This man he has a strict platform against abortion.

He has apologized for his comments, not wanting to offend victims
and has clarified he defines rape pertaining to the shut down effect,
    as being violent assault.
I think what lies at the heart of his words is that life should be protected
in the case of rape. An extremist view like this has little hope for future change,
but he still speaks and works toward protecting the real victims of abortion...
    human life.

I couldn't find anything during a google search relating to the shut down effect. what does that mean?

Oh yes you have mentioned this before.

As I said before to not try to understand is to be uninformed, this both in politics
    and in general life situations.

Its important to look past words, to research a person,
think what point was truly being made, for me at least.
And as an independent most importantly to not prejudge along party lines.

I don't see conservatives as a threat anymore than liberals.
The common sense of the middle will work to keep
    personal freedoms and rights hopefully.
The right to bear arms, a woman's right of choice. Now some would like to remove
portions of those rights by gun bans/restrictions and looks like rape related abortion
    could be on an agenda.
I don't think either will take place, hopefully.

so what do you think is the point he was truly trying to make here?

I think that was more his term but I did post a link describing the belief.
The funny post from that onion link someone posted, one of the posters on that link
remembered a term, so she knew about it,
I don't though, I have never heard of it before this man.

When I first heard the news story while having coffee in the early am yesterday
I too wondered what he meant about it all and what he meant by legitimate rape...
I was thinking what the heck is this? I researched and provided some better understanding,
    at least for myself.

He doesn't give a damn if he offends victims. The only reason he apologized is because he wants to win an election.
    The guy's an asshole.

I can get past the legitimate rape thing, he obviously just misspoke when talking about the differences in legal definitions between statutory and assault, which you mentioned in your post. pretty terrible political gaffe, no matter what his point was.

found your links and read them. this is all good news for his opposition. she must feel like she just won the lottery.

    just to play devil's advocate.....

the republican party is made up of a majority of christians. christians are supposed to be forgiving and accepting. so why are the gop party leaders not forgiving him? isn't forgiving him what jesus would say to do?

    The guy's an asshole.
I disagree he understands, he has daughters, he has a a hard stance on predators
but he would also guide his daughters to not abort I am assuming.
His belief is to protect the unborn child, he is an extremist, so this includes rape.
That does not make him an asshole in my eyes.

After loving a product of rape, in my lifetime and seeing a her lifetime lived
    because she was not aborted,
seeing her four lovely children, and her mother's happiness and pride
    before she left this world,
I understand his need to focus on a life that has no rights, the unborn child.

I support choice even if I think it can be the wrong one but even in the case of rape
would hope the decision would be weighed heavily. A pill removes the love and joy
many can know, a light from a very dark place, and it can be taken in a moment of trauma
without consideration for mother or child.

Choices make or break our lives, it's all up to us.
