    That was almost unintelligible.

If Canada was making decisions that impacted you you would give a rat's ass. US politics and laws impact us. So we care. Also, Canadians tend to give a shit about the rest of the world and what happens in it, especially as the world is more and more a global community and economy. I know that is not a sentiment generally felt by a lot of Americans.

good lord. this is barely understandable. I already said I care because I have close relatives in the US whom I care for. most people in the world care about slaughter in other nations. maybe you don't, but others do.

I can't seem to make any sense if your comment comeback girl.
If someone breaks into her home to do her harm, why does it matter if she knows them or not?
That should not change your course of action. Furthermore, to suggest that if a woman owns a firearm she is likely to have that used against her seems to give little credit to woman.
Seems like an attack on women actually, like the article I just posted says.
    Your comments are mind bottling.
If you are genuinely concerned about the "War on Women" and don't want to just use it as a a buzzword to push forward a political agenda, then it's important to understand and present accurate information about the true risks to women's safety. We've seen this used as a bargaining chip during the election (with very damaging misinformation about rape being presented), with the delay in re-upping the VAWA grant, and now with the issue of gun control. Pushing forward mistruths that provide a false sense of security does nothing to help women. We've known for a long time now that women are a lot more likely to be harmed by someone they know (often an intimate partner) then by a stranger. Because of the dynamics inherent in an abusive relationship, she is much less likely to use a gun against a partner and instead have it used against her. That's not "giving little credit to women." It's about understand the dynamics at play in those relationships. PJ_Soul did a good job of outlining some of the reasons why. I respect that we have different ideas about gun control, and as I've said on a few threads I think we really need to look at the underlying causes for violence in general to properly address the issue in the long-term (ie. socialization, culture, access to opportunities and resources). I'm a little sick of having women's safety and rights used as political bargaining chip (by both sides) instead of having it addressed as a public health issue with accurate information and a genuine desire to make real changes in those areas.

So set up a thread on abortion and talk about it there. What we are discussing in this is the merits of gun control over allowing the current state of affairs to continue. I see there have been a few more shootings this week, and still some of you think there are no issues to discuss.

    Amazing

let me ask- why do some people oppose abortion but are pro guns? it makes no sense..why do they care about something not even born yet more than people that exist?

on 1/19, the first ever gun appreciation day happens. two days before mlk day and we all know how he died.

also, If Rosa Parks had a gun, she wouldn't have taken a seat at the back of the bus, she would've car-jacked it! - S. Colbert. More guns! More Guns!

For anybody looking for objective reasoned debate, good thought provoking article.
  • I'm curious as to the 'cooling down period' that is in existence. Worded as is... isn't this a concession on the part of legislation that someone's intent to purchase the gun legally could be out of anger with malice intended? Hence, the need to 'cool down' before getting the gun in your mad hands? It's kind of like somebody saying, "Count to 10 and breathe! Feel better? Okay... now you can have your gun."

So, somebody 'cools down'... and then they can have a gun. But what about the next time they get mad? They now have the gun.

The 'cool down period' worked in this situation, but I think it's telling that the law acknowledges weapons are not good in people's hands when they are angry:

Wow, never takes long for the racism to show itself.

Side note, was thinking of it earlier, if some of you gun nuts refuse to abide by any new regulations that are put into place, does this not by right, mean you are breaking the law, i.e. make you a "bad guy" as some like to so eloquently put it.

And haven't those same people mentioned that it should be the goal of everyone to ensure the bad guys don't get their hands on said weapons. Does this mean that it is okay for law enforecement to take your weapons from you are you are not now classed as a law abiding/responsible gun owner?

Anyone want to try their hand at this one?? Anyone

Well...when you say "you gun nuts", are you just talking to one or two people here? I haven't seen anyone foaming at the mouth for an arms & ammo free-for all. And by the same token, can we apply the term "nut" to those who want to ban ALL guns, as I've also read sporadically on this forum?

Seems most here have been pretty reasonable in their discussions, even during disagreements.

As someone else pointed out in one of our plentiful gun threads, don't punish all for the actions of a few.

    (oh,the irony :P )

You might want to go back over some of the posts if you have not read that. And feel free to apply the term to those who advocate a full ban, in fact, apply it to whom ever you want.

My point is quite simple, to those who stand by the argument of - no sir, don't you dare touch my guns, it's my right, helps me stop the bad guys" etc etc etc. I am simply asking that if the law is changed and they fail to comply, does this not also make them irresponsible or indicative of the bad guy, given their failure to follow the law of the land.
