You guys know I m very pro 2nd amendment and I have zero problems with people taking some sort of gun safety/education course before owning a gun. It s scary as shit being next to someone at the range or in the field that have zero idea on how to safely handle a firearm.

You feel this way in a controlled environment.
Imagine how us non-gun folks feel when people carry them around like candy in public.
Unless you live in a state where open carry is legal, the only people legally carrying guns have passed background checks, taken a class and proven their ability to safely carry a gun. I read a study that found that citizens with CCW permits are among the most law abiding people....more so than those in law enforcement.

Criminals carrying guns, on the other hand, are out there, too. The problem here is that criminals aren't going to follow the rules. They're not going to take a test or prove themselves responsible with firearms. So, we get to the argument that any new gun laws will only serve to punish law abiding gun owners.

This is exactly why many Pro 2A people don't want new laws. There is also fear that some types of laws would lead to a national gun registry and ultimately, confiscation.

As to the comparison of passing a gun safety test and a driving safety course, driving a car isn't a constitutionally protected right. Owning a gun is. This is the backbone of the Pro 2A side.
it doesn't hurt law abiding citizens. the laws would be put in place to punish those caught without a licence.

to me, the right to bear arms is a ridiculous right. it's not a basic human right, like freedom from discrimination or freedom of speech. you could put the "right to drive a car for the means to flee an oppressive government" in there and it would make as much sense to me as the right to bear arms.

a rule made by men under a completely different context hundreds of years ago is not an argument. in fact, it's quite the opposite. it's weak, as it shows there is no real reason for people to be able to own one other than the ammendment itself.

If only both sides followed Colorado by legalizing pot since it helped lower crime within a year. It would put an end to this petty bickering and cherry picking of the issue on BOTH sides. I'm all for Bernie Sanders but if there's one issue I disagree with him and socialists on, it's rewriting the constitution.

I've just read the constitution for the first time. I read it because I thought the constitution said only land owning men could vote. I did not find that part. Was that in another document or something?

I mean it says "a well regulated militia" blah blah "right to bear arms". So I mean. "regulated" is right in there. Don't really see the problem.

how did legalizing pot lower crime? because having it is no longer a crime? or non-pot related crimes went down?

Pot crimes. You wouldn't believe how many people used to go to jail for that which is funny because it used to be Cali enemy #1. Now it's #1 cash crop...

Fine. Let's just do nothing. Let's just sit back and watch it happen over and over again. Maybe this particular law wouldn't have prevented it but maybe the next one will. Or the one after that.

Exactly. Because it IS amendable slavery was abolished, women can vote and several other important enough issues were corrected.
What about the everyday generic crime? Think it mau help in that area? Or the rates of suicide? Suicide being the overwhelming majority of death caused be firearm? Think it will help that?

This is a problem for the pro 2A side. Some see this kind of action as the beginning of the end of personal gun rights. Legislation won't have the desired effect so there will be a push for more and more restrictions until eventually private ownership of guns will be banned.

IMO, the best way to reduce suicide rates is to be attentive to the people in your life. Be a friend and recognize the warning signs of severe depression. Help those who are in need of someone to talk to or attempt to facilitate professional help for those truly in need.

It's no secret that returning veterans have a very high probability of suicidal tendencies. Volunteer to help out at veterans groups. Laws are not likely to make people not want to kill themselves.

That's why I refuse to go to any ranges ever again. It's fucking scary. The last time I went there was a group of international college students who showed up. The guy's at the range rented them two Glock 9mm, gave them a two minute overview of how to load it and discharge it. That was it. It was very obvious none of them had ever touched a firearm prior to that moment. Watching them in the range spooked me so much, my friend and I packed up and left. I haven't went back in over a year. My friend cancelled his membership at that range, as that wasn't the first time we had seen that type of stuff happen there.

Being from a small town in northern Minnesota (a jackpine hillbilly), I grew up around firearms as my family are avid hunters. I still hunt and enjoy squeezing off a few rounds from time to time. I fully support people owning firearms for sport and home defense. I also totally and fully support expanding and tightening gun laws including: background checks, registration of any firearm with a capacity in excess of 6 rounds, mandatory training (and not the 4 hour bullshit class that will get you a CCW permit in MN), testing, limiting magazine capacities, limiting ammo purchases and possession, and heavy penalties for violating gun laws. I believe the NRA is a bunch of shit, especially their "good guy with a gun" line. Call me crazy, but that's my opinion.

I'm curious about this, too. It seems like there was a huge increase in ER visits due to people "overdosing" on THC, particularly in edible forms.

Police and Sheriff departments were scrambling to establish a field sobriety test for people driving under the influence of pot due to an increase in traffic accidents.

I don't care so much about legalized Marijuana. I'm not a smoker and I don't use drugs or alcohol.

It doesn't need rewritten. It says "well regulated" and that is all we are trying to achieve.

In our current political climate, this would be impossible. We can barely get our congresscritters to figure out how to keep the gov't funded.

Maybe not. I believe it was a story on one of the NPR shows. I don't have a link to the story.

Background checks and proficiency licensing are cool with me. Registration is a slippery slope and I don't think anything good could come of it.

    Just my opinion.

Also, if we start licensing, there would be no reasonable opposition to a national Right to Carry bill. Right? If everyone has to pass a safety and proficiency test, only qualified and responsible people would have guns. There would be no reason to be fearful of those who carry concealed guns anywhere in the country.

We could do away with "Gun Free Zones" too.

I understand the rationale, but I cannot get behind a right to carry bill. Lol I'm not saying you're wrong, if all gun owners were vetted and licensed I could understand the rationale, but I'm still like ".....no." cuz guns are scary
