Also, you'll be staying right next to Ballpark village, which just opened recently, that will have resturants and bars to go to.... right next to Busch stadium.
If you're at the ballpark hilton, four hands could be reached on foot.A good walk but not unreasonable. Pappys is definitely worth the cab, ribs and brisket are tough to beat.

Crowds in St. Louis have always been great and respectful (less people yelling out song requests, etc.), and band has always seemed very relaxed and comfortable here. Some really solid shows over the years.
You should be okay walking back, but be alert and try to be with a group if possible. Like any metro area trouble can happen, especially the later it gets. You should look into a Metrolink pass. It'll make it a lot easier to get around, especially if you're here a couple of days.
Pappy's really is great. Heard great things about Bogarts too, so can't go wrong there either. I'd recommend the Soulard area too, near the Anheuser-Busch brewery. Great Irish pub there called McGurks, and many other restaurants and bars.

For the pastrami go to Bogart's in soulard, the pitmaster for Pappy's does double duty at Bogart's. Ballpark village isn't bad but... If you're staying downtown check out the different restaurants that David Bailey runs, ( http://baileysrestaurants.com/) as some other person said if you want Pizza go to my friend Chris' place Pi. ( http://www.restaurantpi.com/downtown-menu/) As you are wandering downtown make sure and stop by the city garden, ( http://www.citygardenstl.org/) and if you have time stop by the city museum, they say there is a fine line between genius and insanity, the city museum is what happened when Bob Cassilly tap danced on that line. ( www.citymuseum.org)
Mcgruff10- I'd say your good walking to ballpark area from Scott trade center. Police station is in between the two sites. St.louis is a dangerous place in some neighborhoods, but your away from most of that stuff downtown. Metrolink runs between to two spots, but it's only one stop away so it's quicker just to walk instead of waiting on train. Plenty of concert traffic around after the show so doubt you'll have the street to yourself.
I'll second the "must see" on the museum trip. It's a cool place. I know it's a good place to bump into my morning jacket when they are in town. I've always heard pi pizza is great, but never had the chance to get it. Many locals are crazy about imos pizza in st Lou, but I don't have to much love for it.
St. Louis pearl jam shows are usually pretty strong. Had a few great fox theater shows and last Scott trade show was damn good too. Crowds are usually more receptive at PJ shows than most other bands, the crowds are pretty laid back here in my opinion. Always assumed it was the traveling folks that pepped up the masses at Our st.louis shows.
Who ever makes the trip there is plenty to see, but it's always better with a show to cap off the night.
And for those who might be in town a day early or day late, the Fox theater (which is in this video and also where Eddie Vedder had his solo show) gives tours on Thursday and Saturday mornings. It's a beautiful place, one of my favorite venues.
And I can second the other recommendations. The Pastrami at Bogarts is really good and if your looking for a great burger, beef or something a little different check out Bailey's Range restaurant. It's also within walking distance if your downtown.
Also, The Fountain on Locust (another restaurant) is close to The City Museum when you go to that
And if your going to be exploring outside of Downtown and are in the mood for a great sandwich try Blues City Deli, it's a St Louis landmark !

The old rock house is a good club for a show, some national acts now a then. Pretty close to your hotel too. Off broadway also has good shows from time to time too. More folk alt country usually. Duck room is in basement of blueberry hill in the loop. Good times in that area if you find a band you like that evening. Lots to eats, bars, and a good record store too.
Ok I read some bad reviews on the hilton at the ball park so I just booked the drury plaza hotel at the arch. I never stayed at a drury...any good? Reviews were great.
I booked at the Pear Tree Inn at Union Station. Reviews looked pretty good on Priceline and was a free cancellation. Doesn't look too far from the arena.
In general, Drury has been fine for me. As an added bonus at most if not all Drury's . . . free hot breakfast and happy hour with food and alcohol included (2-3 drinks max).
As for Pear Tree, I think that it is affiliated with Drury, and that all of the above probably applies there as well. The location is pretty close to the venue too.

Pear Tree could be ok but is going to put you in a fairly dead part of town, preventing you from experiencing the better side of St. Louis without a cab because it isn't that close to the metrolink. If you're set on staying downtown, I'd suggest staying near Washington Ave., Busch Stadium or Scottrade itself.
However, If I was coming in from out of town, I'd likely stay in the Central West End (CWE) at the Parkway Hotel (Forest Park Ave. & Euclid) or Comfort Inn - Central West End (Lindell & Euclid). The Parkway is right next to the CWE metro station (Comfort Inn might be a 10 minute walk) which is only 3 stops from Scottrade. There are a ton of great restaurants and bars in this area. It is also only 2 metro stops away from The Loop district (opposite direction of Scottrade) if you want to check out that area (recommended). The CWE runs adjacent to Forest Park as well, which has the much-too-good-to-be-free-but-it-is Zoo and whatever else you might be looking for in an enormous city park.
I will say this though, if you stay somewhere and plan on taking the metro down to Scottrade (which I will be doing) pay attention to the Cardinals schedule. If they're going to be hosting a playoff game on 10/3, plan on getting on one of the earliest trains that works for you. This especially goes for the CWE stop since it is so close to Scottrade. The trains get packed on game days by the time they get that far into the city and it can be tough to squeeze on at times. Just keep this in mind.

thanks for all the info. Good stuff. Been to STL many times before and I love the city. Came up for the 2010 PJ show and stayed at the Sheraton across the street form the Scottrade center. I just grabbed the Pear Tree first since it was the cheapest and closest(and had free cancellation).
To each his own, just throwing it out there. A stay at the Parkway (free cancellation until 4pm same day) would give you a better location and overall weekend, with potential for saving $ on cab fare . I'll shut up now, it's beginning to sound as though I work for them. I just love the CWE.
