there are bands that know how to plan and pull off these mexico weekends that are enjoyable for the band and fans. tool is not one of them. saw this coming a mile away. love tool, would not have considered this trip for a millisecond

That's not my dream two sets-I'd pepper them with goodies I haven't heard before. But all those save Eulogy and Lateralus have been in the set consistently since FI got released and I reckon that would be pretty reasonable to expect something similar. Given this is an audience of die hands I'd throw in Eulogy as the holy shit moment and end with Lateralus given it's a signature song. Shame that the sets didn't get close to what people were hoping/expecting.

I’m a drummer. DC is my favorite drummer. Why is CCT still being played? They don’t even have to pull out rarities to fulfill a no repeat 2 shows. Ridiculous but not surprised.
Yeah Danny is my favourite too but would much rather see another song than watch him exhibit 10 minutes of drum wank. Because the songs have enough wank in them to keep the drummers interested.
Junior just posted on Fourtheye and said the promoter tagged on the two unique sets part without the band knowing. So while I still reckon it was a missed opportunity the promoter cops a part of the blame here.

Promoter or not. They should WANT to play 2 diff sets for people willing to spend the money and attend. It’s literally 20 songs. Ridiculous lol.

Reason I don't need to see simultaneous tours and/or back to back shows.
Considering they changed the wording about 2 unique setlists some time ago (at least from what I read), it had crossed my mind that the comment Maynard made during N2 might have been more a jab at the promoters than the audience, but the timing couldn't have been any worse. They had that crowd in the palm of their hands before they even took the stage and drove that train right off the tracks. They f'ed that up something fierce (not that they care).
RE: Chocolate Chip Trip - yeah, enough already. They've been playing that (or at least some version of it) for going on at least 10 years... give it a rest, especially in a 90 minute set.

Lol exactly. Promoter was trying to save them from themselves I guess. "They shouldn't have led you to believe we wouldn't repeat songs because we were definitely planning to do that." Oh well then my apologies.
Where did it even say two unique sets. The only thing like that I saw was about Primus because of their drummer situation. I never say anything about unique sets. Just an “all inclusive” festival.
It said it on promo stuff for a while. I spoke to my buddy who said it was amazing. he said the only real disappointment was MJK cutting night 2 short.
"every society honours its live conformists and its dead troublemakers"
Pulled this from Reddit, (& matches my recollection of the announcement). Should people have inferred “no repeats”? Not really, but the unique designation was definitely there at first.
They announced “unique” sets. Not “no repeats” set, like Metallica has been doing for the last couple of years. Big difference
Pearl Jam has played unique set lists every show of there career. Doesn’t mean there aren’t some repeats every night.
that being said. Shitty that they cut night 2 short. Hopefully there were some fans that had a good time
Maynard's comment (which I think was more a jab at the promoters than the fans) about the set being a unique experience two songs into the show was at least poorly timed / executed... if that comment wasn't made right before playing 3 repeats, I'm not sure this blows up half as much as it does, but that's Maynard for you.
From people I know who were down there, it seems like it was a healthy mix of some who were annoyed and some who didn't care / still had a blast.
The no repeat songs for Metallica was definitely a different thing than Tool in the sand. No repeats for Metallica was a marketing thing to get people to buy tickets for both nights as Metallica was playing huge stadiums. Tool should have used common sense and not played any repeats because there was no turnover in the crowd from night 1 to night 2.

I totally agree with you that a "no repeat weekend" would have been incredible. If that what was promised, I probably would have splurged. Tool DID NOT promise no repeats. The only sin here that i can see is cutting night two short.
Narrative is changing. Common sense? They were on course to change 30-40 percent of the set from the first night. that's two unique sets (as promissed).
If No repeats was the deal breaker for forking out the cash? Make all the calls to promotors and hosts to confirm that that is the case. don't just hope for common sense.

True! Maynard loves irony!
He probably wasn't expecting that comment to ignite a shit storm.
Common sense in the fact that they had to know that repeating half the setlist from the first night was going to piss off a lot of the crowd there. I would have still had a good time.

Me too! And if you follow Tool, changing half the set on night 2 is big!
I’m starting to think that half of complainers aren’t Tool fans.
just people that can afford the trip and looking for something to bitch about.
I still don’t see any wrong doings, besides the shortened second night
Comments
They played three of the four nights with no repeats! 60 unique songs over 3 nights.
The food was amazing too!
I will say that the prices on these things have really ballooned over 10 years though.
