Just saw this thread. I have several newbury re releases but honestly I have been less than impressed. My talking heads both skip, my strokes is sorta blah and not impressive at all in sound. How do the rest of you fare with your newbury purchases? I just remembered that my spoon vinyl from them is the only one that plays through with no skips, so that one is good, but the rest are pretty lame.
I agree if it is an album I don't have yet and I've always wanted I jump at the option, but man, my fingers are always crossed with these guys.

I agree about The Strokes one. The sound was really muted/blah. So much so that I traded it in at the record store a couple of weeks ago.

I have Jeff Buckley 'Grace', Veruca Salt 'American Thighs', & Modest Mouse 'Good News...'. They all play thru just fine and sound great.
Right on. Well that's good then. I think my Buckley sounds fine too actually. I haven't lost hope but I definitely hold my breath when I order one from them now- honestly I think whenever I order vinyl at all maybe. Just paranoid. Nothing is annoying like the waiting, the opening/un packaging, the playing, and then the..... Awwwww shit, skipping!
Jeff Buckley- Grace (lilac swirl vinyl) John Coltrane- A Love Supreme (clear vinyl) Al Green- Greatest Hits (gold vinyl) Jimi Hendrix Experience- Axis: Bold As Love (orange 200 gram mono vinyl) Pearl Jam- Ten (coke clear vinyl) Phosphorescent- Muchacho (gold vinyl) The Strokes- Is This It (gold and blue vinyl)
Guys, pick this one up. If you haven't heard it you are gonna love. Really nice Garage rock pop. Dude can write a song. This album is top to bottom awesome.
Screaming Trees - Sweet Oblivion gold vinyl of 1000 up now.
I grabbed one. This album is awesome! Jesus though, the low Canadian dollar is killing me. This would have been a good deal, but with the conversion rate, it's fucking expensive. Nearly $48 CAD on $37 USD (including shipping).

What's people's experiences of Newbury vinyl releases? I have Wu Tang 36 Chambers (decent) and the Strokes Is This It (poor).
Was thinking about ordering the Jurassic 5 and Screaming Trees album but I'm unsure. Would rather buy the regular releases if the sound quality is better.
Any opinions on the sound quality of other Newbury releases would be appreciated.

There is nothing particularly special or bad about them sound-wise. Hit and miss just like every other place you buy vinyl. They are just appealing because 1) they are relatively cheap for what it is, 2) they are often numbered and limited, and 3) they are often nifty colours. As far as quality goes with the pressing, it's just fine (not sure where they're pressed, but I haven't had any issues with them so far as far as that goes. No flaws.). The problem with them is that a lot of the artists aren't providing high quality sources. That said, a regular reissue probably isn't going to sound any better, since they are likely the same recordings unless otherwise noted. I got the Strokes' This Is It from Newbury, and it sounded crappy and flat and were too quiet. But I got the two most recent Modest Mouse releases, and they sounded really good. It just depends on the artist. As for this particular Screaming Trees release - go for it if you like them, because the regular black reissue is more expensive that this numbered/limited one.

I have Veruca Salt - American Thighs, Jeff Buckley - Grace, Modest Mouse - Good News, and another one I'm forgetting at the moment, but they all sound great.

Not sure if I'll pull the trigger. My vinyl purchasing has been straight up embarrassing lately. I just can't say no.
Can't say no to this beauty!
