fwiw I did a lot of research on the chip and pin cards for my trip because I HATE using cash. If you are military you can get a chip and pin card from USAA. Outside of that there are a couple (literally two) credit unions that offer a chip and pin card, and you can join the credit union for a $10 fee. They say that there's no fees but they pass on the foreign transaction fee from VISA.
I concluded that it isn't worth (what i consider to be) the hassle, and I'm just going to hit up an ATM every day. Check with your bank to make sure about fees though. (I use capital one and they don't charge nothing)
Thanks everyone for the credit card and train advice!
to change gears a bit, what are some of your favorite eating spots in amsterdam? thinking of a "typical" American breakfast at a place like Denny's (eggs, bacon, pancakes, sausage), is there an equivalent "typical" Dutch breakfast?
any breakfast, lunch, and dinner recommendations would be appreciated. I'm not really too big on seafood, but am honestly willing to try anything else

I'd suggest just trying to get any tickets at this point, better to be in the building in the upper level than not being in there at all!

Yeah, I'm not that picky. TC GA would be the best, but as long as I'm there.. I gave away my spare TC ticket for the 2006 shows I was at, hoping karma is on my side.

Lot's of places... Barney's Uptown has a good breakfast. Plus the typical fast food junk. McDonalds, Burger King.. I wouldn't eat a meal at those, but I have to confess the Donuts at McDonalds were amazing.. Yes I said donuts at McDonald's..haha.. a most with the Diet Coke...umm make that a Coke Light...with ice!
Also check out De Bijenkorf - It's a giant shopping building in Dam Square. The top floor is a food court with all kinds of different options.. not sure if they have breakfast, but lunch was great and cool view.
Here you grab a tray and can choose your food - there are meat or fish dishes, sandwiches, salads, chips, soups, sushi etc. Dishes cost from €4 for a soup, up to €8-€15 for a main course. Coffee / tea / soft drinks / alcoholic drinks are available, as well as Bijenkorf cakes and puddings.
Quality of the food is probably on a par with V&D La Place, although reviews so far have been mixed since it opened in September 2008.
There are large seating areas are at either end of the Kitchen and at the northern terrace there is another bar which serves Illy coffee and other drinks. The glass roof provides plenty of natural light inside and if the weather is good you can head out onto the terrace.
For the person looking for good breakfast, Barney's on Haarlemstraat is awesome if you like Crepes. I'm leaving from Chicago on the 12 for Amsterdam and am so excited, I'm totally prepared but not all. Anybody go any suggestions regarding data/sim for a phone out there? I'm gonna have my verizon phone but they just screw you on data. Any suggestion would be great.
In regard to data use. In my experience most bars and cafes have free WI fi in Amsterdam, you just have to ask nicely for the password. That's how I get by over there. For anyone who likes craft beer there is a brewey called 't ij which is in the bottom of a windmill. It's a bit out of the way but not that far and they make some really good beers. Also, don't be afraid of the fast food chain Febo. It took me a while to pluck up the courage to buy weird deep fried things from their vending machines but some of them are really tasty. Who doesn't like random breaded and deep fired snacks?
Less than 4 weeks to go. Great to have PJ visit my city again and I am certain it'll be a great time for all of us. There's already been loads of tips and sound advice (myoung321, have you been staying in my neighbourhood Westerpark? ). If there's anything I can still help with, please shout out.
Anybody heading out for drinks or anything on the 14th? If so, what pubs are you going to? Me and my friend are looking to head out, meet up with some people and have the craic considering it's a Saturday night.
16/06/2014: Amsterdam

Yes, we stayed in Westerpark on our last visit. Specifially at Haarlemweg & Van Limburg Stirumstraat This time we are staying a little more central at Prinsengracht & Vijzelgracht..but we loved the Westerpark neighborhood.

Time out: Buy beer and food, stock up at the coffeeshop and head over to the Vondelpark (or Westerpark if that is closer). There's probably music, there's lots of wonderful people to look at and the atmosphere is great. Or take the ferry to the north of Amsterdam and try the terrace of Eye (film museum). Want to have a view? The Nemo museum east of central station has it!
Eating: Dutch food is actually not very interesting, to be honest. Which might be why Amsterdam has restaurants serving food from just about every country in the world. There's one 'cuisine' I would advise you to try if you have the time: Indonesian. Not too spicy, but very tasteful. Go have a 'ricetable', which consists of anything from 6 to 15 small dishes. Also from the days when 'we' still had colonies: have a 'roti' at a Surinam restaurant. These are often not very happy looking places, so get a take away and eat in a park or by a canal. Or go have Spanish tapas somewhere. Order a drink and a little something to eat with it. Repeat until unable to either drink or eat anything else.
And then there's drinking: Don't bother drinking Heineken, there's so much tastier beer around. Try Brouwerij 't IJ, which was already mentioned. Or Café Gollem, the Arendsnest and the Bierfabriek (good food as well).
I think I might have said in another thread but if you are thinking of going for Indonesian food try long pura on rozengracht. It only does evenings, but its really tasty. It's a couple of doors down from velvet records which can be a fun way to pass a bit of time too.

Added Velvet Records to my list of to do's...
