Another problem with this album is that I really am sick of Corduroy and Betterman. Its a great song but I will take a lot of PJ songs over it. It is probably how some fans who've heard Evenflow non-stop feel, although I can't quite tire of it. Not For You, Nothingman, Satan's Bed, Immortality are all up there high for me but yeah some of the crap like Pry to drags it down.

ranked the songs on Vitalogy 1-10 just finished listening

    Last Exit 8
    Spin The Black Circle 8
    Not For You 9.5
    Tremor Christ 8
    Nothingman 9
    Whipping 7
    Pry, To 2
    Corduroy 10
    Bugs 6
    Satan's Bed 8
    Betterman 5
    Aye Davanita 2
    Immortality 10

I don't mind saying Ten is my favourite, I discovered it at a time in my life when you're hyper-receptive to music (i.e early to mid teens), and that album was the beginning of everything.

I always have a tough time ranking PJ albums, it changes with time. I didn't used to care for Riot Act and Binaural at all, then after a while I got it somehow and they sound richer and better each time.

    Hey, Foxymophandlemama, That's Me 3

Agreed, I am sick of reading on Twitter these clueless people quoting Betterman using the #PearlJam hash tag and they have no ####ing clue that the song is about a man beating up a woman all the time and she hasn't found the courage to leave him, they have turned into a ####ing love song!I use to give it a 10, but it has been ruined for me, by these people celebrating it, I am sure it will eventually be down to a 3 for me, this is a 10 version for me, but we will never be lucky enough to ever see this version again, who knows he may of even been writing about his own mother getting abused? the band use to just go out and kick ass on the song but now it has been turned into a campfire sing along, it lost all it's intensity for me

Yeah Betterman is pretty enough, but I think that's the problem. It seems almost celebratory in tone so people interpret it that way I guess. It's like have these people listened to a word Ed is saying in this song, like at all or do they just hear the pretty music?

Eddie is one of the great poets of our generation, but people need to pay attention to the lyrics, even Stone made a comment about it on VH1 Storytellers, he found it strange that it had become such a popular love song

Betterman- I always heard it as tragic loss. It reminds me of a relationship I blew once upon a time.

Edit: not as a result of me being abusive- not at all- so my story does not follow the story line of the song other than the idea of loss.

Eddie said it is about an abusive relationship on VH1 Storytellers

Waitin', watchin' the clock, it's four o' clock, it's got to stop (the abuse)
Tell him, take no more, she practices her speech
As he opens the door, she rolls over
Pretends to sleep as he looks her over (so he won't abuse her anymore)

She lies (telling a lie) and says she's in love with him, can't find a better man
She dreams in color (black & blue), she dreams in red (bloody), can't find a better man
    Can't find a better man
    Can't find a better man

    Ohh...

Talkin' to herself, there's no one else who needs to know (embarrassed that she is being abused)
    She tells herself, oh...

Memories back when she was bold and strong
And waiting for the world to come along
Swears she knew it, now she swears he's gone
She lies (telling a lie) and says she's in love with him, can't find a better man
She dreams in color(black & blue), she dreams in red (bloody), can't find a better man
She lies (telling a lie) and says she still loves him, can't find a better man
She dreams in color (black & blue), she dreams in red (bloody), can't find a better man
    Can't find a better man
    Can't find a better man

She loved him, yeah, she don't want to leave this way
She needs him, yeah, that's why she'll be back again
Can't find a better man (Can't find a better man)
Can't find a better man (Can't find a better man)
Can't find a better man (Can't find a better man)
    Can't find a better man

pretty obvious what the song is about, and Eddie even said so

A ranking of songs would be interesting as well, but I know which one's they are for me... as over played and radio friendly as they may be... my top 5:

    Black
    Corduroy
    Jeremy
    I Got Id
    In My Tree

If I am told, "every time I hear "betterman", I think of you", one more time... I'm going postal.

Alive, Jeremy, Daughter, yellow led are mostly the only things (clear channel) , my local radio station plays.

Recently they gave a DJ his/her own Pearl Jam Hour. He or she is in this club and they have been doing a really awesome job.

These lists are so interesting to me.
Pj radio is looking for guest DJ's on the XM . Submit your wishlist... play list. Every Tuesday a club member is chosen. Very kewl

I can put ten closer to my top, but I need to not hear any of it for at least a year. It's been wayyyyyyy overplayed, and Yep.

That's the beauty of their music, that while obviously the lyrics came from somewhere in terms of story telling, the band themselves fully support people drawing on their own experience to relate to the music. It is supposedly one of the reasons they stopped making music videos back in the 90s. Furthermore, Ed has been directly quoted on how the fans have changed what Alive means to him, also a song not meant to be "happy". The music is what you get from it, and they want it that way.
