Respect not reverence? You called us “us commoners”. That’s reverential.

If you excuse people’s behaviour as a product of their time, what about the people in the same time that weren’t like them? I mean, not everyone agreed the “savages” needed to be tamed. How do you explain them? Time travellers?
Jeez, you completely miss that I’m simply acknowledging the existing social strata. That’s not reverence to me, but whatever at this point.

Has anyone else seen the new Real Canadian Superstore ad going right now? Not sure which provinces it's airing in. But it is a pretty standard heartfelt Canadian business ad, but the person narrating it is clearly Michael J Fox, without any attribution at all. It actually makes me tear up everytime I hear it, because of the amazing man's situation, and the fact that there is zero reference to him, even though he is narrating the ad, with his disabled voice, and that we know it's him anyway, is somehow very touching. Aw.
I noticed that a couple weeks ago and was touched like you were.

It was shortly followed by a Tim Horton’s ad with Kiefer Sutherland doing the voiceover, lol.

That said... it also wouldn't surprise me if he's just trolling liberal type people like an immature man child.
This is pretty much what I think, that he’s simply trolling us with the 51st State crap, initially because he hates Trudeau, and now he’s seen how it gets under so many of our skins.

As far as all the other chaos he’s created, I’m still trying to figure out the actual endgame is (as opposed to what the pundits claim, though that means consuming a variety of pundits among other sources, lol).

Next week I’ll be back up with my Trump and Musk loving aunt and uncle. It’s going to be interesting to see if and how their perspectives on them have changed. I’ll also be getting a healthy dose of Fox News, which is always amusing to watch, lol.

Seen it several times. I was actually disappointed that Fox did that (at first, but hey, everyone needs a paycheque). Loblaws is one of the companies that is price gouging the average consumer, claiming it’s all inflation while celebrating record profits. Now they’re jumping on the Canadian patriot bandwagon so they reap even more.

I have no idea how one correlates being a murderous tyrant with being homeless. That is one insane stretch.

I don’t judge the homeless cuz I have empathy.  You don’t judge them cuz they are a product of their time? No clue what you’re saying here.

Coming to the defence of residential schools. That’s a new one. Mass graves or not, the system was horrific and caused generational trauma. Full stop.

Getting all worked up about an outgoing political leader having a little fun on his last day, during a traditional act that is already kind of silly, is weird.

I wasn’t suggesting Diana was murdered. She was subject to a systematic smear campaign from the royal family which lead the insane media over there to act even more reckless than they usually are. Refusing to continue protecting her post-divorce was a catastrophe waiting to happen, and they knew it.

The PC’s were never progressive. It was a failure of a branding campaign. Two PM’s ago was a guy who thought women should be barefoot and pregnant.
This is a big part of why you and I can’t get along here, your habit of twisting my words, instead of maybe asking me to clarify myself.

A better example was perhaps that I try not to judge people on the other side of the planet (of all walks of life) who live a life and usually a belief system that I will likely never experience directly. We can agree to disagree about how we perceive the world, is probably the simplest way to put it.

If you think I was defending the residential schools then I suggest you reread my post. All I want is a full and accurate accounting of our history, yes, warts and all. For all we know Trudeau was kneeling over a bottle cap, and we won’t know until the archaeological dig begins (as far as I can recall governments have put money on the table for that purpose so I don’t understand the delay).

Regarding Trudeau, reread my post. Further proof of his disrespect for our institutions is his choice of footwear for the Throne Speech, some snazzy green and red/orange Adidas sneakers. But many if not most here will applaud him for it. I don’t think you can actually read anything I write accurately that includes his name because of your perception of my supposed obsession.

Thank you for elaborating about Diana, that’s certainly one way to look at it.

“The PCs were never progressive.” Ok, how does that bullshit stereotype square with your claim that you don’t hate the political right? It’s that sort of silliness that has me ready to just walk away from at least this thread, if not the board.

AMT could easily be subtitled “Never the twain shall meet”, it’s sad, really.
I don’t judge others from other walks of life either on the surface. I judge actions. That’s it.

I don’t “applaud” JT for any of these things. I just simply don’t get all bent out of shape about them.

Bullshit stereotype? It’s simply my opinion that the PC’s weren’t progressive. Honestly, I don’t care that much if you keep attempting to label me as hating anything. I know I don’t. I’m not the one raging at the shoe choices of a political leader. I wouldn’t care if PP did that. I likely wouldn’t notice. Or I’d realize that fashion trends and traditions can be shaped and morphed along with the times. Young adults wear suits with sneakers to big events all the time. Should women should still be wearing corsets? Sounds like the republicans when Obama wore a tan suit.

I stopped reading at “raging at the shoe choices”, that was another funny mischaracterization of what I said. If I had posted angrily about it on its own, sure, but all I did was mention it, for fuck’s sake.

But please, do lament how your party should have the “progressive” label again.

Why don’t you ask me how I define progressive conservatism?

Or you could make an actual case for your “regressive” smear.

This quote is defending residential school system as a “product if the time”:

“The revisionist history (we didn’t even have the word genocide until the 20th century, after the vast majority of colonialism had concluded) is more harmful than helpful since it doesn’t allow for any nuance or acceptance that it was a different world then, and often uses selective readings of the facts (look at the recent treatment of Henry Dundas).“

No one is stopping you from defining your version of it if you feel the need. I felt like I had a pretty good grasp of it, but have at er.
