    WASHINGTON (AP) — The coronavirus pandemic sent the U.S. economy plunging by a record-shattering 32.9% annual rate last quarter and is still inflicting damage across the country, squeezing already struggling businesses and forcing a wave of layoffs that shows no sign of abating.

    The economy's collapse in the April-June quarter, stunning in its speed and depth, came as a resurgence of the viral outbreak has pushed businesses to close for a second time in many areas. The government’s estimate of the second-quarter fall in the gross domestic product has no comparison since records began in 1947. The previous worst quarterly contraction — at 10%, less than a third of what was reported Thursday — occurred in 1958 during the Eisenhower administration.

    Soon after the government issued the bleak economic data, President Donald Trump diverted attention by suggesting a “delay” in the Nov. 3 presidential election, based on his unsubstantiated allegations that widespread mail-in voting will result in fraud. The dates of presidential elections are enshrined in federal law and would require an act of Congress to change.

    Why do so many still support Trump?  I keep seeing polling numbers that show for the most part Biden with a "15 point" lead...  but then the graph usually shows  BIDEN: 55   TRUMP 40.   

    If that represents a percentage, does that mean that of the people polled, 40% would still choose Trump?  And if so, why? 

    Like apart from all the remarkably absurd things he has said, done, and tweeted...  what has he honestly done well as POTUS? And why do people still think he would be good as POTUS? Factual answers only if possible.

    I don't really have a "factual" answer.  I think it's parts of:
    • Some people support the party regardless of who it is.
    • We're at a heightened level of division and some people value pissing off the left more than they do the actual good of the country
    • It's morphed into a cult. Trump has told them that everyone else is lying to them and he's the beacon of truth. It's between difficult and impossible to convince someone the leader of their cult is wrong.
    • Add to the two previous bullets that we've also evolved greatly in the area of mis-information.  It used to be Fox News and AM radio giving biased takes on actual news.  New you have people getting most of their information from Q, etc., which provide nothing more than goofy conspiracy theories. Fox News was a game changer in the same way that the Model-T was.  Both were innovative but have been bested many times over.

    I’m not as informed as you  so not going to get into a back and forth. I just remember reading some things and maybe they were bullshit.

    I simply think when time is of the essence, I cringe when I hear these proposals described as a starting point. Consider what the other side will agree with and put together something that has real potential for broader support.
