Maybe not the most amazing voice ever but an unique one : Betty Bonifassi. She can go in different style so easily. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qgd6fFNr6ak (bad video but the music is good)
As usual with good threads, I had certain people in mind when I read the title, then read through and added a whole other long list to my original list! Interesting also that this list doesn't completely correspond with my top favorite artists ever... I'd never have the Clash or Rage Against the Machine on my best vocalist list, but they're definitely on my favorite bands ever list.
But if I'm really limiting it to the 10 or so most "WOW" voices I can think of off the bat, it would be these:
Jeff Buckley Billie Holiday Cassandra Wilson (check out album Blue Light Til Dawn) Mahalia Jackson (yes, astounding voice!) Sam Cooke Thom Yorke Glen Hansard Michael Stipe Eddie Vedder And even though I almost never see anyone talk about this guy here, his voice is astounding: Hozier - check out this acoustic video
I was just telling a friend about Hozier tonight~~swoon~~ lol, jk
He IS amazing!! I just heard From Eden for the first time a couple weeks ago~~dude's got skills and SOUL...hard to believe he's only 26!! I know he's Irish, but its the way he forms his words when he sings that is so unique....and his lyrics kick ass! Only other ones I know of his are Someone New and Take Me to Church--great songs.
Your top 10 list is amazing, JH6056. There's 2 I've never heard of--will have to check them out.
Cool, which 2 had you not heard of?
Honey, don't even get me started on Hozier! I can gush about him waaaaay too long... inappropriately long! If you can find either his Bonnaroo 2015 set or Glastonbury, you'll get a good idea of what else he's capable of.
This here though, it's my favorite song of his if I had to pick one (Arsonists Lullabye)... slow start, but powerful and lyrics amazing, like all his lyrics. Literally, they're all either good, great, or mind-fucking-blown great...
Holy hell!--Great song and passionate performance. Hozier is now on my long list of ones to see live. I did catch him live actually when he was on SNL--already knew Take Me to Church at that point--thanks to radio kill (and my husband was obsessed with that song for awhile) I wasn't familiar with the other, Angel of Small Death and the Codeine Scene--will have to go back and look at that one. He can slither from Eden to sit outside my door any day
The 2 I don't know are Cassandra Wilson and Mahalia Jackson--will definitely check em out.

Cassandra Wilson is amazing, nouveau jazz/soul singer, and Blue Light 'Til Dawn (with 2 Robert Johnson covers on it) is my fave album of hers. Her version of Van Morrison's Tupelo Honey is amazing.
Mahalia Jackson is gospel, and really old school gospel. Here's one of my favorite songs by her, she's a historic figure from back when music was simpler.

I can never do a "best" or "favorite" answer, sorry! "Amazing" is subjective to one's ears of course. For whatever reason, several of my favorites are voices of singers who are generally (sometimes even at best) not regarded as good singers:
J Mascis (my number one pick)
Runners up (I can never do a "best" or "favorite" answer, sorry!) Jimi Hendrix (love his voice, he hated it) Neil Young (of course!) Paul Westerberg Joey Ramone Colin Newman (of Wire) Lou Reed Bob Dylan Willie Nelson
And some who are generally well recognized as good to great singers: Eddie Vedder Michael Stipe Jim Morrison Sandy Denny Natalie Merchant
All of the above amaze me.
“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man [or woman] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.”
I've scoured through this thread and I've not seen his name mentioned as yet. He may not have an amazing voice but to me he certainly has one of the most unique ones in rock music.......
*We CAN bomb the World to pieces, but we CAN'T bomb it into PEACE*...Michael Franti
*MUSIC IS the expression of EMOTION.....and that POLITICS IS merely the DECOY of PERCEPTION*
.....song_Music & Politics....Michael Franti
*The scientists of today think deeply instead of clearly. One must be sane to think clearly, but one can think deeply and be quite INSANE*....Nikola Tesla(a man who shaped our world of electricity with his futuristic inventions)

Layne, Cornell ( I think his voice is getting better, I am not sure) Weiland,(His voice went through too many changes but I really liked the Tiny Music, #4, Shang ri tours) Vedder, (91-94, 98-03, 05-06 & 2009-2010 are my favorites) Ozzy (Sabbath years & No More Tears tour) David Gilmoure,(Always) & Roger Waters (Animals/The Wall era), Phil Anselmo (CFH-Southern Trendkill years) Otis Redding, Bon Scott, Brian Johnson (Razors Edge-Ballbreaker tours) Axl Rose (Use Your Illusion tour and this current tour he sounds great), Curtis Mayfield, Al Green, Brandon Boyd (Early Incubus until about `03) Bradley Nowell Maynard James Keenan (Opiate through Laterallus as well as his APC work until `04 was flawless live) Dave Mustaine (In the 90s) James Hetfield (Justice 4 all - 1993) Andre 3000 & Big Boi as well as Pimp C and Ice Cube....Coolest hip hop voices... Talking Heads (I like the melodies from all the members together)
SO many great choices. Most of mine have been listed here....Mrs FMe's favorites may not get equal spin...but they do play a lot. Over the years I gained a lot of love for the voice of Amy Lee due to this influence. Other songs may showcase it better, but this is my favorite as it does rock some.

I have heard nothing but good things about Patton. I have lost track of him over the years but I always heard his name.
Can someone introduce me to some newer Patton material please!
