That album is amazing! King Kunta sounds like a beat from DJ Quik though (read that they sampled one of his songs on it) but I still love it!

The Blacker The Berry is one of the best songs I've heard ever. Seriously. This guy is the real deal. I'm not a huge hip hop fan, and only started listening to him lately, but he is freaking unbelievable!

Remembering I posted in here a while ago....

Was lucky enough to catch Kendrick this past Monday. I was FLOORED. The man's meant to be on stage, entertaining people, and sharing his gift. Couldn't have had a better time. Super cool he had a guitarist, bass player, and drummer live with him. Totally added more to it. Rhythm section especially were very impressive.

Let me tell you--a room full of (mostly) young people singing things like 'I love myself' and "We gon' be alright,' while also listening intently to songs like Blacker the Berry was something I won't soon forget.

He's clearly not for everyone, but at least be aware that you're giving a surface listen/view to it and the storytelling is way way deeper and more complex than your takeaway. You don't have to like it, and you don't even have to delve deeper. Just understand that at the level you've listened/looked, you're not even getting a fraction of what he's saying and doing.

And it's also interesting to see how people can watch the exact same single performance (like the Grammys) and have such vastly different impressions of what it meant, what the message was, what was or wasn't groundbreaking and incredible (or not incredible) about it..... It clearly all starts with what you've been exposed to and how you see the world before you ever watch the performance. Like most things, the perspective that you start from totally influences what you do and don't take away from it.

Same can be said for Lady Gaga's Bowie performance. I saw raves on many of the online entertainment sites, but the Bowie-aholics I know on facebook shredded it and tore it up. Most agreed she seemed to be making a sincere effort, but no, it didn't work at all. It mostly boiled down to casual Bowie fan vs. intense Bowie fan, and very few major fans were impressed.

Kendrick Lamar is exceptionally talented IMHO and for those of us steeped in hip hop (beyond "rap flavor of the month" back in the day), he's groundbreaking and amazing in how he tells his stories and the overall tapestry he wove with "To Pimp A Butterfly". But it's ok that some people will watch his Grammy performance and say "Eh, meh, ok he doesn't like "The Man", what is the big deal?" I might ask the same question of many of the other artists I saw on the Grammys. Like I'm starting to like Adele, but if all I'd really seen was her Grammy performance, I'd think "Wow, seriously, what IS the big deal? That was so mediocre!" But she's a lot more than that one performance.

I am not at all a fan of rap (I kind of hate it for the most part - very few exceptions), but I did really like that Grammy performance - cool combination of musical styles; very artistic and creative. Hadn't even heard of him before that - I am clueless when it comes to this genre.

I think his performance on ACL is a better show of his talent. He knocked it out of the park on Grammys but the sound was terrible. ACL is a nice clean and crisp recording in a great environment.

I think it also gives a better portrayal of the breadth and depth to his music. TPAB is an honest portrayal of life as a black man in 2015/1016 America. His reality is growing up in Compton with gang activity around him, as well as being marginalized by "the man" (still lol) and institutional racism. And TPAB is as progressive of a hip hop album as you are going to see outside of a Kanye album. its a touchstone album for the genre.

but for the most part, if you don't like hip hop, its not really meant for you.

Incredible album based on lived experiences, told in a provocative, progressive, captivating, and honest way.

Because if you enjoy hip hop, you'll get it immediately. If you don't enjoy hip hop, its not as obvious and takes work. Or to put it a different way, its probably not the album to pull you in the genre. I mean if you can, great, But if you look at like "hes angry at the man", then its not for you.
