Oh and it looks like Simmons' show starts in a few weeks ...

Cliff--that might be the first time I've seen someone say "Joe Buck is awesome" and not mean it sarcastically.

I don't think outside me and a buddy of mine, I've seen where more than 2 people in on instance thought Joe Buck was alright. Fuck. This has got to mean Trump will be president.

What episode is that? I just checked the podcast list and don't see Buck there.

Two separate things. That wasn't clear. JP referenced the Obama and Buck articles. Keepin in 1600 is with the Obama speech writer who is one of the hosts on that podcast. It's really good, but Buck was not on it.
Yeah I heard that Obama speech writer on Simmons' podcast a while back and thought it was interesting. Maybe I'll check it out.
Yeah that was a pretty good one. You listen to the Michael rappaport one? Insane
Yeah that was good. I listen to most of his podcasts unless it's one about television shows.

I've been in a fantasy league called Joe Buck Sucks for about 8 years. I guess he's not the worst but I just find him annoyingly condescending all the time.

And God help us on that last part...

Pretty much what I've been saying for a while...

"The Phillies are still assembling the next version of the team. Right now, they’ve got a good center fielder, a good third baseman, three or four good starting pitchers, and a couple of decent relievers. That’s a start, but there are still a lot of holes.

Now consider this list of names: Tocci, Ortiz, Williams, Thompson, Alfaro, Knapp, Crawford, Kilome, Medina, Appel, Eshelman. They all stand to contribute to the big league club but have yet to play a regular-season game in the majors. Only a couple of years after the franchise hit rock bottom, the Phillies have a decent big league team right now, a top-five farm system, and the no. 1 pick in the draft next week. They also have an ownership group that’s been willing to spend almost all the way to the luxury tax in the past, along with only $24.5 million in payroll commitments past this year and just $2 million in commitments in 2018.

That combination of young talent and financial flexibility brings up one last question.

Will the Phillies be good soon?

For the first time in five years, the answer is yes."

I'm glad you posted this because I didn't realize The Ringer went live yet. Good stuff.
Def excited about the Ringer. There is a solid Joe Buck article up as well. Met him years ago at a bar in Center City. Great dude -- and I really like him as an announcer.

This is one of the things I disagreed with from the phils article....

Right now, they’ve got a good center fielder, a good third baseman, three or four good starting pitchers, and a couple of decent relievers

Who are the 3-4 good starting pitchers??? Nola is nice -- Velazquez could be disgusting if he learns a third pitch. But I don't see 3, let alone 4 good SPs on this roster. Franco is still unproven -- I'm not ready to call him good yet. And can anyone confidently say Herrera is a CF on a contending team? He takes some horrid routes (remember the hamels no hitter???). I like Neris, but other than that I don't see any future pen pieces either.

At least howard is finally on the bench and one step closer to being shown the door.
Okay 2 good pitchers then. I see your point there. But Eikhoff's been decent for the most part though. A nice surprise.
I think Franco will be fine. Herrera should be an all star this year but you have to remember he is a converted second basemen who never played CF until last year. He might move to right or left when/if Quinn and Williams get here. I guess they could also move him back to second. Can't believe how much he's improved at the plate this year.

If Eikhoff is the #4 or #5 starter in this rotation I am more than content with that future. Like I said, in an ideal world Nola should be your 3. And we're not there yet, but could be sooner than later. Then IF Valasquez can go deep in a season (175-180+ IP) for once and get that third pitch down then he's your 2.

Also, I think everyone is overlooking this goddamn strike zone change for next year. It's fucking stupid. And I definitely go bat in the draft now for that #1 pick.

Joe Buck is a good baseball play-by-play guy. I never had a problem with him or McCarver. Don't care for Buck in football but I'll take him over Pat Summerall any day. I hated Summerall. For some reason everybody reveres him but I think he sucked.

Here's my list of favorite play-by-play guys:

    1) Al Michaels
    2) Marv Albert
    3) Vince McMahon (Yep...)
    4. Kevin Harlan
    5. Harry Kalas

    Ugh I HATE Kevin Harlan.

I think ya gotta go Jim Ross over Vince McMahon though...

Harry's the top of that list - I'll also argue you can't lump national and local guys together. One has to be unbiased while the other I want to be a complete homer.

    LA and Franzke. FTW.

There's an unintentional comedy aspect of McMahon that I always loved. I can actually do a pretty good impression of him on commentary. Jim Ross...especially during the Stone Cold era...is as good as it gets though.

Vern Lundquist is an all timer for me. Whatever he's calling just has the feel of a big time event the moment you hear his voice.

And I agree with JP--local guys are a separate category.

Also, I'll choose to ignore the wrestling mentions.

Verne has gotten old and senile. He calls guys by the wrong name a lot.

I understand not necessarily liking Joe Buck's personality, but guy is a great announcer.

Marv Albert has the perfect voice for the NBA.

Ah, well it probably made it more exciting because he got all pumped anytime anything even remotely happened. Like a 50-50 ball at midfield which is pretty much as routine as it gets and he's screaming.

Eikhoff isn't anything special. Reminds me of a vance worley/JA Happ type.

We will see on Herrera. He won a minor league batting title. He could always hit, even when he played 2B (his approach has def improved though). I love the kid Kingery they picked last year -- he sounds like their 2b of the future. Herrera's best spot is prob LF.

Point is Baumann always overestimates the phils prospects. He's one of the many reasons I stopped reading crashburn alley. all unicorns and rainbows on that site.

    5. Harry Kalas

    Ugh, I hate kevin harlan.

I'd have to narrow a top 5 list down by sport. McCarthy actually isn't bad at football, but he is horrid at announcing baseball (this is actually pretty common -- mlb def the toughest sport to announce)

also, the chick announcing sunday night baseball on espn has made those games unwatchable. she is the worst announcer ever -- any sport. espn really does ruin everything
All of you guys seem to hate McCarthy but I don't have a problem with him at all. He seems run-of-the-mill....like any other baseball play-by-play guy.

You're right about the girl on Sunday Night Baseball. I'm not sure what the point of that even is.
mccarthy's fake laugh makes my skin crawl. that and the fact that he's a mets fan.

If it weren't for Dollar Dog Night tonight, and gorging my face, I'd be at Bone Thugs. Didn't know they were playing till I walked past the TLA last night. Damnit.
This is like the 2nd or 3rd time Bone Thugs have been here in the last year or so. All at TLA.
    Well, fuck me, Cliff.
haha, indeed. I have wanted to get to one of them but always forget. I think last year's was on Groupon
Yeah, apparently this is a 20th anniversary show (I'm sure the others were as well).

Ha, so pearl jam has 20k people fly to the middle of nowhere for their 20th while Bone Thugs has TLA tickets on Groupon. Sounds about right. Though I do want to go
