Definitely went to Les Halles when he was there. Decent steak frites, roast chicken, and a good vibe. I do not recall him specifically, but I would guess we were both drinking at Desmond's Tavern at the same time. I lived right around the corner for almost 10 years and frequented both of those spots. Desmond's was one of my favorite dive bars in NYC.

I went to Les Halles once, but I think he may have already left. The food was great, though.

I've been to several of the restaurants he visited over the years. Most have become extremely popular (and not always for the best), but that is just the legacy of his influence.

Coolest one was in Hanoi where he sat down with Obama and had Bun Cha. It's become completely touristy, but still very cool to visit and the food was top notch.

My favorite of the places he visited is also super touristy, but lived up to the hype. Swan Oyster Depot in San Fran. Strangely, their oysters were not great. But their dungeness crab offerings were outstanding. I even said to my brother, this could be better than Maine lobster. They also have different seafood carpaccios that are absolutely delicious. It is a quirky place. You basically go for breakfast as you might at the fish market in Japan.

This weekend I went to Ludi’s in downtown Seattle for some Filipino breakfast. I got the Combo Silog which included a breaded pork chop, longganisa sausage, garlic longganisa sausage, beef lumpia, eggs, and garlic rice. This place is one of my favorite breakfast spots in the city.

One of the great things about serving in the Navy, especially on the West Coast, was the amount of spouses that were from the Philippines. Every time there was a command lunch or if guys brought in food from their wives, the food was amazing.

Went to Jordans Lobster Farms and really wanted the oysters.  My buddy talked me into getting the steamers instead.

Steamers were excellent.  Calamari was fantastic.  I had the lobster which is just an expensive way to eat butter.

Those Dungees are caught right there where as those oysters were flown in. Most likely from here on Long Island.  Those should have been good too though.

Another go at Bun Thit Nuong. I was a little heavy handed on the roasted peanuts, but I just love loads of them on this dish.

That would be strange for them to fly in oysters from the East Coast. We have great oyster farms in the Bay area and also up to PNW.

spent extra time on the pork. Seared it up. Put some hickory sticks on the grill. Let them sit while I got the tomatillos, poblanos jalapeños onions ready. Pureed them up. Now simmering away. Should be fantastic. Its been a while.
I know t h e extra time with the pork will reward my tastebuds!

Yes! Had yucca too. Diced it up as a different addition. Mortered (sp) up pepper, Mexican salt, whole cumin. Seasoned the pork generously.

Nah, those oysters were West Coast, mostly from Washington State and BC. Blue Points would have been better. But if you are ever near SF and have the time, go up to Tomales Bay. The Hog Island oyster farm and The Marshall Store have some of the best oysters I have ever had. They pull them right out of the bay as you are there, and at Hog Island they dump them right on your table. You have to do the shucking!
