Who hasn't listened to Lightning Bolt?!?!?

  • I had every intention on waiting for the vinyl. It was going to be my first PJ studio album that I would hear on vinyl before any other format. But, as soon as I found out about the stream I was listening to it. Zero self control at all. I'll still make an awesome night out of listening to the record for the first time though.

I have not listen to it yet and plan to wait.

Though I have been drinking paint thinner since it was released on I-tunes and have been in a mild comma.
Do you know what it's like to fall in the mud and get kicked... in the head... with an iron boot? Of course you don't, no one does. It never happens. Sorry, Ted, that's a dumb question... skip that.

Nothing better than having the physical product in your hands for the first listen. Just my opinion!

What is the point of waiting? What if I die tomorrow? You've got to enjoy the present while it is there.

I bought the digital download so I think what I will have on 15th October wont be much different by quality, anyway.

Well if you ordered the digital download then listening to the streaming now makes complete sense. As I've already explained my personal preference is for the physical product.

  • I've been intentionally avoiding listening to Lightning Bolt songs...had a few opportunities to listen to them on dowloads etc...I hope it's worth the wait, and I get the vinyl on Oct. 15th!

  • Not me. I'm almost 40 - I don't listen to new albums from favorite artists on leaked digital files or streaming digital files.

I get up on Tuesday morning, I go to the record store, I buy a copy (CD or vinyl depending on the band and prices), maybe I engage somebody at the store about the album, I go home, I open the packaging and start digging the artwork and liner notes, I put the album on, I mildly indulge in one or two of my favorite substances, I listen. Then, about two weeks later I feel confident in my opinion on the album and whether or not it lands in heavy rotation.

I realize this makes me a bit of a dinosaur, but this process and worked for the last 25 years or so and I'll be damned if I'm changing it up now. To each his own, but I'm a bit weirded out by all the firm and absolute opinions people have by listening to some digital files on their computers. I'm really looking forward to the 15th.

If you die tomorrow, I doubt your dying thought would be, "Damn, I really should have listened to Lightning Bolt on iTunes".

Also, for the very first listen I think it has something to do with hearing it with my favourite headphones on a stereo that I know very well in terms of the sound output and how my ears receive it. I just know that when in that perfect environment with tools I feel comfortable with, my brain is fully ready for the music and nothing else.

  • I'm waiting. The first new album in over 4 years, I can wait a few more days. Wouldn't feel right to listen to a stream. Without the cd case, lyrics, artwork etc. so far I've only heard MYM. Heard some of sirens during espn/Steve Gleason piece. Nothing like listening to a new album in its entirety. I will always each first listen. Diving back to college from the nearest mall 45 minutes away. Hearing songs like In My Tree or In Hiding for the first time and immediately falling in love with them. Listening to Thumbing My Way over and over again during a particularly difficult time. Or listening to avocado about a dozen times and ALWAYS being interrupted as inside Job would start. The mr ei hit to hear tepee I thought "this is a great GREAT song. So I can wait a few more days for a once in a few years/10 times in this life so far and hopefully counting. And yes, I do remember the first time I listened To Ten. Was driving to cr k out colleges in the spring of 92. Had already heard alive and even flow. But came back from my trip with a college chosen and telling my still to this day best fiend that Jeremy was an incredible tune

I have decided to wait it out and listen upon receiving the cd from 10c. i want to put the disk on, grab some beers and turn off the lights while turning up the stereo.

have to say it's been cool reading the positive reviews and i've watched 2 of the 3 interview vids in anticipation of the music. it's a nice build up and i hope to get the dessert on Friday or Saturday? that would be perfecto...

  • No one has really listened to Lightning Bolt yet... plenty of people have heard a fractional part of the album streamed through a laptop at 192 kbps. I'm holding off and looking forward to the new album ritual next week.
  • I made an attempt to listen to the stream but my phone and computer wouldn't cooperate. It must be a sign so I am going to wait, impatiently, for the official release. I've even had friends at work offer their iphone or ipad for my use to listen and I have declined. Its been hard but it will be worth it.

Im honestly surprised so many are adamant about... waiting? Not sure for what exactly.

    But to each their own.

Some people like to hear an album for the 1st time the old school way....cd/vinyl on, booklet in hand poring over the artwork & lyrics.

Some like to hear an album for the 1st time by any means....leaked copy/streaming on a website.

I like to have the physical product for the 1st listen.
Yup. Doesn't seem difficult to understand. I get some want to hear it as soon as they can. For PJ I prefer to have my own set up (stereo, sound, vinyl). I've always done it this way with Pearl Jam (and a small handful of other bands).
  • I'm waiting until the official release date when I pick up the vinyl from my local record store, and put it in on my turntable and piss the neighbors off. I've waited until the official release date for the past nine studio albums, so I guess I will keep the tradition with number ten. It does make it a little tougher knowing it is out there begging to be heard, but I guess I'll wait.

My ritual does not involve leaked tracks or mediocre-quality streaming feeds. It involves my best friend, album in hand, a beer, and a large pizza.

Warming up the amp, carefully slicing plastic covering, pulling out sleeve then album is fore play. Not till you do this do you place needle in groove. That's the full experience. Can't wait. Oh and if you can do it with your best friend versus solo so much better.

  • To any "fan" who hasn't heard LB yet, I would honestly have to question your love/passion for this band. Why the hell would you wait till you get a physical copy when a perfectly good stream is available for free right now? And for those who like to throw on some headphones and listen to it on vinyl, PJ hasn't recorded in analog since Riot Act so what's the point?!! If you die tomorrow, you will be seen as a jackass for not enjoying one last PJ album because of your stubbornness.

There is no need to question my love for this band's music. And I truly do not care what you think of me or my connection with their music.

Dude! If people want to wait that's up to them isn't it? We've waited four years...what's the harm in waiting a few more days? I've never used itunes and have no intention of ever doing so, that's the only reason I haven't heard LB. If it were streaming on a site where you didn't have to download itunes I would definitely listen to it right now, but as it's not I'll wait until next week, But that doesn't make me any less of fan!

I havent listened to it. And there's something to be said about how big a fan you are if you want to position your speakers at a 32 degree angle twelve feet apart, unplug your phone, crack a beer and drop the needle as opposed to clicking on an itunes icon and fidgeting with the shitty little dial on my crap speakers that came with my crap monitor. :P :D
