  • Hey Lanners, you better get back on duty......things are pretty quiet here. Or are you still out of commission with that bug ?

Alright, I have question: can anyone think of a better rock concert EVER played in the Maritimes than PJ's gig in Halifax ?

Bump from an Antigonisher that now lives in Vancouver who is kicking himself for not flying home for the Halifax show :)

I will next time for sure!

Of course this question depends on people's tastes, but it got me thinking... I was at Aerosmith in 1993 around Xmas, and I started wondering what the setlist was for that show... I did some google searches, but maybe some people here might know.

Setlist, Metro Centre 1993 (I think it was the 28th of December)? Anyone?

    Halifax, Summer 2008... they return!

I didn't either. One of my biggest regrets in the last several years. You know what gonna happen dontcha ? Every Maritimer from Que. westward will come back for the next one - andf lets face it, there's tons of Maritimers all over Canada. The only solution is to have PJ play 3 nights in Halifax !!!!

I brought this question up b/c I thought about it for a minute and I was unable to thinkl of something better. And I'm not partial to the gig itself - I wasn't even there !!! But my inability to think of something better takes in a lot of territory.....consider the following concerts that i have witnessed in halifax overe the years:

Matt Minglewood - 1979? - Pr. Andrew High school - He rocked the joint.
    April Wine (X 2 or 3) - '79 - 82? - Metro centre - kickass concerts
    Rush/Max Webster - '78 ? - metro centre - can't remember the gig !!!
Van Halen - early 80's - that was a great show.
Ted Nugent - sorry, that one sucked
Neil Young - '96? - great concert, but not PJ in '05, that's for sure
Jeff Healey - '98? - again, great gig, but not PJ material
Matt Good - X2 - late 90's - both were excellent gigs. esp. the later one.

There were many more, but none, not one, came close Pj's gig in Halifax. That was simply fucking top drawer. Wasn't it Jeff who said in a Philly radio interview that the Canadian shows were "epic", and went on to single out Halifax as one of the top shows ? Shit, The Coast magazine ran a review tearing PJ a new arsehole - that tells ya something right there...LOL.

Ultimately, you're right, it is a subjective call as to the best gig - but even with that in mind, I'd like someone to identify a better show in the Maritimes.....(and honourable mention goes to Matt Good - that second show at Dal was fucking spot on).

WOOT WOOT! Three nights would rock and certainly be the death of me, and that would be fine because it's PJ. i would die happy.

i'm back...went from being sick with the flu to going on vacation for almost a week.

i can't believe it's been almost a year since the show. seems like yesterday!

you have to keep in mind that the reviewer from The Coast was there for SK and SK only. I know a bunch of people who went for the same reason and left when PJ came on. i know that Ed and the guys are good friends with the girls formerly known as Sleater-Kinney, but they attract two very different crowds. Most SK fans i know are hardcore lesbians into screechy female rock...not exactly the prime target market for Pearl Jam.

so regardless of what happened that night, PJ were going to get the short end of the stick when it came to a review in The Coast.

  • Just wondering what the thoughts on the "BIG News" post is that someone put here earlier. Apparantly there's some big PJ news to be announced in the coming weeks at some radio station in Winnipeg. Shameless publicity or maybe another North American Leg??? Your thoughts.....

Personally, I'd say PJ will be back to Halifax. How could they not. The band was so ON that night. Eddie was clearly having a blast, and was very talkative and joking around. Also, with Halifax being not-so-out-of-the-way, and more and more larger acts hitting the maritimes lately (Stones in Halifax, Black Eyed Peas in Charlottetown), I think bigger bands will finally become more common. Here's to PJ in 2007!
"It makes much more sense to live in the present tense."

    Toronto 2000
    Montreal 2003
    Halifax 2005
    St. John's (2x) 2005
    Boston 2010
    Hartford 2013
    Quebec City 2016
  • Ya, I saw that too. I dunno, I sometimes think the band will be back. But then i read other shit where, for example, PJ *did not* return to State College after that monumental 2003 gig. Many people were shocked that they never returned there........so who knows ?! Having a great gig doesn't guarantee a return show.

But i'll tell ya, Neil and PJ in Halifax would be a rock-and-roll wet dream. And actually, THAT SHOW would finally be the one to top PJ's 2005 Halifax appearance - would it not ?!
  • I thought Halifax people might find this interesting. Its from another thread on the Porch, "Wow,......":

"The inclusion of Newcastle on the Australian tour.
If anybody doesn't know about this then (in short) Andre_W, my mate Mark and myself started a petition 3 months ago for the guys to play here in Newcastle. Momentum gathered and people jumped on board and 2 days ago we succeeded in our quest.
What makes this show special is that it's the first time PJ have played outside an Australian State Capital, it's the smallest venue PJ have played in Australia, and it all came about because of people power."
  • If that news about the Newcastle show is valid, then keep this thread going, it's hard to believe how long ago the PJ in Hali show was but it's obviously left quite am impression, like most people are saying it looked like the band had a great time too. Let's keep hoping and don't kill this thread until they come back, then we can start up another one for a third show.

i'm up for that...but we need to recruit some more people to help us, since i'm at work all day monday to friday and don't dare access the Pit from the office. not sure how the powers that be would react.

as i said in the thread about this "big news" if the words Pearl Jam and Halifax are mentioned in the same sentence in the affirmative, then i will surely shit my pants. :D

  • G'day,

Count me in for a petition for Halifax! They'll be back! I'm certain of it. How could they not return! Its like a hop-skip-jump from Quebec! Keep coming East fellas! We'll have a barrell full of Keith's on ice, and you can try the Keith's Red!

  • Pearl Jam in Halifax again!!!! I'll be there from P.E.I. for sure and next time I'm bringing alot more friends, It would be absolutely selfish to not try to include as many of my friends to experience a night like we had in Halifax a year ago. Come back.............

  • Hey, I'm still waitin' for someone to slam me for that Matt Minglewood reference, as though that concert would have been, in any way, a threat to PJ's concert in '05. LOL. Not sure why I threw that one in there, except for the fact that I'm retarded, and it was a personal favourite of mine.
