this has been said before: moving out of state because you are broke makes zero sense. it is not a practical solution for most.
That seems to be the entire Republican philosophy.  If you don't like your state's
    • gun laws
    • abortion laws
    • minimum wage laws
    • health care laws
    • marijuana laws
just move to another state, problem solved!  As if 320 million people could just pick up and relocate to somewhere that suits them better.

We're really getting off topic here but I will say I don't totally disagree with unsung's libertarian philosophy.  I just don't see it working with with American's propensity to not be considerate and to bashing each other.  Libertarianism, from what I know of it, can only work well among cooperative people who are respectful of one another.

There is one place where this works, a place we could draw on as a good example...

Yes Brian, you are correct that it works in a fictional landscape.
OK, so I love in a fictional landscape.  John Lennon suggested being a dreamer.  Why not?

absolutely, libertarianism sounds great in theory. it's just not practical to the real world.

A min wage only handicaps the worker.

No min wage means the market sets the price.

McDonalds has employees working for min wage, whatever it is ($10 for sake of this discussion).
McDonalds is fulfilling their obligation to the wage rate set by government.  People are willing to work for that because they know that someone will take the job and McDonalds won't pay more for the same reason.

If no min wage existed McDonalds would be forced to pay what the market will bear.  If everyone stuck together for $12 then you'd get $12.

I would still prefer to eliminate the income tax instead of raising the min wage.  Govt wants min wage raised because it would mean more revenue for govt through more taxes taken.  I prefer a person keep what they earn.
even if there is a minimum wage, if all worker stuck together for $12 McDonald would have to pay that.  the reason for the minimum wage is that we know that there are very desperate people who will not stick to $12 an hour and we don't want them taken advantage of by big business.

again, minimum wage is a starting point it does not mean that McDonalds has to start at that rate.

No, namely because it requires private corporations to regulate themselves and make decisions that are good for society and not their bank accounts. Obviously that is the craziest fantasy of all time.

The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour. Congress hasn't raised it in 10 years.

I guess all of these places are going to have all of their businesses shut down, unemployment will enter double digits and everyone will end up on welfare?
