I wish I could say the same. Don't get my wrong-- if this happened in my home town and especially if someone I knew were gunned down (and unfortunately, I have known the pain of someone I knew, an innocent, who was shot and killed), then yes, I would feel heartbroken and horrified. But because this is a regularly recurring situation in this country, my reaction anymore is a dull sense of disgust and disappointment in something that is all too familiar. These incidents bring out a fair amount of cynicism and disappointment in me.
I totally understand your viewpoint and feelings of cynicism and disappointment.
The only solution I see is to vote in the party with a large enough majority to pass meaningful and effective common-sense gun legislation. Unless they get a big enough majority and manage to make that a priority before the next time midterm elections occur, then it will be more of the same.

The NRA lobby is strong. They spend millions on politicians. The second amendment is written in stone. It will take a nationwide movement, over a few years, for things to change. Which is a shame. Unfortunately, there are states where it is easy to get guns and ammunition. Every time I go to Japan I am amazed that the police do not carry guns and has one of the lowest rate of gun deaths in the world. You can go to a strange bar with naked ladies. But have a gun, and you go to jail. Maybe something we can learn from them.
I figured the NRA itself is weaker now than its ever been, but I have no knowledge/proof of that.
I agree with a nationwide movement over an extended period of time for meaningful change to occur.
A majority of citizens want common sense gun reform, but they don't want to elect the officials in the numbers needed for that to happen.
The NRA is still there, they just do not have a movie star as a frontman. Their money still buys policy. How many more school shootings do we need? Kids being killed because access to guns is too easy. Walk into a gun store and leave fully armed. Then drive across state lines and sell it for triple. But yet all people talk about is how their new air fryer might cost $50 more because of tariffs. It is a sad state of affairs.

The Second Amendment never changed, it’s that the gun lobby started a misinformation campaign regarding its meaning decades ago, and bought off congress to have “pro Second Amendment” judges put in place.

I'm thinking we need a "Gnus with guns" thread. What do you think?
