It's more than that. Depreciation would allow you to offset income but it isn't likely going to create massive losses that offset all of your other income. At a minimum it shows that he is NOT successful.
Depreciation can be manipulated to obtain the best tax advantage. The best tax strategy for tRump would be to pay tax every year and use up the 10%-24% tax brackets and push depreciation forward to offset large income years being taxed at 36% or higher.
That he has those massive losses shows that it is not a planning strategy....he's losing his ass.
