    Oh, those evil rich!

How about..."successful". Perhaps some, many, earned their wealth. Perhaps some, many, were your "average American" and worked for what they now have. How is this a bad thing? Why would their opinions be declared null and void?

Me, I don't tack worthiness based on how much someone has, or has not, in the bank. I've learned from people from all walks of life. My discounting the opinion of someone because they're affluent would be just as short-sighted as dismissing that of one who's not.
while i agree with you that discounting someone's opinion based on wealth is silly, do you have any stats on social class mobility? by that i mean how many "average americans" have gone from 50% or lower on the class scale to the top 10%...5%...1%... point1%? Conversely how many 1%, or the children of 1%, fall to under 80% or 50%? I honestly don't know, and this probably isn't the thread for it - but I'm definitely interested.
First off, thanks for the article, norm! Good read, and I still fucking love Mr. Eastwood.

RW, I don't have stats, and no disrespect to you, but I really don't care about them. I'm sure my own world/life is but a small example, but I've seen many in my family go from coming here or growing up here with close to nothing and making very successful lives for themselves, along with others - some very close to me - who were working hard, living quite well, and then got fucked by these times.

My point was that neither should be villified.
i agree with you on the idea that neither should be villified at the outset, but you made the claim that many with wealth work hard to get there. i just wonder how true that is...as i said it's more just out of curiousity than anything.

    The guy is an actor/entertainer/artist.

I thought it was funny, cool, and most importantly true.

He recently said "Obama is the biggest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people"

Obama is a joke. Obama had one job in his life (BaskinRobins) AND HE STOLED from the company.

He was a student, then teacher, then politician. That is it. He wrote 2 books...both about HIMSELF.

A vote for obama is a vote for fantasy. WAKE UP!

Remember Living Color? Cult of Personality? That is Obama.
    I found my place......and it's alright
  • I think it's very telling that one of his three main points he originally wanted to make was that "not everyone in hollywood is on the left". that just goes to show that even he knows that americans will vote with their obsession with the rich and famous. what a joke.

and he's not senile, or crazy, or anything else. He's a very intelligent man.

And I'm, as Clint said, "on the left".

so what? kids make mistakes, and he doesn't run from them. he admits to doing drugs too, and he still got elected. I'd say that's pretty telling.

Most people who write books, write about themselves.

I'd say being the president is a job, and a pretty big one at that.

I think Clint managed to fill out all of his contributions to the qualities stated in that great Movie title, "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly."

Hey- don't worry- I still have all the respect in the world for Mr. Eastwood as a film maker and actor- especially if he'd just stick with what he's good at.

I think I like him more as...a man...rather than his film side.

And I agree there was some bad (read: awkwardness, stumbling on words, etc.) in there, but ugly? Nuh-uh! At least, to me ;)

He admitted this type of forum isn't his thing; good on him for going for it, as his points did resonate with me.

Plus, as much as the smooth-talkers (I'm looking at all parties here) can put forth a charming, smooth-talking speech, I actually appreciate more the ones who do falter some, the ones who aren't so slick.

I do agree, Hedonist, that being real is better than being smooth-- any day. I guess what was ugly about it for me was that he was trying too much with the faltering humor and empty chair gimmick. I'd have much rather seen him just come out and snarl a little and grumble about what a pencil neck he thinks Obama is. (I know- somebody is going to ask, "So you think humor is ugly and snarling is beautiful?" and in Eastwood's case I would say, "Yes".) Maybe I wouldn't totally agree with him, but if he just acted more like his old self he would have come across better. Eastwood was a mediocre politician but a great film maker. I just don't see the need for him to try to be any else.

I believe his speech was impromptu and if your comment is coming from a disrespectful place
based on one's age that is messed up a bit. If its coming from a partisan place
don't know what to say about that.

it was coming from no place really i was just messing around. i was basically implying the impromptu speech was so horrible that perhaps he was high that's all. he may or may not take medication - i honestly don't know.

    hmmmm...
much of this seems harsh towards an old mans attempt at creative lightening.

And I thought the Democrats were supposed to be the easy, cool, accepting, generous
ones with a bit of a sense of humor...
guess we just can't generalize at all that way.

I'm all for creative lightening, but the substance of the speech (outside of the politicians are our employees) was wrought with right-wing talking points that have little basis in reality. this isn't to say that all conservative beliefs are not valid, useful, or devoid of reality just that what Eastwood put out there was useless. Was it funny? Yes, both as a train wreck and as a bunch of inside jokes that conservatives like to laugh at. Was it good/inspiring? No, and I don't get how people are actually arguing that it was so bad that it was good.

Generalize and flame away on the Democrats if you wish. I thought his speech only hearing it not viewing it was rather uneasy but funny. He did what a celebrity do show up and do what they do yak....Clint is STILL the man even if he has a Republican mind. This scene taken from one of his movies..Kelly's Heroes...

    Maybe He's a Republican

I will argue it was so different it was good.

It left me smiling and I just never knew Clint had that in him.
Inspiring in just that, most especially when speeches from both conventions
can get monotonous and repetitive. I fought sleep in both towards the end.

The creativity and irony was great for me because in some ways
I feel and I know others feel,
our President has been somewhat of an empty chair,
in that for us personally we are not better off than four years ago.
    We aren't alone.
The empty chair for me symbolized that, empty promises, empty change.

But by far it was that I also welcomed something different and unorthodox
    which always catches my interest.

Such an excellent piece of work, all around...not to mention that sweetass car.

If I make it to his age, I hope I have the balls and hardheadedfuckyouall state of mind that he does.

Too bad the prop got more attention than the intent.
