ridiculous arguments, if a person wants to migrate to America then speaking English should be their first priority, try working with a person or group of people that can't speak English........it sucks ! but back to the original question, learning to read before gun ownership ? ...it kind of helps when your filling out the forms when buying a gun because as we all know a simple cash exchange when buying a gun just don't happen anymore Unless your buying off the black market. a guy I grew up with has a learning disability and couldn't read or write a word(still can't) but has a very successful flooring business and his wife dose all his paper work and tax's etc and he has an awesome gun collection he's legally collected, has a drivers lic.owns a nice home and basically has everything he needs or wants (he couldn't even spell his own name)
Godfather.
I don't think he should have a gun or a license.
why ? do you think not being able to read or write affects his judgment with a gun ?
Godfather.
You've already stated he has a mental disability, so that right there should disqualify him to own a gun. I'm not so sure I like people driving with those diabilities. One should be able to read and fill out his own forms to drive and own a gun.
In defense of GF he clearly stated his friend has a "learning disability". This doesn't mean that someone has a "mental disability ". Two different things.
Absolutely. MUCH different. If you don't think there is much difference between the two, sorry, you're just plain old wrong. And you need to educate yourself about learning disabilities.
Or you can read the link I posted. I didn't say they were the same. I said there was a link between them.
Statistics from the link:
•People with learning disabilities demonstrate the complete spectrum of mental health problems, with higher prevalence than found in those without learning disabilities (Source: Mental Health Nursing of Adults with Learning Disabilities
•The prevalence of dementia is much higher amongst older adults with learning disabilities compared to the general population (21.6% vs 5.7% aged 65+) (Source: Cooper, 1997a)
•People with Down's syndrome are at particularly high risk of developing dementia, with an age of onset 30-40 years younger than the general population (Source: Holland et al., 1998).
•Prevalence rates for schizophrenia in people with learning disabilities are approximately three times greater than for the general population (3% vs 1%) (Source: Doody et al., 1998)
•Reported prevalence rates for anxiety and depression amongst people with learning disabilities vary widely, but are generally reported to be at least as prevalent as the general population (Source: Stavrakaki, 1999), and higher amongst people with Down's syndrome (Source: Collacott et al., 1998)
•Challenging behaviours (aggression, destruction, self-injury and others) are shown by 10%-15% of people with learning disabilities, with age-specific prevalence peaking between ages 20 and 49 (Source: Emerson et al.,2001) (Sources taken from Key Highlights of Research Evidence on the Health of People with Learning [Intellectual] Disabilities
FYI - I'm learning disabled (in auditory learning). I also graduated university with a B.Eng. in Structural Engineering, for what it's worth. I've also suffered from depression. Are you listing these points to suggest that my learning disability should disqualify me from driving or carrying a weapon (not that I'd want to do the latter ever)?

Congratulations on your accomplishments, benjs. I was listing the points to be helpful. If you want to chew me out over it, go for it. Maybe then I'll learn my lesson.

A line should be drawn somewhere. Not saying where, but somewhere.
will myself to find a home, a home within myself we will find a way, we will find our place
Great, I haven't heard of anyone here being pro-gun-violence in term of unlawful use. Just different opinions as to how to go about lessening unlawful gun violence.

Must be nice to have the money for personal bodyguards.
There's a lot of nutty people out there.
Don't compare a celebrity's legitimate need for protection from them with the average Joe's paranoid need for an AR15 to protect themselves from the boogeyman.

Regardless, are you saying that celebrity rights should be extended beyond that average Joe? That's pretty elitist. Do the body guards having guns add an element of safety and protection to the celebrity or does the fact that they are carrying guns put that celebrity at more risk of harm? I can guarantee that nutty people don't only hang out around celebrities. More often than not, they are opportunists lurking around and scouting shopping malls. Oh the conundrums.

They have no more right to their self defense than what I do. I can't afford a bodyguard, and I'll also determine my own self defense needs thanksverymuch.

I heard Bloomberg spends over 2 million a year on ex-Mossad bodyguards for him and his clan. What is a man who only makes a quarter mill a year to do Bloomy? lmao

Bullshit, there are plenty of situations that an "average joe" may find themselves in that put them in just as or more significant or realistic threat as "celebrities". Otherwise, restraining orders would not exist. You said it yourself, there are nuts out there that come up with all kinds of reasons to harm others; divorces, child custody battles, money, drugs do not always bring out the best in people. "alien invasion"... Seriously?

those in the public eye are more susceptible to violence from those they don't know.

So are the elderly, the disabled, the poor...it's all relative. Does that mean a celebrity has more of a right to life than someone else? That's what this conversation is dwindling down to...

Does EVs body guards walk around with AR-15s?
What does that have to do with anything? I m sorry but if a politiciam/celebrity can have the most modern form of technology to protect them than I should be allowed the same to protect my wife and five kids.

Considering his views on the subject if they are armed it would make him quite the hypocrite.
I thought I read somewhere that they are armed... but how would that make him a hypocrite? I never heard that he didn't think security guards or the police shouldn't be armed. I would imagine that he, like most others, is a logical person who understands that certain jobs actually do justify being armed.

gun's will never leave the American landscape (thank goodness) if that ever happened we would be come a country of outlaws......then watch what happens, what's good for you may not be good for me but I'll be awfully angry if my rights to bare arms are taken away by some limp wristed political sissy, we should take a look at how many unregistered gun are estimated to be in America and how many registered guns are here as well, taking them away will never happen.

I was on this site at lunch last week and a colleague looked over my shoulder and saw the armed protestor at Landers' house. He was flabbergasted saying, "Where is that? Can they actually legally carry a gun like that? Can they actually legally own a gun like that? Wtf?"
I answered his questions. I told him they could buy a gun like that at the local sporting goods store. He just shook his head saying, "I knew they were a little f**ked, but not that f**ked. Holy shit."
