Truly mortifying and awkward for everyone involved, and even more sad.
Poor Clint certainly didn't make anyone's day.

    Fox news Headline:

Clint Eastwood stumping for Mitt Romney suggests shift in Hollywood's political paradigm, experts say

    article is equally as bad.

I wasn't in any way insinuating that he isn't still the man.
I just felt very embarrassed for him last night.

What should have been the pinnacle of the convention, sadly turned into one the most awkward, disjointed and cringe worthy speeches I have ever seen, a very odd choice for a keynote speaker.

I thought he was having a stroke at one point!

Romney must have been PISSED. Especially when Clint said to imaginary Obama, "I can't tell him(Romney)to do that to himself(go fuck himself)".

    What were they thinking!?

Do yourself a favor Clint and stay BEHIND the camera.

As a liberal and someone who reluctantly wants Obama to win this election, I thought Eastwood's speech was pretty entertaining. It was a nice change of the pace from the typical political garbage shoved down our throats. He did not make me think anymore of Romney, and I didn't need him to realize that Obama has not lived up to his promises, but at least the man did something different.

He was asking questions to the chair, and I thought they would have some spliced up, hack job Obama quote (You didn't build that, etc) waiting... but there was nothing.

I kind of agree. For an off teleprompter performance I kind of enjoyed it. It was certainly a little akward, and it really wasn't the content of the speech that I enjoyed, it was knowing while I was watching it that everyone on this website would be calling him crazy and say how awful it was...what was awful about this statement

We -- we own it. It is not you owning it, and not
politicians owning it. Politicians are employees of ours.
And -- so -- they are just going to come around and beg
for votes every few years. It is the same old deal. But I just
think it is important that you realize , that you're the best in
the world. Whether you are a Democrat or Republican or whether
you're libertarian or whatever, you are the best. And we should
not ever forget that. And when somebody does not do the job, we
    got to let them go
    .

The only criticism I can see is not liking the idea of American exceptionalism, but I didn't take it as he was putting down the rest of the world, just telling the American people to remember that we can be great and do great things.

And the newhart style bit was a stretch for him...he should have come out as Walt...that would have gotten a shitload of people talking

The empty-chair thing was apparently off the cuff, so I'm cutting him slack for the stumbles.

Yes, some awkward moments in there but so what? As SVRD said, a nice change-up, plus good points made.

While in my teens, I had the pleasure of having coffee with Mr. Eastwood and a few others at a local tennis club/driving range that we used to frequent. Thought he was a class-act then (and a self-made one, at that!), and now.

Is the RNC still saying that the chair bit was off the cuff? My only question to that is who brought the chair out? It had to be somewhat planned.

I don't know, heard the unscripted thing on the news this morning. Again, so what? Maybe he asked someone at the last minute. Maybe he said he wanted it for himself - he's an old man, after all.

Yeah I don't think it was as bad as some people are making it out to be. Just kind of awkward is all.

Will Munny: Who's the fellow owns this shithole?
    [pause]
Will Munny: You, fat man. Speak up.
Skinny Dubois: Uh, I... I own this establishment. I bought the place from Greeley for a thousand dollars.
[Will levels the shotgun, and speaks to someone standing behind Skinny]
Will Munny: You better clear outta there.
    Man: Yes, sir.
    [scampers out of the way]
Little Bill Daggett: Just hold it right there. Hold it...!
[Will shoots Skinny. Screaming, the women scatter upstairs]
Little Bill Daggett: Well, sir, you are a cowardly son of a bitch! You just shot an unarmed man!
Will Munny: Well, he should have armed himself if he's going to decorate his saloon with my friend.

His speech and the reaction to it have made me uncomfortable... I don't like seeing Clint Eastwood making a fool out of himself at all! I love him! Like, love love him, even though he's 300 years old. But wtf was he thinking??? He wasn't even being witty or anything. It was just weird and embarrassing. Made him look a little bit senile, which I'm pretty sure he's not. Too bad, Clint. :(

As a big fan of his, I think it worked to deprive him of some dignity and respectability ... and I don't handle watching old men deprive themselves of dignity at all. It makes me feel guilty because I feel sorry them for some reason. I think that's a flaw on my part, but I can't help it. I guess I'm making a deal of it because I REALLY love Clint Eastwood. Oh well. He should go back to making movies and leave the politics to others.
