brad - don't mean to brag, but that pre-emptive "banana's" came straight out of 4th row centre i think... and coincidently my mouth.

i had been having a conversation with my mate about that exact excuse howard gave for interest rate rises and inflation earlier that week!

i think i can also hear myself on sydney 1 when ed says that 'there must be some complete fucking assholes out there somewhere' and 2 people, a guy and a girl (me possibly??), yell out 'john howard'. pretty sure that one is me too. thought i was real funny.... idiot! haha.

I just found Ed's "Banana Rant" on the Melbourne 1 boot.

"We've been giving our president shit for the last 6 years and apparently your guy was trying to blame the downward slope of your economy of the price of bananas. I hate to be crude but I've got a banana right here for John Howard (Ed grabs his crotch). Tell him to get his hands off our President's banana and pay attention to the real world ..."

    Seattle 2005
SF 2000, 2001, 2003--- oh or you can come to terms and realize you're the only one who cannot forgive yourself
  • I can see that this is winding down but did want to mention that not only did I think that the crowd went off in Perth, if you listen to the boot, just before Wasted Reprise (from memory) Ed gives a very heartfelt "Thank you so very fucking much" to the crowed for their response. I'm not gonna argue with that ;) Actually it nearly brings me to tears when I hear it on the boot.

Erin - that is awesome!!! Sorry for saying "a girl (I think)"! Haha, I didn't want to offend anybody! But well done!

Hearing yourself on a boot is priceless. At Melb 3 98 I was front row and made a point of screaming out "Hi Heather!" at one point, as a thank you to the person from Tassie who couldn't make the show and gave me her GA tix, and you can just hear it.

lol at your comparison of 4 nations.

Guys, I think you're giving him too hard a time, he obviousely got defensive after the tirade after his ticket fiasco, and said some things he has since withdrawn (and I hope appologised for his part in the ticket mix up).

His criticism is with the crowds at the shows, and he is allowed to have an opinion, personally, if I wasn't rockin' so hard myself I'd be inclined to agree with him, I was at times a little disappointed in the crowds, and while the boots are great, crowd involvement isn't in the same league as EU and America.

Having said that, it doesn't mean that we are less appreciative, just have different ways of enjoying the shows.

We are meant to be tolerant so let him have his opinion, and recognise it for what it is. It is not an attack on us, but one person expressing how he saw the crowds at the shows.

Thanks for some backing man. Appreciate that. I really did not mean to offend any Aussies and i know my statement about the crowds was not a deliberate attack on them, however in retrospect i should have forseen the backlash i would get. Aussies like Canadians are proud people and sometimes we all get a little over defensive. That said i appreciate your well roundedness.

Just meaning that, I have never had problems with being crushed at any australian concert (pearl jam or otherwise).. Whereas people in other countries (where the crowds apparantly go harder) get crushed. I would prefer to have a less intense crowd and still be alive, than to have a very intense crowd and be dead/crushed.

Hope your head is no longer itchy.

Stella, as general rule I'd agree with you, but there was that girl that died at the BDO, and weren't there problems at the PJ show Melbourne 1995 when the fence was knocked down.

PLUS, bit spat on at You Am I concerts :D

I'm sure there are more examples.

  • So when Eddie said at Melb 2, "you've just been great thanks so much", does that mean the Aussie crowd was lame??

we were a little quieter, thats because of the general audience, but the band didnt think we were lame at all, quite the opposite in fact!

OGD, I'm sorry you didn't have a good time with the Aussie crowds. Having nothing to compare it to, I wouldn't know how we go against the rest of the world. But I don't really care anyway. I think I made the point pages ago that I had a good time and the people around me all had a good time, all 20,000 odd of them, and that's all that matters to me! :) Anyway, not one for slagging off at the Canadians, or anyone else for that matter, (well governments maybe! ;) ) so sorry it wasn't as good as you'd hoped, and hope that you can accept that maybe it's just a cultural thing. We being cruisey and all. :D If I ever get to see them in Canada I'll get back to you with a more rounded opinion!!! :D

Yep, he also said, at the start of the 1st encore, "Well, on behalf of us and the Kings of Leon, we want to thank you for being the best crowd we've had in Australia yet this year." Melbourne 2's crowd was ON.

And if you listen to Indifference around the 4:05 mark his voice is cracking.. possibly in part due to him losing it, but I swear, from where I was 2nd row centre, I could see tears welling up in his eyes.

So any claim Melbourne 2's crowd sucked has me dumbfounded, as it was the best of the 3. Hey, even I'm not immune to hometown pride.
