who didn't think that. That is why I continue to be surprised that the justice system/government doesn't confront this problem. I mean, what in the fuck is stopping them?? It's not like they're being lobbied by child molesters and murderers.
I assume your comments about generalizing and sarcasm and exaggeration are directed at Thirty? if not i'm confused......

Wow, blown away by all of these comments about people that know a murderer. I really had to to rack my brain, but I cannot think of anyone that I’ve ever known that has become a murderer.  I’m sure it would make my hair stand if I found out otherwise.
One of my friends (a great and talented upcoming musician) was murdered my a psycho suicidal person that drove her car head on into him on the highway, though.
    This was him:

A guy I went to high school with killed someone in a bar fight when I was in college. From what I remember, details were sketchy about why they were fighting and what actually happened during the fight. The other guy initially survived, but died a day or 2 later in the hospital. It's jarring to find out about something like that, but knowing who that classmate was, I wasn't shocked about it. He came from a well to do family and they hired a lawyer that was able to get him little to no jail time.
    Was this in Columbia?
No. It happened somewhere upstate. Spartanburg if I recall correctly. I just remember someone sending me a link to the newspaper write up about it.
  • As high school was ending a buddy of mine started dating this girl. Her old boyfriend had control and anger issues and would seek my buddy out, and give him a beating with his friends. Wellllll, my friend started carrying a knife and one day (lo and behold) this asshat happened to fall on it. End of beatings. End of story.

Not to derail on a debate about what constitutes murder but if you think someone is going to punch you around and you bring a knife, and he dies?  To me, that is murder.
    Take your ass kicking.
    Bring your friends
    Call the police
    Even bring a bat.
Whatever...but carrying a knife and using it to avoid being punched up is murder, to me, if you stab someone to death.
I have taken a few beatings in my day and they suck.  I am very glad I never stabbed anyone to stop them.
That is me, though.  I totally recognize others might feel differently and I am fully aware that society these days looks at an ass kicking as something totally different than it did 25 years ago.

Btw, I do think it is awful that some asswipe chased the guy and beat him up because he was jealous...clearly that is wrong and the guy deserved a beating or punishment for it.  (I just dont think he deserved death.)

not murder. murder requires some type of intent. protection is not intent. manslaughter at best.

I dated a girl in high school who's ex was the angry jealous type.  She went to another school and I went to surprise her one day after school not knowing that she wasn't going to be there.  My buddy went with me and while waiting in the parking lot we noticed these two guys watching us for a while.  I came to find out one of them was her jealous ex who wanted to attack me but his friend(the other guy) talked him out of it.  She ended up dumping me to get back with him.

Interesting. I actually think that carrying a weapon because you have been threatened with a phyisical attack of any kind is perfectly reasonable. This is actually one of the few instances when I think carrying a concealed firearm is justified. I don't think that "just being afraid of getting beaten up with someone's fists" negates a person's right to defend themselves with a weapon. I know that if I was actually being legitimately threatened like that I would definitely want to carry a weapon with me until the threat was over, and it would be a weapon that could kill the person, i.e. a sharp object that I would try to stick into the person's jugular vein if they tried to attack me. To me, that would absolutely be justified self-defense.

Huh? Premeditated self-defense? ... I guess.... what other kind of self-defense is there when you're being specifically threatened by someone? I think someone who is being threatened with violence and doesn't take precautions to defend themselves against such threats is a fool.
