"Down" does not fit the theme/mood of Riot Act

And as I argued, how does "Thumbing My Way" fit the mood of that album? Nothing riotous about it.

How does Release fit on Ten. There's already ten songs! :P

They have that song.. Sirens.. in their catalog. I thought Olé was bad, but then they came up with this song.

Hopefully nobody gets butt-hurt by this thread. If I had to nit-pick, which is kind of what this thread is about, I would say:
-Putting two sub-par songs, "Sleeping By Myself" and "Let the Records Play" on Lightning Bolt... I think "Of the Earth" would've fit excellently right after "Swallowed Whole"... for my money, would've been a great Pearl Jam album if you swap those two for "Of the Earth"

Completely agree. If these songs aren't b-sides....then you just didn't write enough quality songs to fill an album.

Whats the difference between Let the Records play and Spin the Black Circle (Grammy winner). If one is a throwaway song, so is the other. Or?

I like Sleeping By Myself. On ukelele Songs. Those drums on the PJ version. What were they thinking?

Dark album, sad brooding song...yeah, I think they fit pretty well together.

Another odd one is even considering Education as an album opener. Love the song- can't understand how it should open any album.

I've never seen a list with opening Education. The original track list had it closing Binaural after Parting Ways. I'm thinking that's what you were going for.

On another topic, I think that Thumbing My Way absolutely fits on Riot Act. It's perfect on Riot Act. As solid as Down, Otherside and Undone are, they don't belong on Riot Act. I'll cause some waves now and say that Can't Keep not only is a bad way to kick off the album, it's a bad song for an album. It's w b-side at best. Whether as a solo uke or full band.

Personally, I think the weirdest thing this band has done is ending Vitalogy with Stupid Mop and including all of the experimental tracks on that record. Take away that stuff (which I wouldn't do, because I like them) and you have an amazingly uptempo record that just keeps kicking your ass on song after another.

This! That place was ready to explode after Release.....was still a great show and the crowd was awesome, but arms aloft was a real bummer. Corduroy in that spot and the place would have went insane.

This is the correct answer. Stupid Mop is the weirdest and most pointless thing the band has ever produced. Followed by dog collars.

I think I would have to say that Ole' is IMO the worst song Pearl Jam has ever created. Nails on a chalkboard for me... so, I dont think it was weird... I wish it didnt exist. But hey, to each their own!

Agreed... I hated any tinkering with the old tunes from Lost Dogs. You mentioned re-recorded vocals, but I hated any tinkering period. "Drifting" was a different version than the original Christmas single... "Dirty Frank" was different... "Footsteps", "Hard To Imagine"... all different versions from the originals that had surfaced elsewhere earlier. Thought is was a rotten decision.

How bad was the commercial? I get the Target thing as a whole. CD's are dissapearing out of stores and it gets harder and harder to retail them. I think they self released that album, so they didn't have a proper record label to distribute it. Thus their options were probably online only, or find a big department store to sell it (which a bunch of bands tried, but has now died off). I guess the right answer is online only? :)
  • The Target stuff never bothered me. Like stated above, music sales and distribution have changed greatly over the years. It's not like the band went with Wal Mart or Best But. Target, as far as major retailers are concerned, is pretty reputable.

Yeah, when that whole campaign came out my immediate, initial reaction was "Cool, at least they went with Target!" It never bothered me either.

I loved the Target deal. My favorite "big" store by far.

I give them thousands a year just on groceries
