Gailee to be exact. Narragansett has Narragansett Town Beach, Scarborough State Beach heading south down 1A and just past Scarborough is Gailee, with Salty Brine State Beach, formerly known as Sand Hill Cove and another smaller state beach at the jetty/breakwall where George's of Gailee is located. However, Charlestown Town Beach, my personal favorite, is off of Route 1 South before Misquamicut/Westerly. Heading South on Route 1 from where 108 and 1 intersect., there is East Matunuck State Beach, then Carpenters and the Ocean Mist (Ocean Mist is a great waterfront, local bar) in Matunuck, Greenhill beach and then Charlestown Town Beach. If you're really adventurous, head over to the Block, Block Island, for the day. Take bikes, your car, or not, get a cab from the ferry landing and take it to any number of beaches on the island. Absolutely beautiful and awesome.
Charlestown Town Beach looks out at Block Island and if you walk past the town beach proper, you can drink beers as long as your discreet about it. You're not supposed to but if you're cool, you can sip away all day. Nothing better than a cold beer on a hot day at the beach with a view of Block Island and nice Block Island Sound water to swim in. Might even have a seal pop up next to you and its an excellent surf casting beach when the blues are running if that's your thing.
Peace.
Great suggestions. My wife and I are kid free this weekend and heading down that way again. I'll have to consider one of the ones you mentioned above
If its beach you want to sit on and wiggle your toes in the sand, I suggest Charlestown. But its $20 to park on the weekend, $15 weekdays and the lot fills up fairly quickly on the weekends. If you go later in the day, you should be all set. East Matunuck beaches on down to Charlestown have erosion issues so I'm not sure how they'll be. They could be very rocky or fine. The Ocean Mist bar is about to fall into the ocean so I know they're having erosion issues and the state just authroized a retaining wall. But go for a drink late in the afternoon 'cuz "its just a beach bar." Also, hit the Matunuck Oyster House, right on the water on the road to the Ocean Mist, Matunuck Beach Road. They shuck oysters to order and they grow them about 60 feet from the restuarant. Place gets crazy busy and inside its loud but its excellent food and drinks on an idelyc location (they also have outdoor seating). If you're looking for night time fun, check out the Coast Guard House in Narragansett or the Bon Vue down the "point" or the aforementioned Ocean Mist. Google is a wonderful thing for more info and directions. Enjoy!
