It's possible...but a loss that large doesn't make sense for someone like him. A large loss in one activity can offset income in another so they are clearly either not planning very well for him or he is a complete loser at making money in real estate.

All of the details have not come out but it does look like his interest income is increasing each year. I'm curious to find out why.

Except I'd refer to it as the same old "corruption" game. If you read the J6 Committee summary and compare POOTWH's behaviors with all of his past shenanigans, its all corruption, all the time. POOTWH genuinely believes that the law, "norms", practice, policy, whatever, do not apply to him and if confronted, he lawyers up, delays, files lawsuits and threatens, and ultimately buys his way out by offering up huge sums of money (POOTWHU anyone?). Now they’re uncovering questions that he avoided taxes on large gifts, all because they are reviewing and releasing his returns. Saying it’s not helpful to release taxes of a private citizen is not applicable here. If the entire country except one is subject to IRS regulations, and presidents can evade taxes by evading regulations because they alone can override the treasury, then the only way to enforce tax laws is via congressional oversight and public scrutiny

Now they’re uncovering questions that he avoided taxes on large gifts, all because they are reviewing and releasing his returns. Saying it’s not helpful to release taxes of a private citizen is not applicable here. If the entire country except one is subject to IRS regulations, and presidents can evade taxes by evading regulations because they alone can override the treasury, then the only way to enforce tax laws is via congressional oversight and public scrutiny 

But all that could be accomplished without public releasing. The IRS could start pursuing him today irrespective of whether the release occurred.

I think the hotels he owns are public knowledge.  Tax returns are not going to show which gov't are staying the night at the hotels.

I agree that it's up to the Ways and Means committee now, but I'm not sure it is helpful to release the taxes of a private citizen.  I'm sure it will be weaponized by the right in some way. 

Coming back to this point my old pal Suozzi (on the w and m committee, for at least a few more hours) clued me into a little fact I wasn’t sure about..that all presidents are subject to mandatory tax audits, and despite trump claiming he was, and that was the reason he wasn’t releasing his taxes publicly, never in fact was audited by the irs.

so we have level on top of level of potential crimes. Did Mnuchin forget to perform the audit, or was he coerced not to do so? Secondly, any violations of law such as emoluments clause, should we reward presidents for this behavior, by giving them incentive to run out the clock and say “too bad clock ran out, I am no longer subject to public scrutiny!” Nothing like 700 million eyeballs to keep future presidential candidates honest on their taxes and financial relationships, both domestic and international . Too bad many Americans disagree.

Yes, the IRS failed in its obligations.  I'm not sure that means the taxes need to be released in order to hammer the IRS.  

I don’t care about hammering the IRS. If Trump coerced his minions to not follow law, then yes, laws need to be enforced. But if we let the clock run out on trump releasing taxes, what’s to stop DeSantis from financial irregularities and lying about it  publicly? Let’s have Putin help pick the next president. No laws were broken though.  The IRS issue is a policy break,  not a law.  And releasing them now doesn't change any calculation for Desantis. If you're hiding something,  you're not going to release them.

I'm saying the audit requirement for presidents isn't a law,  it's a policy. 

 IRS regulations are stronger than policy. typically IRS regulations are followed by ordinary citizens, because non compliance leads to bad outcomes for taxpayers . Regulations interpret and give directions on complying with the law.

   Where a law could have been broken is why the IRS did not follow its regulations. If it was pressure from trump to the treasury to cover up a likely violation of emoluments, that’s where laws may have been broken.

Except I'd refer to it as the same old "corruption" game. If you read the J6 Committee summary and compare POOTWH's behaviors with all of his past shenanigans, its all corruption, all the time. And its the same pattern of defense. And its rife and its ongoing and constant. POOTWH genuinely believes that the law, "norms", practice, policy, whatever, do not apply to him and if confronted, he lawyers up, delays, files lawsuits and threatens, and ultimately buys his way out by offering up huge sums of money (POOTWHU anyone?). But it wasn’t. It’s only seeing light of day now, because congress won the right in court to review. Once staffers get their eyes on it, details are getting released either properly or improperly. Might as well codify regulations into law.

America is a greater place when all future candidates know that any tax shenanigans will become public knowledge.
