Pearl Jam Cancels 4/20 Raleigh, NC Concert in Opposition to HB2; Official Band Statement

  • I agree that the law is ignorant and dumb. Not opposed to the band canceling the show. But seriously, 3 days before. What kind of message does it send to the strangest tribe that has nonrefundable airfare/hotels/etc? Disappointed that this wasn't done a few weeks ago.

I understand the cancellation but am angry they did the same as Bruce and waited very last minute to cancel.

3 days is better than day of - at least gives you and others a proper chance to re-group.

Really feel for the travelling fans... especially those who are now losing money on flights, hotels, etc. This cancellation could've been done a couple weeks ago (maybe it doesn't make a difference to all travelers but maybe some)... instead the band waits until multiple other acts cancelled before pulling the trigger themselves?

    Not cool.

Wow. How about you consider your fans first? The fans who paid for non refundable airfare to watch you play. You are more than entitled to your opinions, but don't screw us over. Those of us who don't live in NC, nor who have anything to do with the political landscape there. You have really burned me. How about you make a stand at the show? No…? Fuck you.

Don't have an opinion - don't know how to feel, indifferent. Feel bad for traveling fans.

Agreed, but I respect the decision. They don't have the luxury of standing by and critiquing other decisions. They have to make a decision, and I respect it. This governor needs to be stood up to, this will get more attention than a mid-song rant by EV.

I hope they get acquainted with all other countries laws regarding discrimination before they play there again. Is South America leading the way? Mexico City? I don't know but the band must agree with every countries or states laws to play there now. That's fine..just keep it consistent.

This is so disappointing in many ways. My wife and I had tickets to this Wednesday night. I do not support this bill, I just live here, I had no opportunity to vote on it and did not even know about it until it was passed.

Why would Pearl Jam want to punish me, a long (LONG) time listener. And two days notice? This bill was passed weeks if not a month ago. These were the only tickets I tried for in the lottery so I will not be going to another concert.

This punishes the state of NC in no way, no one in government cares at all, it will change no minds. It punishes the venue, the workers at the venue, the hotels around the venue, and the fans the most of all. I can't bring myself to say screw you to the band because I love the music so much, but it hurts, I guarantee that.

Such a disappointment and so disappointed in band I have loved for well over 1/2 my life.

I'm glad they care and are taking a stand, but would have preferred if the reaction was to move forward and donate proceeds. I respect their decision, though.

I don't have a problem with the decision. It's the timing which is a complete slap in the face to the fans who planned to attend. Fuck this.
I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me.

Fucking play the show. Webcast it for free while protest vocally, release an EP for the cause, have people come up on stage informing about HB2, donate all the proceeds, have all the merch and posters signal your stance, organize a protest throughout the city.

There are so many ways to do it without choosing to use your fans as ammunition 2-3 days before the show.

This was bullshit when Bruce did it. And it's bullshit now. Worse than selling dog collars.

This doesn't bring about change at all. It just slaps fans in the face. The state doesn't care if a couple artists cancel their concert.

I understand making political statements, but this does nothing.

come on.. this changes nothing. use the stage to voice your disagreement, but don't screw your fans over days before the show.

This whole trip was centered around the show. Again, I understand why they canceled. I had this fear getting on that plane Saturday. Once I got on it I was committed, hotel and all.

How do we get refunds if we paid someone to use their card??
  • ZeldaZonkZeldaZonk Seattle Posts: 614

Fans shouldn't be punished for this. Play the show and turn into into a manifestation, donate money to the cause, invite people to talk about it on stage, release an EP of songs from the show with proceeds going to the cause or whatever.

I think this is the wrong thing to do - especially for PJ who knows they have a fanbase who travels (far) to see them.

I completely agree. I spent a lot of money to fly from Seattle to Hampton and Raleigh, now I find this out a few hours before the Hampton show. Wtf?

  • THIS IS PURE EFFING BULL PEARL JAM!!!!!!!!!!

THIS LAW AND HOW IT AFFECTS US AS FANS HAS NO BEARING ON THE CONCERT ITSELF!!!!!!!

The money can be refunded... But my FIRST TIME having pit tickets and that experience cannot be refunded!!!!!!

I am completely disgusted by this decision and with the Bands viewpoint on this matter!!

I am very very proud to live in my state of North Carolina!!

Feel bad for the fans travelling and losing money. It is a really important issue, and much bigger than a band playing a show, but with it being so close I feel the band could have protested in another way.

What does the conversation sound like when the controversy rages for more than a week before the band decides to cancel two days before the show? Seriously guys...Bruce's mistake was waiting too long. You could have done this better.
