Mayweather vs McGregor-ridiculous spectacle or legitimate sporting event?

when the idea of this first surfaced, I literally laughed out loud. I thought "ok, this is just Conor trying to be Ric Flair, trying to make as much money as he can, trying to become as famous as he can as fast as he can". I never in a million years thought this would actually happen.
But it is.
I'm torn about whether to lay down howevermuchmoneyitcosts for the PPV. Something tells me it's going to be a clown show. Something also tells me it could be the most epic event in recent sports memory.
For example, I skipped watching Ronda Rousey vs Holly Holm, thinking "ah, it'll be another 45 second fight". BIG mistake. I was IN Vegas when McGregor was fighting Aldo, and my wife and our friends weren't very receptive to "wasting our night" sitting in a bar watching MMA. I thought "ah, Aldo's just going to dance around him for 5 rounds and squeek out a point victory anyway". We were walking by an Irish pub when I heard all of this screaming and cheering and I saw on the big screens through the front window, Aldo on the mat and McGregor's arms in the air. BIG mistake.
Shows how good am I at predicting these things.
Part of me doesn't want to see Conor get the embarrassment of a lifetime. but another part of me does. Another part of me doesn't want him to get another reason to think he's the greatest thing in the world. And yet another part of me does, too.
I've never been a big boxing fan. So laying down $100 or whatever it is for one fight seems like a lot, given how dreadful it potentially could end up.
But it could also end up the most exciting and talked-about event in sports in a very long time.
Anyone watching it?

I posted about this just recently (along with how our cable company seems to be mum on how much it'll cost). My husband is up for it, and "predicted" it will over by Round 5.
The idea of melding boxing and martial arts is fascinating to me. Both require such different yet similar skills - and mindsets.
Also, the idea of getting a great buzz on and watching what I think WILL be a badass bout sounds pretty damned good.

Granted Floyd has picked his fights as carefully as anyone in the sport and hasn't faced a worthy opponent in a decade, but the best boxers in the world can't land a punch on him so someone coming from a completely different sport, sure as hell isn't going to be able to either.
Floyd doesn't have the power to knock him out at over 40, unless McGregor is completely worthless. The only way McGregor gets knocked out in my mind is if he is completely shot by round 8 or 9. He is facing the most fit boxer, probably in history of the sport in a 12 round fight.
Mayweather knows he is going to win this fight easily. Mayweather is not risking a perfect record to an MMA guy unless he is 100% sure he is going to win.
There is going to be a flurry of action early on with McGregor trying to end it early. McGregor isn't going to land anything. Tons of shots to Floyd's shoulders and missing completely followed by Floyd dancing around for the next 9 rounds, landing whatever he wants, but not throwing too much.
Every video from McGregor's camp has looked like crap and a joke, EXCEPT the sparring knockdown of Paulie. He was beat up pretty good. Adds an ounce of interest.
So basically this is a complete joke, buuuuut, I cannot friggen wait. Have an awesome day planned. Round of golf at 1, Phils/Cubs at 7 in the diamond club directly by home plate followed by the fight at my place.

Do you think that Floyd would give up his perfect record for another $150 or so million? Would he fix the fight for a rematch that is 10 times bigger where he wins?
I don't think so. I think the only thing he likes more than money is his perfect record, but you never know.
Oh yeah- a complete money grab. If McGregor somehow knocked out that scumbag, it would be one of the coolest things to ever happen in sports history. If the more likely thing happens with Floyd dancing around for 12 rounds and McGregor can't touch him then it's going to suck. I'm fully expecting the suck.
That's a nice little Saturday you got there. I have my fantasy football draft Saturday with all my really good friends. Starting around 3, then we'll play some poker and then the fight. Going to be a great day!
Yeah, man. Solid day there too. Good times.
Any average professional boxer can beat McGregor in boxing.

one thing people aren't counting on are the gloves they agreed to use. why in god's name Mayweather decided to give McGregor any advantage there is beyond me, and why the athletic commission went against their own rules makes even less sense. But Mayweather probably knows that McGregor's hand speed will be significantly diminished with the bigger glove size, even if he conceded to going to 8oz. MMA gloves are 4 or 6. it seems small, but it WILL make a difference.
Dana White keeps talking smack about how amazing McGregor looks in the ring. White fixes to make a lot of money/exposure off of this fight, so I'm not buying it.
I will be shocked if McGregor is able to land any significant shot to the head. Unless Mayweather showboats and goes all Anderson Silva in the Weidman fight. or if McGregor's power is more than Mayweather's defense can handle. But I doubt it.

I don't really understand that glove thing either. Figure at least asking the commission is possibly in the contract? Floyd has fought pretty much his entire career at 8 ozs though.
Dana White is a clown
Agreed, but I don't see Floyd showboating. Dude is as dumb as rocks outside of the ring but as smart as anyone inside.
Mayweather is not a good human being. Clearly.
No way he loses this fight.
No. Way.
Love reading about how Vegas is sweating how much they should lay off. Hedging is an important part of protecting the casinos but when every sharp is convinced Floyd cannot lose there could be a huge flurry of money late. Only huge bet on Floyd I saw so far was the Maloof brothers.
I'm traveling to a baseball tournament this weekend/next week so I do not know if people will be watching. I will be checking my phone at the least. I would love to see Floyd knock him out but expect he dances his way to an easy points victory. As much as I would laugh if Floyd lost, I hate MMA smack talk on Boxing. Watch how an in his prime MMA fighter boxes a well past his prime Boxing legend.

The odds are amazing right now at -400. It should be -4000000. -400 is his odds against a a good boxer.
The most likey outcome is another defensive snoozefest by mayweather that gets him a win in 12 rounds. Or, mcgregor gets gassed and loses by TKO in mid-late rounds. No chance Mayweather KOs him imo.
Or, mcgregor KOs mayweather early. He's proven his doubters wrong on many occasions. Floyds defensive wizardry is against orthodox boxers. Mcgregor s style will be anything but orthodox and could allow the unexpected to happen.
i want a mcgregor KO in the worst way, but if I was betting, I'd bet on a mayweather win in a snoozefest.

"We are going to fight, but we are going to pretend we don't have legs and that the ground is lava. Good plan"
The promotion is a racket, the best fighters rarely fight in their primes anymore, and there hasn't been a truly compelling boxer in decades.
This is the final nail in the sport's coffin, either way.
McGregor has a better chance than any boxing fan wants to admit. His boxing style is not something Mayweather has ever faced, and his power is legitimate.
He's inside Mayweather's head already, could he pull off a rope a dope?
