I went down to the market today to buy groceries. I was pissed to find out they were offering a WIDER SELECTION OF ITEMS than they were last week! Can you believe it, those bastards?
I liked it better when all they sold were Fuji apples, rutabagas and expired Twinkies. I'm starting to think they are just trying to make a profit off of me, by offering goods like milk.
everybody wants the most they can possibly get
for the least they could possibly do
When they start going through the motions on stage and playing the same 22 songs each night, that's when I'll worry about their motivations or "capitalist interests". Until then, they could fill a Walmart full of crap and I wouldn't care.
And not for nothing, this whole notion that materialism MUST be rejected at all costs in order for a band to be allowed in to the cool kids club is a dead notion. It died when people began stealing directly from the artists pockets.
If the music is still speaking then nothing else matters really.
I have noticed more merchandise, which as I clearly recall, people were begging to have for YEARS prior.
The band is doing the right things for their fans, and for themselves, by offering more options, even if they're making money as a result. Guess what? This is called a win-win situation. Profit is not a dirty word, even as it relates to art.

Everyone is welcome to view life as they like, that's the beauty. I see it as a way of dicking fans for their money because they're stupid enough to buy everyday items with a band logo on them. It really is ridiculous once you see things from a different perspective, excusing the club for their greedy actions, or not.

I'm college educated, and I have always been regarded as a pretty intelligent guy in general. I also am fortunate enough to make a good living. I'm not stupid because I buy a t-shirt that I'll wear frequently for the next 10-15 years. I still have a t-shirt from the no code days, and one from the Yield tour. And they are prized possessions. Judging the intelligence of people who you have never met based on how they spend their money is pretty narrow minded.
i find it funny that some people think the band is actually pushing for this shit. its the tenclub.
if you wanna make a bunch of 50 and pushing 50 year olds out to be evil capitalist white devils for saying "yea sure fine" to the 10club when they create new merch, then that's on you, bub.
i have a paper here that entitles me to fast track status

You vote with your dollar every day. If there is a feature that shows how much money you've thrown away on merch, what dollar amount would be personally feasible and what dollar amount would make a person shocked as hell that they've spent a fortune? A LOT of money is spent on the merch, and a LOT is made. I'm sure that a lot of people would be shocked to shit the amount of money they've thrown away on junk merchandise.

The band is sitting pretty, only having to tour very little each year with the profits from merch being so lucrative.
you really think the guys in pearl jam have time for this shit?
like they're sitting in big tony montana offices thinking about all the merch they can make and all the money they can make off it.
they're busy with their families and when someone from their org asks for the ok, they'll get it.
i have a paper here that entitles me to fast track status
Meh. It doesn't really bother me. If they keep throwing shit at the wall, eventually they release something I want. So the more shit they throw at the wall the better
Good point.
I have very few PJ t-shirts but now I want the MYM one. I hope they release it in the store. I've been to shows 7 of the last 8 years so I can't complain.
Because of this post, I just made a trade for this shirt . Thanks OP! And thanks to the member who contacted me after reading that post. Nice surprise on a Sunday night.
I have no problem with the band making a nice profit on my purchases. That doesn't make me stupid or a sucker. They have earned every penny I've ever given IMO. I don't buy as much merch as some. Just a t-shirt at the shows I've attended, and the records/bootlegs. No posters or anything. But, if I did, it is my money that I earned and am free to do with as I please. Some people spend their money on booze and drugs and hookers. Some buy band merchandise. I do all of the above.

Did you read anything I've been writing? It's TOO LUCRATIVE FOR THE BAND TO PASS UP. They profit as much as 10c does.

And the minute a hard core fan strays from 10c (and there are always people leaving), they are stuck with the worthless junk!
Most (nearly all) people who bitch and moan about somebody else financially capitalizing on their own talent and success would do exactly the same, if not more, if they had the same opportunity. FACT.

Not at all. People are lined up for hours in the 95 degree heat. There is also a nice market for those looking to part ways with their old merch (posters/records, etc)

your employee says to you- hey dude we're gonna make this hsit and sell it ourselves without getting a 3rd party involved....you'll make a shitload and my kids will be able to go to a private college
what the fuck are you gonna say?

That's true, either reselling or donating to the Wishlist benefits. People DO move on, that's why I find permanently tattooing ourselves with the band's name may be regretted years down the road. Just ask a friend of mine how he feels about the Dead's Steal Your Face tat he has...
I have a sweet "Eddie Vedder" tramp stamp, but there's no way I'll regret it, ever. Unless he ever gets photographed with a boy band or something horrible like that.

Private college education is overrated and Way too expensive. Just ask Eddie and Jeff!

I don't know why offering the fans what they were asking is dicking them, and I don't know how you account for saying that fans are stupid because they want to buy something or collect something...
This thread has become pointless, somebody please lock it...
... I am not in the business of being liked anymore ...
Since they've started releasing more merch, I've actually bought less. When there was just a few things released here and there I always felt like I had to have it. But now I see all of it and know I can't afford it all, so whatever. Also knowing that a tour was coming up I decided to wait to give them my money. But I'm glad they've started making more, I always thought it was such a small amount of merch for a band this big with fans that are always willing to spend their money.

I hear ya, I would love to be one of those people that you mention as ' against everything mainstream', but I am not. I work hard at my job, provide for my family, and am planning for my future. I am very open minded about issues related to tweaks and modifications of a business model as long as it doesn't destroy the integrity of the band's original intent.
I made reference to a pinball machine and credit card because I have watched other bands like KISS stop making music and put all their effort into capitalizing on a brand.
I will not defend my love and dedication to this organization; like many do on here. I will continue to roll with the punches as far as ticketing goes...you won't see me complain about seniority recognition (See board join date) and you won't hear me complaining about set lists.
However, I will continue to raise an eyebrow when I notice a change in the way things are run.
Yeah, you'll be raising an eyebrow I bet. But why'll you're doing that, I'll be busy not questioning change and let the band do whatever they want. They got to be a respectable band by not caring what other people think or say. And that includes their "fans" questioning what they put in their online store and for how much. I mean really, how much of a fan are you if you have to make a thread about whether or not the band is becoming too commercial. Next time, make a thread about how you've changed your way of thinking and then I'll give you a little bit more respect.

If I had a nickel/cent/swedish krona for every time someone get that exact response. I would be rich enough to buy myself a Benny Vinyl
