Great show....thanks 10C for Row B center (4 rows back!!). Pretty much everything said here except how Eddie referred to people screaming things out as "like having the family dog dry-hump your leg when you are meeting the Dad for the first time of a girl you really, really like." It was really, really funny.
Additionally, about 25 of us hung out until 2 or so and met Ed at the loading docks to the parking garage. He came and shook hands with EVERYONE, sometimes twice, and went on his way. Unbelievable experience for me.
    Thanks Ed and 10C.

I waited before the show too. He never came out.

I needed to drive back home (south of Richmond) too. Because I waited until 2, my car was locked inside a parking garage. I was homeless in D.C. for 5 hours. I toured the monuments, watched rats run the sidewalks, and finally slept with one eye open on a bench. I woke up to a homeless man staring at me ( I think I had his bench or he was planning on killing/robbing me). I grabbed my purse/pillow and ran. I was finally back at my car at 7. All still worth the price of getting to meet Ed.

Please promise us not to do something like that again! I'm sure that someone there would have helped you out. If I had been smart enough to stay, I would have invited you to join our pajama party. I'm so glad you're safe!
  • Was there... 10th row center... great show... great songs.. great comments.. the one jerk who yelled "come on" and "stick to the music" was an ass, but overall didn't ruin my evening.

loved the joke about not endorsing any candidates.. and the guys walking with the Obama '08 banner behind him!! Go Obama!

Personal Fav: Porch.. always been 1 of my fav PJ songs..
Love Love Love: Throw your arms Around Me!

Have a CD with TYAAM where EV sings with Mark Seymour of the Australian band Hunters & Collectors who wrote the song.. and if you haven't heard that you're missing out!!! Their voices on that bring me to tears.

Anyone know if these shows with be recorded for sale, or put out on dvd/blu-ray.. even a compilation of all the nights or something...?

I was snooping around by the sound engineer...they were definitely recording audio the whole night. I asked him what they were planning on doing CD wise and he said he didn't know.

As for DVDs, Ed did say "tonight was being documented, so you'll have something to take home". He also said something about it being the only show?!? I couldn't really hear his exact words. If you go to http://www.trixiedvd.com you can check out Fugazi's drummer's film company. My guess is that it will be a compilation DVD of the two nights in DC. It looked very purposeful how he was fixing mistakes by doing parts of songs over, etc...must be for editing purposes?!?

Having given my two tickets to last night's show to my wife and son (as I was traveling out of town last night), I was awakened by a call from the Wife at 2:45 in the morning screaming in ecstasy. (No, not that type of ecstasy). She and my son had hung out and got to meet Eddie last night after the show (along with about 40 other people). When he came out, he was incredibly gracious, answered questions for about 20 mintes, and shook hands with everyone who stayed around. Even, personally gave my 13 year old son a guitar pick. (So, my son now has a guitar pick from Jack White and Eddie Vedder, not a bad combo.)

Called my wife this morning and she was still screaming with pleasure. (No, not that kind of pleasure). Said she hung out with some of the nicest people ever while standing around to meet Eddie and that last night was one of the greatest events she ever been to.

For those whose wives have had a similar experience, any idea on how long it takes for the euphoria to wear down? I'm a little scared to go home right now and see her in person. On the other hand, I did give her those tickets so, maybe she owes me something. (nudge, nudge, wink, wink)

wellll, as a wife... i would say the euphoria lasts quite awhile....
just be prepared to hear endless conversation about every ed detail.
and she probably does owe you something...
anyway, that's what my husband always argues :)

Your son got a pic too? Good for him! I saw Ed give one to a kid who was maybe 9 and then an older guy. It was funny, Ed asked your son "How old are you?", and then when he got to the 9 year old, it was "Now you're not 13", and he gave him and pic and said "I have these for 12 and under only", but he was just kidding b/c he gave another one to an older guy. It would have been funny if you were the father of the 9 year old, cause the 9 year old said at one point "Dad would have waited for 15 minutes and then been like 'Ok, he's not coming, lets go'". So funny. Totally worth waiting!! I had to work today too but lets see: how many days will I work in my life (lets go with infinate) and how many days will I have a VERY GOOD shot at meeting Ed (lets go with less than 2). Worth every minute standing and every minute of sleep lost (and being late to work, oops).

