It’s more a matter of respect than hate. It’s tough to respect someone attached to a shithead like Trump for so many reasons.
And there’s no point cozying up to them. They’re not changing their minds because left leaning people are being nice to them.
If the US can’t take down Trump decisively in an election... then it has problems far greater than one could ever have surmised and the issue isn’t Trump. The issue is does the US have a soul."My brain's a good brain!"0 -
The people I associate with are not "deplorable." Some of the things that some of them think are whacked. I am the first person to call out unacceptable remarks or behavior when I hear them or see them, no matter who it is. But I am smart enough to know that some remarks and behavior are more deplorable than others.
To suggest all Trump voters are "pure evil" because of one decision they made on one day out of 1,460 days is misguided, at best, and just plain destructive, at worst. When we lose the ability to understand the nuance and complexity of human behavior and psychology, we are no better than the fringe minority of tools who believe Clinton ran a sex ring in a DC pizza shop. Let's not forget that the person who shot up a baseball field of Congress people was a Bernie Sanders supporter. Don't even start the "moral equivalency" bullshit, either. To suggest that people don't live their lives on a continuum is very dangerous thinking, no matter who is thinking it. I'm so sick of the smug, moral superiority of people on both extremes. One shooter on one side versus ten shooters on the other? It doesn't matter. Really, it doesn't, except to say that one side of maniacs is out-gunned. That matters. In fact, on the days when the impending civil war talk ramps up, I think it would be smart to buy a gun and learn how to shoot it. What fool wouldn't own a gun during these dark times, I think to myself. How is this healthy?
Don't get me wrong. I certainly get the frustration. When I listen to Trump speak, I get physically ill in my stomach. My mind clouds over and turns to despair. I have to change the channel most of the time, especially when he is in full-on rally mode. That is scary to watch and listen to. But none of the T-voters I know -- none -- have been to a Trump rally, nor would they go if they could. They just don't care that much.
There have been a handful of days I have despaired so deeply about this situation, I have stayed curled in a ball in my bed in the dark all day. But what is the choice I have when I get up? Live in a country, a community, a workplace, a family where I hate half the people I know? I bold the word hate because sometimes the things I hear the left say about the right does border on hate speech. The choice I'm making is to refuse to participate in it. I believe we are better than that. We need to be better than that.

This isn't that complicated. If you tell the masses they "haven't figured it out", it implies you are aware of what it is, while 'they' aren't. That in turn implies that you believe you have more facts, or a better understanding of the facts, or a better ability to connect the dots than the masses. Once again, if it wasn't your intention to suggest you have better skills of deduction, you should know that in my opinion your communication style betrayed your actual intentions. Take it or leave it, I don't really care beyond a weak attempt to have better quality debates on here.

Can we please stop over-estimating how bigly Trump won? If we can just start there, the "problem of the deplorable Trump voters in America" shrinks exponentially. We all need to quit with the catastrophic thinking.
Good day, all. I'm off to the farmer's market to buy my local sustainable beef and handmade non-GMO bread with only five natural ingredients. Haha.0 -
Further to my post above: not respecting someone’s political or social views does not mean you cannot like them or respect them for other things.
The problem as it currently stands is that- with his outrageous behaviour- Trump has managed to entrench himself as the focal point of American life and his extremism has eclipsed all other aspects of life that have the potential to unify people.

I engage with Trump voters all the time. I've got Trump voters in my family (siblings, in-laws, cousins, etc). Some are spouses of best friends, some are colleagues. They range in academic intelligence from college educated to high school drop out, six figure incomes to welfare beneficiaries, redneck country hicks to country club executives. One is Native American. One is African-American. I know a few people whom I suspect are secret voters as well, but I've never brought it up.
I have interesting, civil conversations with many of them, and sometimes I completely agree with their perspectives. Some of them are impossible to talk to, so we don't talk about politics at all if I can avoid it, particularly my two brothers. I was with one of them last Sunday when the Barr memo appeared. Our two minute exchange ended when he insisted Hillary Clinton was going to jail, just you wait. Apparently the only reason she hasn't been indicted yet is because "they didn't want it to look like revenge after the election. They're just waiting." How did I not know that? The worst time was the weekend of the Kavanaugh confirmation vote. We had a family gathering that weekend, too. That was rough.
After we survive what feels like the end times, though, all these people will still be my family, friends, and colleagues. My life isn't worse for knowing any of them, and some of them I couldn't imagine living my life without. Some relationships are strained, but we make it work. It's too bad that not everybody understands how to relate to people who are different from them.
The same with nazis. They were not keeping up the movie-villain schtick when coming home to their family after a long day at Birkenau.
People consist of both good and bad. Not saying your friend is equal to Kiefer Sutherland in Jury: A Time to Kill or Ralph Fiennes in Schindler's List.
But supporting someone verging on being a white nationalist and above that is a crook and REALLY DUMB - still says something when you can support the other guy (Hillary or whoever) instead.
I mean, Climate Change is already slowly destroying our planet, so have fun backpacking while supporting a guy who doesn't even know what climate change is, stopping the fight against it, and I bet hurt small animals growing up.

He's a really nice, good person who would risk his life for a friend (or maybe even someone not a friend- he's a firefighter), who has no racial or gender biases, who would make a great hiking or camping partner but who agrees with the ideas about economics that I personally think are totally out to lunch. Can I ask you this, does he act or talk in any way like Trump? If not, then it's safe to assume there are policies that he likes that Trump supports for whatever reason...No. Not at all.
