perhaps I think the point being missed is that no one cares how it’s paid for.  My friends who all voted for him thought is was awesome that he said that but never assumed it would happen. Maybe some did?  Americans just want a wall and/or protection.

No, George W’s and Obama’s admins  built 600 miles or so of fencing/wall. I assume that’s what he’s talking about.  Under trump they’ve built some/added to it already also, so therefore the “finish the wall” statements.
It's gaslighting so he can declare victory.  You know this.
I don’t even know what that means, man!
Gaslighting is a form of psychological manipulation that seeks to sow seeds of doubt in a targeted individual or in members of a targeted group, making them question their own memory, perception, and sanity...

In the Trump universe, this means saying the same thing over and over to where it becomes common belief, even if not rooted in truth.  So what I mean is that once he understood he was not going to get money to "build the wall", just this past week, he started saying "finish the wall, not build it because you all know we've already started building it".  This is how he will declare victory to his supporters.
Right on, thanks for the good explanation! That totally could be possible, wouldn’t shock me.  To me he doesn’t need to declare victory, he already did so by getting elected.  As far as the wall, I think he’ll sign the bill to not shutdown the govt but then declare an emergency anyway to get the money.  It’ll go through the courts of course, but I don’t think he cares, he knows he’ll get so props from his base by declaring the emergency he prob figures it’s worth it.  I heard today that his approval numbers are now the highest they’ve ever been?! Not surprised again, when he gets people fired up with his rallies it only helps him, and the more resistance he gets, it seems to end up helping repubs somehow.
No, the approval numbers are not the highest they've ever been. Who was it that said that - Trump? The numbers fell a lot during the shutdown and rose a few points after he agreed to reopen the government, but still far from his highest ratings. Approval ranging from about 40.5 - 44%, disapproval about 55%.
Weird, I thought it was at 52. You’re prob right- I said it with a ? becuse I only heard the local rock radio morning people talking about it- because when I search it it’s sites like Rush, Breitbart, Newsmax, etc.  Here’s the first one

Rasmussen is usually 5 points more generous to Republicans than any other poll, due to their sampling.  He definitely got a bump from the state of the union, which is common.  He'll definitely do something dumb to tear that back down soon enough though.  Here's a good summary of polls.  https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/trump-approval-ratings/?ex_cid=rrpromo

I think you're right on declaring the emergency.  I felt that was the only way out from the beginning for him.  It will be stopped by the courts, based on on precedent and the fact that Congress is responsible for appropriating.  It really is a violation of the separation clauses.  But I don't think he cares if it gets caught up in court or if the wall ever is actually built.
Five points?  That puts him at 47.  See you in 2024.

Over reaction.  He will certainly do stupid things before an election.  Plus it's a tracking poll to start,  I believe.

Cincy brought up a really good point in one of these threads recently: highly educated people are not reproducing as much as simple folk are.

There’s an inherent problem with that situation when it presents itself in a democracy and I don’t need to spell out what it is.

If you pander to the religious groups (anti-abortion), satisfy the racists (walls... tell them they are cool), cozy up to the NRA, and spark the imagination of the dumb folk (MAGA)... you’ve managed to encapsulate a big chunk of people.

Just maybe a bigger chunk that can be overcome with good sensibility.

I’m growing pessimistic. That f**king idiot might be around for longer than anyone with half a brain or remote sense of decency might possibly have imagined.

However, as the demographics of the US change, this will balance out.
Plus, I have faith in the young voters. If I listened to everything my grandparents said, I never would have voted for Obama. As future generations age, the idea of 'white' America will dissipate and the xenophobic message of the Republicans will become a relic. I hope.

....and he'd still be about 25 billion dollars away from the amount needed to build the wall he promised.

Trump to sign border deal averting shutdown, declare emergency in pursuit of wall funding, McConnell says

This is actually what I've been telling people who ask what I thought would happen (with the part about how it will fail in the courts added), but that doesn't make it any easier to believe.

It seems pretty clear this was going to happen. In my opinion though, the optics don't look good at all, because this same course of action could've occurred before people's livelihoods were put at stake for a month.

They may lose in the courts but with his supporters it will look like he did not give up. It was his only move since he put himself in a corner. It will be entertaining looking at all the hypocrites though be ok with this when just one president ago they were up in arms.

Exactly. He knows it will be challenged and that it may not happen. This is all for show so he can say he fought and the Dems roadblocked him. It's obvious.... To everyone except his supporters.

Team Trump Treason would have said, “cockblocked” him. Just saying.