Shout out to the people waiting for Eddie last night! Def bunch of cool people. I'm jealous of the girl who got the hug ;) (if he was signing autographs and taking pictures, I would have totally just asked for a hug and thats it. worth so much more than a signature). A bunch of people were taking pictures and vid, anyone have any?

OH, btw, the concert was amazing, much better than saturday (HINT: PEOPLE SHUT UP! So annoying!), just because of the crowd Eddie always plays amazing :)

Just to blab some more... as I'm thinking about last night really for the first time... it's really surreal meeting Eddie. I mean, I don't know if I was really tired, and just in complete shock, but as it was happening, as Ed was having a conversation with us, it was like talking to a complete normal person. I mean, of course he's a completely normal person, but to me it was like he was one of us in the crowd. He was just a person. It was so cool. Just now I'm realizing how cool that was last night.

WOW.....row F Mike's side...i seriously was in a trance for much of the show jsut listening to Ed....he is fucking hilarious....and i just read a post about how Ed is so normal...man that is what i took from last night...it was like we were all jsut chilling with him and chatting....er..sometimes yelling out....

i definitely was a little buzzed up and yelled "shut up" to a few people who yelled out!!!...i'm glad that the ENTIRE crowd was all about only talking when appropriate and nailing people who yelled obnoxious shit.....

i watched a Pete Seeger "American Masters" on PBS a few nights ago and while watching it totally focused on learning about Seeger i thought that Eddie probably loves Seeger so maybe i would bring up his name....sooooo...

i had been waiting for a good spot and i spoke up when Eddie was turned looking at his setlist or at a guitar...anyway...i yelled "How about some Pete Seeger!?"

So Ed tells a story about Pete Seeger from what i remember...

"Pete's standing next to a Lincoln..no...a Limo....and Pete refuses to get into the limo....his manager comes over to him and tells him just to get in the limo...Pete refuses....his manager tells him that the limo driver has a job to do like everyone else and pleads with him to just get in the limo....Pete still refused.." Ed then chuckled i think and added, "he never did get in..."

then he palyed the Banjo for "if you want to sing out sing out"....

hahaha...i felt like i had some influence over Ed for choosing the Pete Seegeresque banjo to play it!

just a completely awesome experience....unforgettable night.....

by the way...some of the the greatest things form last night were Ed's facial expressions...haha..like when he hit the spot he had fucked up in Society...and also when we were all bird calling...his face was fucking hilarious....anyway..those are the current random thought....
"To be the man, you gotta beat the man! WOOOOOOOOO!!"
  • I was one of the lucky people to meet Eddie last night after the show. I just missed him talk to people Saturday afternoon by a few minutes so I waited all day Saturday afternoon and until 3 o'clock in the morning Sat night when we finally realized Ed left in the third van. I stood in the back waiting for him with about 30 people from 12 o'clock to 7 on Sunday. Around 5 the crowd weeded out to about 15 people, so me and some other fans waiting all day try to send a note back to Eddie that there was only 15 of us left. We tried to give it to so many people walking in and out of the back entrance including the photographers, bodyguards, caterers, stage people, security. We became good friends with all of the security people. No one would take it though. We were so trying to lobby our way back because we were told that Eddie was coming out and he didn't.

That was until Eddie graciously came out at around 2 o'clock. So after waiting for 15 hours over two days, I finally met Ed for the first time in 17 years of shows. He was so insightful to listen to that I found myself as did the other 20 something people there in a trance listening to his truthful words on politics, life, humanity.

I video taped a few minutes of him talking to us to only show how close I was to him to my wife. The part that I video taped wasn't really the best of what he was saying. So my wife asked me to sum up what he was telling us, and this is when it hit me. I really can't sum up what he was saying to us because it was so deep, truthful, raw, and sincere that the the inspiration of the moment was insurmountable to the actual conversation he was having with us. Each one of us who stood there walked away with more than just an experience, but a calling to reflect on our own lives, our world, humanity, and the actions each of us should take. The experience of listening to Eddie was about as down to earth as you can get, but at the same time have such a higher meaning to it when reflecting back on it. The funny thing is that Eddie just wanted to have a conversation with us yet reached all of us at a deeper level that he doesn't even know or was even intending on doing.

Truly amazing! Thanks Eddie for continuously pushing yourself to search for the truth and not settling and inspiring all of us to do just the same.

