the whole reason they got all the uber fans into that space was so they would know where we were at and could go out on the town with their families and enjoy themselves. ;-)

It was a very smart plan too. Enjoying dinner outside on Newbury Street on a Saturday night with no fan interaction was quite remarkable for them. And then strolling down to Ben & Jerry's for dessert, not a care in the world.
Best night out they've had as a collective in decades.
I'm thinking they would take advantage of being in Boston and go to Emack & Bolios or maybe even Shake Shack.
I heard they were at the Barking Crab and then Tia's on the waterfront. This was after a full day in Quincy Market.
Boom apparently rode the Swan Boats like 5 times in a row.

This thread has totally devolved already, but I joked with a friend who suggested the rumor that the band would show up and play a set at HOB that the whole reason they got all the uber fans into that space was so they would know where we were at and could go out on the town with their families and enjoy themselves. ;-) Seriously though, the entitlement of some of the fans of this band is odd and vaguely teenage or some kind of stunted thinking error and is kind of a turn off

I bet this is a huge part of it, for real.

This was quite entertaining seeing how defensive people are about the suggestion that at the one and only fan club party of 2016 (I can't recall if their have been any others except for maybe 2013 in Seattle) that a band member might have wanted to show up. Believe it or not, I actually wouldn't care if the band would have played a few songs (really, I think I've seen enough shows now), and I personally wouldn't have cared if a band member showed up at all. There is just a part of my brain that looks at it from what I think is an unbiased perspective. I'm not some self-entitled fan (I only went to the party because friends were going), but just think where there was a RARE fan club organized event while the band was in town that it wouldn't be unusual for a member of the band to show up. Now good points have been made to say that logistically or security wise it wouldn't work, and it doesn't mean they don't care for their fans. Maybe it just seemed strange to me that we are all at this club to watch this band called Pearl Jam that we are so passionate about, and the five individuals that created this monster are not there. This got me thinking then why would I be there if the people that created all this didn't want to be there? It is tough to explain and that is why I said earlier if we were all sitting in a room together you wouldn't be so horrified by my comment. It is why I started drinking that night because I was so bored I was thinking about all of this - ha.

The reason I posted a lot though in this thread is I get fired up when people try to claim being in Pearl Jam in 2016 is some tough gig. I'm sure it has its stresses, but let's get real and say that a single-mom working 40 hours a week is a whole lot tougher gig than being in Pearl Jam. Immature as it is, but it fires me up. It is no knock on the members of Pearl Jam (we'd all want to trade places), but it is reality. When most people travel for work they aren't spending time on the freedom trail or doing other sightseeing. Good for the band.

  • again, no one was getting defensive, or being a kneejerk pj apologist. at least not from my perspective. no one said pj is a tough gig nowadays. but to be honest, if I played a 3+ hour show Friday, and I'm playing another one Sunday, I'm probably taking it easy Saturday. But regardless of that, who cares if it's a fanclub thing? The fan club prez was there. it was organized by the fanlucb for the fanclub. I think what got most people a bit up in arms was your assertion that the band doesn't care about their fans. AND that if they don't care, then why should you? I personally don't give a shit if they care about me. they don't know me. I don't know them. I'm there for the music, not to be embraced by the band.

As much as this makes sense, I would not turn away their embrace if given the (natural) opportunity :no_mouth:
  • funny story, Friday night I was waiting in line to get in the park. Along comes a bunch of cops on motorcycles parting the crowd like the red sea, along comes 2 Mercedes vans. I recognized Ed's wife in the front. So I stepped close toward the vans knowing the band was in there and I yelled out something like "what the fuck, who do you think you are"?? with my arms in the air - everyone in the van were laughing. Pretty cool moment.

Leaving show Friday we were stopped by police from crossing the street. just as those same 2 vans with police motorcycle escort came by I starting waving as they were right in front of us, my wife asked why I was waving, I said that's the band lol, she was like "really ?", oblivious to it all lol, they really got them out of the park and area fast like a military operation

I assumed the House of Blues thing was as advertised...anyone who thought different had wishful thinking. The band goes above and beyond within anything they do, no one should be disappointed they didn't make a special appearance at that event. They are in Boston likely for only 4 days tops, and they do have families to be with

I was reading the new RS interview with McCartney today and he was talking about the lack of privacy in The Beatles days. He said if people came up to them when they were eating and asked for something they'd say no. If the person said "but I buy your records" then they would say stop buying them because it's not worth trading our privacy.

My take away from that is that outside of performing a concert we pay for they owe us nothing extra and we shouldn't expect anything extra. Often they go above and beyond and I consider that a bonus.
This show, another show, a show here and a show there.

totally. I hate the "well we made them rich" mentality. we don't own a piece of them because we bought their records that WE ENJOY. we aren't doing them a favour. I'm not a musical philanthropist.

I read this thread at its infancy, and haven't been on the board in a few days. I see next to the thread 90 new replies. My first thought....."damn, PJ was all over town for so many people to have bumped into them!"
Then I read the 90 new replies. Not so much, lol.

Yes, I certainly was suggesting a lot for thinking they may have wanted to donate 30 minutes of their time. I will keep that silliness to myself going forward. They are like any other retailer selling $5 shirts for $35.

No, they are like any other retailer promising a film screening and q&a with the director and then delivering a film screening and q&a with the director.

And I didn't expect anything different and posted so several times. But based on most of the comments in this thread it seems that the average superfan (posting in this forum) views them as corporate CEO's of a retailer.

Exactly, although if bootlegger paid $35 for his HOB tix, maybe we shouldn't tell him they also gave the tix away for free? Imagine the gall of PJ, delivering exactly what they said they would and doing it for FREE!
