Losing Hope for New Album... Really

edited September 2012 in The Porch
Just read that Brad is touring Europe in February... yippee (sarcasm)... I mean are these guys even a band anymore? RNDM? Corporate gig coming up... solo tours... Matt rejoining his old band... Ed joining Bruce in Chicago... BluRay fiasco... no Philly DVD... It's been 3(?) years since Backspacer.... do the guys hate each other now?

I KNOW they just came off a small tour in Europe and Jay Z and 2 more to come but it just feels like the guys can take the time out to fly all over the globe to do their random (RNDM) solo stuff but they can't get together to make an album or work more that 14 or so days with each other (shows)...?

The boots are starting to sound stale to me... same stuff over and over... Alive/Yellow Ledbetter.... RVM... Given to Fly... predictable

Just getting frustrated... I like some of the solo stuff but nothing compares to the band together... these guys can bang out songs in their solo groups in a matter of weeks but for some reason there is a problem getting together and making music... I just don't think they like each other any more...

Just my $.02...

The new album will come.....eventually. I agree it is a bit frustrating. I think there will be a lot of fed up PJ fans if the next album turns out to be less than stellar since it will likely be at least 4 years since Backspacer. That being said, I'll be stoked if theres a nice US tour next year regardless when the next album comes out. Here's hoping there will be!

How about using the time to discover new music... non pj related music. There is so much music out there and so many bands. The new PJ record will come, just give it time.

Chad Stokes from Dispatch and State Radio just put out a new album for both bands. Check them out, you won't be disappointed. He also put just put out a solo album.

Look at it this way - are you doing the same thing, with the same people, that you were doing 20 years ago? Its pretty awesome that they still tour and create together at all. Patti Smith said that Neil Young told her that you don't go 'chasing songs', and that when the time is right it will happen. I believe Pearl Jam maybe respects Neil Young just a little, and I bet they've heard the same thing from him. It happens when it happens. People have to rejuvenate and challenge themselves in different ways. If they're not feeling it, they're not feeling it - you can't force creativity. Would you rather they put out something they're not happy with, simply to meet a deadline?

Boots are starting to sound stale? That's outrageous. The band changes their setlist plenty from night to night.

Agreed on the boots. I stopped listening to the live shows after the 04 VFC shows.

After awhile, its all the same.

No I haven't... I've been to 45 shows and want to go see 45 more. But the bottom line is is that PJ is very predictable. OP is right. Don't flatter yourself

I'm not flattering myself, I'm just realizing the diversity of their setlists. If I asked you to predict the set for their next non festival show you won't even be close.

    Hate to say it...
The band may be slowing down a lot over the years ahead...
The next album...might be a long time, and I'll wait for it to be good....
    Back Spacer...weakest? possibly.....
Ed's voice? Not quite the same but, age does change us all.....
I understand....just a lot don't take it too well here...
Going to see RUSH, next month....will it be the last of RUSH? Only time will tell..I have seen every tour since 1981 Moving Pictures....

Are you kidding me? I am pretty sure I will be able to nail 90 percent of their encore's. After a while it gets old and stale like the OP said. My biggest complaint with PJ is with all their material, they continue still bore us with Alive and RITRW and YL and Just Breathe and RVM and EF and so on. Face it dude its all the same after a while. How awesome would it be if Alive was played once every forth or fifth show? Instead of every fucking night!!

Neil Young has put out a new album every year or 2 since the early 70's and has put out 4 (FOUR) since 2009 including one due in October.

They are being creative... Just not with each other. These guys are musicians for a living for christsakes. They just don't like to do it with each other.

The sets are different every night but at this point there is no mystery anymore and too much predictability. A few b sides with the same easy crowd pleasers... Same songs end the main set. Slow songs in the 2nd set and Alive, rockin, yellow Ledbetter etc to end.

Honestly? That would suck. I fucking loved that song the first time I heard it back in 1992 and I still do today.

Yep let's see it. Alive is one song out of 25- say there are 4 more played almost every show. There's still 20 songs left to play!

i'm not losing hope at all. from everything i've read/heard, they're halfway done.

i have a feeling that 2013 will be a fun year for us as fans.

also, i love the "side projects"....especially Brad. (which isn't a side project at all) stoked to see RNDM in November & i think these projects/bands make them better as a band.

I think Alive is one of those songs that SHOULD be played every night...but give some others a break (Even Flow, Small Town, Yellow Ledbetter, RITFW) I kind've agree about the setlists..I think that's why I don't have any interest in newer boots anymore. I mean, they have so many songs and they hardly play anything from No Code, Binaural, and Riot Act anymore..When they do it's usually the same handful of songs.

Look I'm sorry if I am getting under any one's skin here. It's just that I love this band so much but they are becoming very predictable which drives me nuts. I don't for the life of me understand why anyone would want to hear the same song every night when there are SO MANY to choose from. I'm sorry but that is lazy to me. And for the people who say that PJ mixes up their setlists much more than any other band... umm you need to get out more!

Obvoiusly you have never done a run with PJ. By the forth or fifth show I can guarantee you you will be sick of it. Did you go to PJ20? I was at the top of the lawn and when YL was playing, the place was emptying out like the show was over! Predictable!!
    Yes, I was there.

We're still waiting for your predictions. Stop stalling.

i run while listening to PJ all the time & it never bothers me. i didn't notice the place emptying out at PJ20, either.

You weren't on the top of the lawn were you? Why would I make that shit up?
