IF YOU'RE GOING, do yourself a favor, get as close as possible so you can hear their amps over the PA.

It's been over 10 days and I still can't get over how bad it sounded in Oakland. Had a few more friends verify they couldn't make out a thing either, one even in the VIP section next to the soundboards. I just don't get it, been to soooo many loud thrashing rock and metal shows and have never had an experience like that before. And then I recall back in '11 in SF, how far out to either side they hung those PA stacks, how less than optimal that sound was too.

Don't get me wrong, MATT sounded awesome. He obviously gets his drums tuned in just fine -- different kit, and just so much more thunderous than his PJ kit. Sheer joy! Kim by himself was there, but distant, Chris's guitar was panned pretty far right away from me, but again, alone, you could hear the sound. And then Ben, I dunno. Pretty wild tone for a bass I guess, but when it's mixed in with the guitars, just ... mud. Mud mud mud.

I mean plenty of acts plays the same riffs on guitar and bass and you can HEAR them both, sure they combine and make a good crunch, but you can hear the guitar up there and the bass down there. There was none of that with Soundgarden. Just one big, loud SOUND. No distinction, everyone muddying up on top of each other.

And then Chris, well, he's gotta be a challenge with his four octave register, his quiet singing ramping up into those screams. Heard a bit of mic feedback during song 2-3. And yep, there it still is during the encores. Lame. But most of all, just couldn't hear him, waaaay too low in the mix.

And i just gotta conclude, THAT's the sound they're going for -- these guys are pros, they hire pros no doubt. I've heard worse out of small club opening bands, but not by much. They know how to mix albums, great sound on King Animal, you can hear each instrument just fine. You can do that live too.

They chose not to... So, my advice, get there early, get up on the rail and make sure those amps are as close to your ears as possible.

  • Given what was said in the previous post... the Vancouver show's sound sucked. Ruined what could have been a great concert. If they want it to sound that way... yikes.

My guess is that one of their cousins is in charge of sound. He drinks heavily and needs a break. They are exercising patience with him even though the crowd must endure sound similar to that produced by stock 8-track stereos in Chrysler Cordobas.

    Bad. Really really bad.

Agreed. I couldn't get 2 for GA. I got 2 tickets for Wallingford in section 204, row YY, seats 3 and 4.

At 10 sharp I was on, entered 2 for GA and it had nothing.

I think the fuckers at borgata held all the tix! I was quick and on a fast computer with ZERO tix available. Something's fishy.

Got two very distant orchestra tickets for Louisville. Had to keep re-entering for tickets for over ten minutes before I got anything but "no tickets available at this time." I was starting to figure that with the likely small percentage available for the "fan club" presale, and the fact that the password was easily accessible, there wouldn't be any available from minute one, but I kept trucking for a few minutes. Got stuck with Row MM of the orchestra (RR is the last row, and I'll be well under the balcony overhang, which starts before the end of the single alphabet), but, hey, I'm in the building for a small-venue Soundgarden show, so I won't whine too much.

I may look again during the public onsale to see if something better pops up and pass the MM tickets along, but I'll probably just stick with these and make the best of it. It's still better, distance-wise, than I'd have at most arena shows for bands, so how bad is it, really?
  • Honestly, the first 3-4 times I tried, it kept saying no tickets available. But on my 5th-6th try I got them. I can still pull singles and doubles for Monmouth. But that show may not be as in demand as others. I only picked it since I used to live within walking distance from the campus growing up and my brother's still live 5 minutes away.

Agreed. Something is going on. I'm in the computer lab at school with perfect connection and I couldn't believe it. It's just ridiculous that at exactly 10, no GA tickets were available.

Also, I just picked best available and not GA. And try just scoring GA one ticket at a time- that works for me sometimes as well.

I think I'll be fine. I'm in the orchestra section, just far back. Hopefully the sound isn't too bad like people have said. Oakdale Theater holds only 5,000.

When I saw them in DC the sound was fine. I've read more reviews where the sound was good, not sure what happened on the west coast with them. Seems that was where most of the trouble was.

ok, so it's almost 10 am, and no link for Houston?? Figured tickmaster might do the presale, but they aren't doing a presale until March 14th here's to hoping for a link at 10 am :?

No link, so I guess no presale through fan club- great! :nono:

While I don't disagree that the ticket business is shady, it's not that surprising to click at exactly the sale time and still get no hits. In my market (Louisville), they're playing an approximately 3000-seat theater. Assume 10% of tickets available for the "fan club" presale (based very loosely on the ballpark figures we've been given in the past by Ten Club for PJ sales, though it's probably apples and oranges), and that's 300 tickets that were available at 10:00. And they could be bought in quantities of up to four--so, conceivably, the first 75 people in the entire Louisville area (or with interest in getting to Louisville for the show) could eat up all the tickets immediately--which is to say, have tickets in their cart that are blocked from other users looking at until they're bought or the transaction is cancelled. And surely there were more than 75 of us trying to log on for that show.

It was about ten minutes of "none available" and re-entering my request before I had tickets pop up, probably because someone timed out trying to find their credit card number or something. Once a pair of tickets showed up on my screen, I grabbed them, even if they were four rows from the back wall of the theater. I'm glad to be in.

And I keep putting "fan club" in quotes above, because this wasn't a protected fan club sale, like 10C (where, whether it's F5 or lottery, you have to go through the fan club website as an active member) or like U2, where each member gets a unique password with a limit on the number of tickets it will buy. This was a mass mailing to anyone who wanted to sign up for the mailing list, with a password common to all recipients that could be passed around to anyone. So there's no keeping scalpers/brokers from taking advantage of the password to lock up tickets early. I'm just relieved there was at least an attempt at keeping it fan-friendly by limiting orders to 4 tickets--there have been several arena shows recently where the presales all had 8 or 10-ticket limits, which is super scalper-friendly (they can gobble up more tickets in fewer transactions). The system is incredibly crooked (and always has been, even going back to the "camping in line at a record store" era), and we all suffer for it as fans as long as we value the live experience enough to put up with it.
