I'm sure this would have been common during the mid-to-late 1700's. Why wouldn't you approve of such activities in today's day and age?

it takes years to teach & learn gun safety. is the kid mature? does he/she listen to instruction? does the kid have respect for himself, his parents, the game being hunted & so on. the kids of 1700's are 470Xs more skilled & hard working than the kids of the 2000s are. in the 1700s a kid was another two hands with a strong back to help the family unit or be a useless shit & upset the parents.

some kids today could be raised like this. many would rupture like a duck & beg for their play station IV or xbox & expect mom & dad to do it all.

i had a shotgun at 11 but i sure as hell didn't go hunting on my own or sneak out w/ my younger brothers. when i was taken hunting at 11 i sure as shit did not carry a loaded shotgun, the shells were in my pocket. from one fall & winter hunting season to the next fall & winter hunting season thing progressed if i was a good student & i was so taadaa here i am

Chadwick, I know you take what you're doing with a gun incredibly seriously, and understand that you can't fuck around with it. Hearing your passion, I can honestly say that if I were out with you and you had a gun on you - I would not feel endangered. That being said, having recognized the modern societal flaws you brought up and knowing that I'm subject to them in my own upbringing, I personally wouldn't trust myself (let alone anyone else) using one. When I started taking driving lessons, my instructor gave me a great rule of thumb: even if you have the utmost confidence in your driving, you have to assume everyone else on the road is an idiot, and often, if you are basing your judgment of a person on their driving skills, you will be right. I apply this to driving and tread with caution only because it's a means to an end (i.e. getting to work, travelling, etc.). With a gun, I don't consider it a necessary evil within society so I couldn't find it within myself endorse the dissemination of them.

So if the social mores about gun use & ownership have changed since the 1700's; why shouldn't the respective laws evolve to keep up with the times?

    hey i don't have all the answers & i just drank half a 5th ofseagrams 7. ok i lied. i had about 3 or 4 shots in 7up.

alot of people are stupid as shit with a marker or a phone or a tack or a mouse for the computer or a roll of scotch tape or a notepad or a bic lighter or a circular saw. many of these assholes will not ever be safe with a firearm. i would not ever go with them to target practice or hunting. by the way, i don't hunt anymore & haven't in well over 20 years.

but i did start learning (from dad & his dad) how to fish & hunt before i could form entire sentences. did i carry a gun at 4 yrs old? no. i walked along holding dad's hand. did i bait my own hook at the trout stream? probably so.

Insulting to you. It makes you look childish.

We've had one president since GWB was 'elected'. That's not an opinion, that's a fact. He was even re-elected! I've come to terms with the Supreme Court's mistake re: Bush, you should acknowledge Obama's 2 successful elections. Both of which were determined by a populous of the electoral college and popular vote. Handily I might add.

And no, I'm not advocating Communism. In fact, I consider myself to have a Libertarian streak more than anything else. However, government does have a place in our society. For example, I prefer Keynesian economics to the repeatedly dis-proven 'trickle-down' economics. Government is but one tool among many in our society's toolbox. You have to pick the right tool for the job. You don't use a saw to hammer in a nail.

If you're going to throw around words like 'opinion' and 'communism', you should probably know what they mean before you use them....

You talk about why you should own a gun, get to carry it with you everyday, because it makes you feel safer. But when you're faced with numbers and facts that prove otherwise, all of a sudden it's a matter of 'opinion' or 'differing views'. Bullshit. The fact of the matter is: more guns create more gun deaths. That is not a matter opinion, it's a fact.
I'm sorry for your anger but the fact that people kill each other everyday is no fault of a responsible gun owner...no bullshit really...it's true.
and if your going throw around your opinion maybe you should the reason I would disagree.

Godfather... I have to agree with CM. Could you try and rewrite that sentence please? I didn't really understand it based on how it was written. Also, it probably would've taken you an equal amount of time to re-write that as to post that you're at work and trying to hurry.

PS, I should add, we all have varying levels of competencies within the English language, and I think we all need to be sensitive to that.

According to the 2008 National Survey on Drug Use and Health3, in the US there were 8.3m adults who had serious thoughts of committing suicide, and 2.3m who had actually made plans to commit to suicide. Of those, 1.1m actually attempted suicide, but only just over 33,000 succeeded. Which would make the ratio of failure to success 33 to 1.

    Damn those clever Harvard liberals!!!

Across states, more guns = more suicide
"people in states with many guns have elevated rates of suicide, particularly firearm suicide"

"States with higher levels of household gun ownership had higher rates of firearm suicide and overall suicide"

"Changes in the levels of household firearm gun ownership was significantly associated with changes in both firearm suicide and overall suicide....There was no relationship between changes in gun ownership and changes in non-firearm suicide"

"case fatality rates ranged from over 90% for firearms to under 5% for drug overdoses, cutting and piercing"

My point was to not (necessarily, I should add) blame the gun for the suicide. Sure it completes the goal more than any other means - but it's still a means. I'd rather deal with the why's of suicide.

And yes, it'd be stupendous if guns weren't available to those contemplating the route of hurting themselves or others.

This thread is full of big government statists who actually believe that people don't know what's best for themselves and instead they need obama and his wife making food decisions for them. She pushes a diet heavy in grains.

The level of stupidity is increasing here daily.

Any person that spends one minute researching food would know that the govt food pyramid is also pushed by lobbyists, heck the entire food industry is subsidized by the taxpayers.

I'll see you guys in a while, I'm taking a break from here, I can't deal with people who want others to control them.

Agree. Mostly. Government can control too much and the lobbyists aspect is sickening.

Now to say one bad thing in govt makes it all bad isn't true. It is evolving and Americans are getting wiser.

Excuse me for a while, I have letters to write to a Congressman and I must retain my senses and illustrate to that fool why his decisions are based in some far off fantasy world.
