For the record, the regulars on this board are as arrogant a group of folks that I have ever had the distinct pleasure of loathing. You can all go scratch.

I'd say that's not entirely accurate... there's lots of good level headed folks in these forums. You sort of have to visit between tours and limited merch sales to see who the regulars are. Coming in right after a ticket onsales for a tour or ltd. merch item and your bound to run into some pretty disappointed people..... not all of them are regulars.

    ZOD,
You are level headed, well spoken and respectful. Sorry if you took offense to my post. I get frustrated when a many posters on here refuse to say anything that might question the band's motives or intentions. It s very cult-like. Not healthy IMO.

The cheapest where I live in a pub is (33SEK = $5,10) and the standard price is (49SEK = $7,57)... what does a pub beer from tap cost in USA? :)

I am not a regular, yet I feel the same as you do in the short period of time I've been on these forums. I feel as if I walk among the sheep. Sorry, guys, but thinking differently and questioning everything is an attribute in my opinion.

There are definitely a huge group of people who live on this board... with PJ flashing on their retinas 24 hours a day.
They are devoid of sunlight, their skin translucent.

The only time they exit their homes is to see the band live.

When something negative is said or questioned about the band.... they spazz out.
And so you see, I have come to doubt

Maybe... Or there's a lot of people accessing the web board from work and being a little less productive than they probably should be... ahem.. cough!

The ironic thing is, I bet if I met these folks at a show we would get along really well. On here, it's as if their every post is in defense of 'their' band. It's weird to me. We obviously care about similar stuff. Some of us are a little more critical and maybe not as 'Mesiahish' about the band.

Would you rather hear the 1991 EV or the reported $80,000,000 net worth EV? That's a lot of Pearl Jam ipad covers!

    ...
Bands... all bands... do not make the bulk of their money off of music sales anymore. We may never see another album go platinum (1 million sales) within a calendar year, again. People don't buy CDs and albums like they used to.
Bands make their money on concert tickets and merchandising.
Pearl Jam could cut the price of concert tickets if they did not offset their carbon footprint. But, theey do... and I'm glad they do.
And Pearl Jam T-Shirt pricing is close to what other bands sell theirs for... a Queens of the Stone Age shirt is about 30... Foo Fighters are in the 25 dollar range. Weezer shirts were 30 bucks. And back a few decades, the shirts were priced similar, according to the times. I bought a David Bowie shirt in 1975 and it cost me 15 bucks. The Ticket was 22 bucks. But, gasoline was .33 cents a gallon and you could go to a 7-11 and get a can of Coke and a bag of Doritos for 60 cents. Plus, my wages were $1.80 an hour.
I don't complain because 35 bucks today would not fill up the gas tank of my Civic. 35 bucks is maybe 4 burrito and drink meal at the local City Mex. 35 bucks ain't what it used to be. I also understand that it isn't 1991 anymore.

We are all lucky to have witnessed that time in music history. I agree.

I have the same impression from reading the responses. It seems like people have to defend anything the band or their organization does and it's pretty ridiculous.

In regards to your original topic. I very much agree with you. I don't buy a lot of merch and I'm not really sure how much is out there now although it does seem to be more. What I do notice is a more commercial/corporate message/branding/attitude that I don't really care for. One thing that stood out and I found off-putting was that the email announcing the new album had an ad for some sort of merch that was just as prominent as the album announcement. I thought that was tacky and I think a new album is 1000x more exciting and important than some shorts.

I don't think it's inherently wrong to be more commercial/sell more stuff and there's nothing wrong with making money, however, it makes me less excited about the band and I feel less "connected" to the idea of the band/music/traveling/shows etc. It was never so much about PJ being anti-commercial, but it was about doing things their own way and standing up for their principles, and if too much of that goes away, it dampens the "spirit" of what the band was.

Oh, and just because one band sells a concert T-shirt for $40 doesn't mean a PJ T-shirt for $35 is a good deal. They are both rip offs. If I like one enough I'll buy it anyway but I'm not going to be grateful that they didn't try to get an extra $5 out of me. A high priced T-shirt doesn't change my opinion of the band, but too many commercial and corporate things one after the other do have an effect cumulatively.

    Nitelite10,

You say exactly what I was trying to say, but you say it much more eloquently. Thank you.

Do you think back in the day, Vedder ever thought these would be available for $15 someday...? Cause it makes me sick.

They support a lot of charity and activism. Maybe they look at it that people want to buy this stuff, so by having it available, they earn more and are able to donate more to organizations they care about. If merch didn't sell, they'd stop having it, so clearly folks want it.

To be honest, I think those are kind of cool-looking as far as cards go. But at the same time, there *is* something a bit wrong about it. I don't know if Ed should be a "brand" when he fought so hard to not be a "brand" in the early 90's. Grow and adapt, but don't contradict yourself... There's a fine line, but I think they've overstepped a little.

I am all for merch. I love my tee's. I have one and still wear my shirt from No Code tour. Let's just put it this way, if the band that I fell in love with in 1992 sold playing cards at their merch stand I would have severed our relationship upon seeing this.

I know the band doesn't decide on exactly what goes up for sale, but I don't like what is currently available. We are a heartbeat away from pearl jam sneakers....oh wait, they have those already.

You would have stopped listening to a band you enjoyed in 1992 if they sold playing cards? How ridiculous is that? What does playing cards have to do with the music you enjoyed?

Great points, especially your last sentence.

One can defend some actions of this band and not be a sycophant.

I'm pretty critical of some of their actions and words, but it strikes me as odd to buy their shit and then bitch about it...or, to complain about what IS available for purchase.

(and, I never even knew they had playing cards - has zero bearing on my aural pleasure)

Im not one to defend everything the band/10c does....

But I really dont see what the big deal is with an uptick in merchandise. There are things that bother/ed me more than this.
Music is still everlasting/great. Shows are awesome. Its all pink on the inside.
I actually stopped buying merchandise for the most part as the number of choices increased (as someone eloquently described earlier).

  • Those cards are sort of corny, I'm not sure if they are meant to be a gag gift /funny or what. A lot of the stuff is funny, like the face buttons, the socks ect. The cards have a silhouette of Ed on a surf board with a ukulele in one hand and his suitcase in the other. Usual stuff surfers carry while surfing?

I would be a little embarrassed to pull those cards out and use them in a card game.

I guess for people that have problems with what bands sell, in the future to avoid these sort of issues maybe they should wait to check out the bands merchandise before listening to the bands music.

Ale Rose, was and might still be one of the biggest assholes in the music biz, but I still couldn't bring myself to hate the original line-up's music.