Hopper, good call with Pete Seeger!! Thats when yelling out things makes the show interesting!! It was a cool story too. :)

More reflections about meeting Ed (just for the hell of it):
Watching Ed go around the crowd shaking everyones hand and making sure to look at everyone's face... it was awesome, he is such a caring guy. Two things that stick out from the crowd though, there was the one guy I mentioned got a pic, an older guy... he looked straight out of 1992, but anyway, he had maybe a troubled or tough look (not to call this guy out, this is just my perception)... when Eddie shook his hand and gave him the pic, he had such a deep look a gratitude, like Ed had given him a house or something. It was just so cool, to see how Ed can impact someone so deeply. Also, the girl he gave a hug (it was her birthday), the boyfriend (or maybe brother, sorry)was so grateful, just so happy for her.... it's just crazy the impact Ed has on people, how much they admire him, and how much he gives back. Its truly amazing.

  • I don't post on here often, but figured I'd offer some memories from the weekend.

Basically, after seeing both DC shows, I'm still buzzing. I have a couple pictures of Eddie greeting fans long after the show ended, but I don't want to post them if its not cool. The sign posted on the front door was essentially a waiver claiming everything was being recorded and anyone in attendance would be documented.

The first night was longer and there were more jokes based on the number of idiots screaming out and Eddie's responses. The second night was a little shorter but just as fun, especially with Brendan Canty sitting in on drums.

Eddie arrived Sunday and went into the venue bypassing fans. I put my ear to the door and heard him rehearsing the song he played over the PA during Saturday night's gig by those little kids from the military family. It sounded like he was playing with them and a woman told me he was reshooting footage or something.

Brendan Canty left around 1:00 AM that night after the second gig and came back, then left the loading dock short before 2 AM with Ian MacKaye in the passenger seat. Ian had this chill fedora hat on and lifted it up off his head slightly in a nod to those who were clapping and recognized him. I thought George Webb was Eddie's tech and I saw him come out. I asked if he was George Webb and he blew past responding with "No."

When Eddie came out as it was mentioned, people formed a semi-circle around him and he talked for a little over 10 minutes. He talked about Obama, hope, and offered some insight into the power of huge media corporations and what their motives are. He said he had seen something after the primaries that had the poll with Obama at 46% and McCain 44%. He said he didn't believe it, like it couldn't be that close. He mentioned the "Obama Nation" book and how its a repeat of the Swift Boat campaign that attacked John Kerry, but that he wasn't entirely sure how to combat it, and that nowadays its important to immediately call "Bullshit!" on something the second it comes out.

During Sunday's show a fan screamed out "Let's go!!" during the introductory political speech to Blackbird. Eddie told him off and later outside after the gig he mentioned it and thanked us for backing him up after he told the guy in the crowd "If you came here not expecting that... what the fuck were you thinking??"

Outside he also mentioned "the film" but wasn't specific about it.

He mentioned Diebold machines and working at a gas station and that they were among the first machines to accept credit card payments years ago and that they fucked up "all the time," and how they now count votes. He spoke of Chris Novoselic and how he was "really in the trenches" fighting for people's best interests. He then said thank you, shook everyone's hand and hopped back into the van. Liam Finn was snapping his own pictures of the crowd during all of this. We spotted him and cheered in appreciation as he waved back.

Since it was late at night, lots of street-sweepers and other engines were running and breezing past so at times it was hard to hear what Eddie was saying. He'd be in the middle of a thought and then get drowned out. If you were closest to him I'm sure it was much easier to hear.

Overall, it was such an amazing experience. Both nights. I really hope something sees the light of day in the future.

No but I'm assuming that it's close to a pisco sour.

Pretty awesome show. A little different for me since I always sit in the grass and dance and party. This was something else though. It was just amazing... the most authentic thing I've ever witnessed. Ed is just an amazing artist, and an amazing person. You can't be in a theater like that with Eddie Vedder and not feel like you are part of something special.

I love all of the music... can't really pick a favorite but the song that has been in my had is "If you wanna sing out, sing out." Great night. Liam Finn was pretty amazing as well. Not what I was expecting but he really rocked.

BTW... is it cool to post video's on youtube? I have some really good ones.

It would have been funny if you were the father of the 9 year old, cause the 9 year old said at one point "Dad would have waited for 15 minutes and then been like 'Ok, he's not coming, lets go'". So funny.

Saw your quote and immediately knew it WAS my son who would have said that after the show. So, got home tonight and totally busted him on it.

After I get home from the airport, I let my son talk about the show a bit and then I tell him: "Hey, I heard another quote from the show last night."

