Well it's not a complete surprise. People have been asking Trump about his political views for decades, and if he would consider running for President for almost as long. And he never ruled it out. His candidacy has been considered by many a real possibility for years. Maybe not a likely scenario, but it's still been on the radar. Honestly, I think the idea only became really idiotic in the last 10 years or so, when Trump really started going off the rails and got involved with social media and reality TV. He wasn't nearly as much of a joke before that, and his brain cells seems more intact until around that time. And then something changed for the worse (not that he was very good to begin with). I think it's a slow decent into some form of dementia myself, but who knows.

The religious right wins because Trump makes it less than one year before getting sick of it and resigning. Mike Pence gets three years but is unpopular enough that he does not even seek election in 2020.

Actually, that's exactly what market economists are predicting. People who's lives, money, and career depend on their predictions. The markets hate volatility and uncertainty, and those are the cheif characteristics Trump brings to the plate.