He asked me "What?" and I gave him the quote:

"If my dad was here, he would have waited 15 minutes and said 'okay, he's not coming, lets go'".

My son just stood there with that "deer in the headlights" look and said: "How'd you hear that? Who told you?!"

As a parent, you just live for moments when you can bust your kids like that! Thanks, OceansJenny! I owe you.

I had waited for 3 hours before the show on Sunday and unfortunately didn't get to see Ed. After the show, my friend and I walked around DC enjoying the quiet streets...walked to the White House, the Executive Building, etc. On our way back, we decided to check back at the garage area and there was a group of people waiting. Boy, were we all spoiled! Ed was amazing, as always. I was the very lucky girl who got the birthday hug! All I wanted was a handshake and to tell him he was an inspiration. My friend was the one who told him it was my birthday, and I love him for that! Thank you, Brian!

Having gone to night one I thought the crowd was much better behaved on night 2. There were still some really annoying people but night one was just that bad with the screamers. I can't believe the one asshole that screamed "get on with it" during Ed's talk about civil rights. Ed proptly put him in his place, but that was still just so disrespectful. It was good to hear him address the people that just want him to shut up and sing by saying "how could you come to this show and not expect a little dose of this". I was surpsied that the setlist was pretty varied from the first night besides the ITW songs. The concert did feel shorter, and Ed was probably a little less chatty than night one, but the crowd reactions to the songs were much more positive in night 2 and Ed was really appreciative of it. The biggest difference was during No More. On the first night it didn't seem like anyone was singing along. On Night 2 everyone was singing along and Ed didn't even have to motion for us to do it. The song kept building and building and the energy carried through the rest of the show. This weekend was definately a great experience that I'll never forget.

And congrats to those who got to meet Ed after the show. I stayed for a while on Sat night but had to drive 4 hours home on Sunday night and couldn't stick around. I should have just quit my job and stuck around.

  • a few thank you's and a few fuck you's

    thank you:
10 club! when my friend and i picked up our tickets, they said BB. we figured this meant row 28 (a-z, aa, bb), and we were ok with that. but then, when we got into the venue to take our seats, we found out they were SECOND ROW, DEAD CENTER! ahhhhhhh it was glorious.

    fuck you:
person who kept yelling "hey eddie, its my birthday!" how old did you turn, 12? get over yourself. did you expect eddie to put down his guitar and bake you a cake? uggh.

    thank you:
eddie! this was my only solo show of the tour, and it was even better than i expected! i could sit here and type every song and how great it was, but i'll just leave it to a few. man of the hour hit me hard. it was stunning. so was guaranteed. you really nailed the fingerpicking. also, the second encore was ROCK. ok, im getting into every song. i need to stop.

    fuck you:
person who kept yelling "play gone!" you may be the same person as birthday boy. if so, please stop going to shows. when you said it once, i thought "gone would be cool to see." when you yelled it a tenth time, i wanted to drown you in the river.

    thank you:
liam finn! you're opening set was awesome. i heard good things, but you really surprised me with your awesomeness. you beat the poop out of your drums. i enjoyed watching it.

    thank you:
person next to me! you gave your extra liam finn cd! i listened to it on the drive home after the show. i really appreciate it!

    thank you:
crowd! sure, some of you were assholes who yelled outlandish requests and idiotic statements between songs, but when ed played, you were very quiet and repsectful. there was not a lot of picture taking or cell phone usage, which was great

i also wanna send thanks to brad klausen for the sweet poster and the camera crew for recording the show. it was a great time

lol Eddie baking a birthday cake on stage. Do you think he would do a good Swedish chef impersonation? Do you think people would sit still to watch Eddie bake a cake? I probably would. Good post. :)

    I'd say that's a pretty good assumption.
  • I like the thank you fuck you format, so I'm going to ape it a little

    Thank you:
Lauren, Megan, and all of the other cool people that I met before, during, or after the shows throughout the weekend. Ed for wearing a Frank Zappa shirt.

    Fuck you:
The asshole before "Blackbird" on night 2 and the cadre of assholes from night one. I'd say you're allowed to have your opinions, but fuck you anyway to the Boo-ers after the Obama sign.

Amazing amazing shows. Such a different vibe than the huge PJ shows, and far and away the best opener that I have seen for ANY concert I have ever been to. Half the fun of my drive home was excitement to research and entrench myself in some Liam Finn music.

    See you guys next tour.
